Ok.  Well here I go again posting a project announcement thread.  This time it will actually go somewhere.  (I made this one basically because I went in a completly different direction.  Hope that's OK.  Please delete the other if you want).

But after many, many months of thinking about I am finally about to get off the ground with my cab.  I have 4 days off this week (mon-thur) so I plan on spending as much time as I can on it.  Tommorrow my plans are to go to Lowes (cheaper then the Home Depot by me) and get a router, 3 sheets of 3/4" MDF, and some 2x2 for framing.  As well as stock up on some things I'm low on like wood screws and blades for the circular and jig saw.  Then come home set everything up and get the sides cut out at a minimum.  Basically I'm wanting to possibly get a cab that can stand on it's own at least in the next four days.  We shall see as I don't want to rush things.

And as far as the name, Fun Evil Jester.  That's an anagram of my first and last name.  Thought it would be kinda cool for an arcade name.  I was thinking Fun Arcade could be kinda like the brand name and Evil Jester could be kinda like the model.  Does that make sense.  Either way when it comes that time I'm going to have to enlist someone's help on here for the graphics design.

Here's a sketchup model of the cab.  It's designed after the Konami TMNT, Simpsons, Bucky O'Hare cabs.  The marquee in this model is just an idea for now and the side art is almost what I want but just needs moved around some.  Planning on 2 switchable 8 way joysticks, 7 buttons per player.  The basic 6 layout with a 7th button for the occasional 4 button game.  A trackball and possibly a spinner.  Will post more tommorrow with my progress.

Also does anyone have a good suggestion for an 8 way switchable (preferably from the top) joystick that has or can be fitted with the option to be lit with an RGB balltop.  I've sent RandyT a PM asking for suggestions as most of my controls will come from GGG but haven't heard back yet.

I hate Shaco! That clown jumps outta the bushes, scares me to the point of running around in circles with just a jack in the box, then proceeds to kill me and dance on my corpse before i can even flash away! (exaggeration, but i sill hate him).

Good luck with your build!

For 4-way 8-way switching from the top, you'd either have to go with the Magstick Plus from Ultimarc
http://www.ultimarc.com/controls.html

or the Omni-Stik from Groovy Game gear
http://groovygamegear.com/webstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=65&products_id=195

Or if you don't mind opening the control panel for switching, you can go with Sanwa JLWs (great sticks)
http://www.lizardlick.com/Sanwa-JLW-TM-8-Joystick_p_271.html

Or you can go with the Ultrastik 360 and have the best of both worlds and use mapping to achieve 4 or 8 way (and maybe an octagon restrictor, for feel)
http://www.ultimarc.com/ultrastik_info.html

Good luck with your build.

My pictures were too large so I get to type this again.   :banghead:  O-well.

Since I don't feel like typing everything again.  I took the wife to Lowes around 2PM.  Picked up a bunch of stuff. (Wood, tools, etc).  Started work on the cab about 4PM.  Took me until 5:30PM to finish drawing out the 1st side.  Cut it out.  Sanded the edges straight, etc.  Used it as a pattern for the second side.  Made a small error in the top of the second side.  Not sure how but I put a small "dent" in it with the router.  I also made a quick and dirty mockup control panel box out of some left over 3/4" ply I had in the garage to use as a mockup for my controls and I can possibly use the top as a pattern.

On to the pics.

1st is the 1st side.
2nd is both sides together.
3rd is the "dent"
4th and 5th are the quick and dirty control panel.

I like how you put the notch into the side panels to rest the top of your control panel on. Kind of makes me wish I did that with my cab.

I can't really take credit for the notches to rest my control panel on.  I got my plans from http://www.jakobud.com.  All the Konami cabs he has plans for look like this with the exceptions being the 6 player X-men and the Track & Field cocktail.

The thing I like about it though is that I should be able to put my admin. buttons on the top of my control panel and not worry about them interfering with the controls.

Got some more work done today.  I fixed my small mistake on the one side with a little bondo and sanding.  Fixed it right up.  Got a base built.  Got the panel for the coon door area and top cut out.  Then drilled and countersunk the sides so I could install them on the base as well as install the coin door panel and top.  The top is just held on with a couple screws as I still need to do some sanding on it.  Pretty much all that's left looks wise (sans control panel of course) is the speaker panel and the door(s) for the rear.  Then it's all inside stuff.  Thinking about decasing my tv because of the angle it will have to sit at.  Really don't want to but can't figure out how to safely secure the tv inside the cab because of it.  Tommorrow will cut out the speaker panel and build a good control panel for it.  Then work on the tv issue.  Need to add a little bit of bracing inside but it's suprisingly sturdy at the moment.  Won't get much done after that until I can get a slot cutter.

Pics.

1 - how she looked before I got the top put on.
2 - The inside.  Bare but roomy.
3 - A small miscalculation when I made my base.  Gonna use some wood filler to fix the small gap.
4 - The quarter image my wife drew on the coin door panel for laughs.

As I haven't worked with MDF before this project.  My top piece got a small split in an edge when I screwed it into place.  Will this become a problem later on?  Should I replace the whole piece?  Or will it be OK.  It will be covered by the marquee retainer when completed.

a picture would help, but otherwise I'd say just sand and bodo it for a fix.

Like mgb said, hard to say without seeing the split.

However, moving forward, if you are screwing into the edge of MDF, pre-drill the holes if you can.  MDF doesn't behave like wood, and will split easily when screwing into edges.

It's basically a small hair line split.  About an inch and a quarter long.  I am predrilling my holes.  I think when I screwed it together the screw went in a little crooked.  That or I need to go up to the next size drill bit.  It's the only piece that's split on me so far though.

Will have a picture of the split up in a few hours when I get access to my other computer with the SD card reader on it.

If you glued that joint... then it should be fine.  If you didn't glue it... then it should probably still be fine once the rest of the cab is put together.  If you get a split every time you put a screw in, then that would be different.

It's only held on with 4 screws so far.  2 each side.  I needed to see how my measurements lined up and clamps didn't want to hold it.  I'll keep an eye on it though.  If it splits anymore I'll just replace it and use this cut for something else.

I also found out yesterday that I won a Coin Controls over/under coin door on Ebay.  Seller stated it came with the coin mechs and was in good condition.  If the pictures were of the same door all it looked like it needed was some work with a wire wheel, repaint, and locks.  I'll see when it gets here.

Also ended up getting a Mars GL5-R1 bill acceptor from the same seller.  Also supposedly works.  This was more of a "I want one to play with" buy as it's not going on my cab.

It's easy to make mistakes joining MDF to MDF like this.  Have you considered using actual wood battens to give your screws more bite?

If you're talking about adding blocks to the inside corners then yes I've thought about it.  If not then I have no clue what a wood batten is.

Hey there AlienInferno, this use to happen to me quite a bit.  I have since started to predrill holes a little smaller than the screws I am using and then use a counter sink bit before I finish screwing them in.

Hope this helps.

If thats the only crack, you're probably fine. but like Woodshopflunky said, it is best to use hardwood strips inside (Like how factory arcade machines are made).
you can put alittle wood glue in the crack to step it from spreading.

otherwise your marquee retainer will hide the crack

Can someone clarify this hardwood strips thing?  I've only seen the inside of an arcade machine once or twice and at that time I was more interested in playing the games.

Lengthy explanations, pictures.  I'm better with pictures.  Isn't everybody?   ;D

Yiup! I agree with what has been said already.
If that's the only crack then move on (no fix needed) MDF is so fibrous it will hold like that for yonks (the only reason it won't is if you put pressure on that join or you live in a humid place - moisture will expand that join if you don't seal it with paint)

You should always stay about 50mm away from an edge that way you don't compromise the soft center of the MDF board.
Anyway great work

Take a look at my project - I use MDF strips to screw into
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=112442.0
The best photo is the back view once together, see how i used 100mm pieces of off cuts to screw the center pieces into. Makes the join 10 times stronger. (most people use a thin pine piece of wood. But i had plenty of MDF so used that

Hey WoLLiEnZ,
Thanks for the link.  Nice cab by the way.

Thanks mgb for the pic.

I have some 2x2 laying around.  Maybe a little overkill in spots but it wouldn't hurt anything to go ahead and glue and screw them into the existing corners would it?  Figure it will give strength and all I'll have to do is fill in some extra screw holes.

Quick update

Coin door arrived today while adding some reinforcement pieces to the inside of my cab.  It's in really good shape.  The polished metal pieces on the door (around the rejects and coin return) are in great shape.  A small scratch in between the two rejects but it's not really noticable so not going to mess with that.  The only real work I'm going to have to do on this door is repaint it to black and add locks.

Not bad for $9.95.  S&H cost more then the coin door.

Also pictures is the bill acceptor which will not be going on the cab.

Now back to work.

I've been thinking about doing a new cab in the same style you're doing yours (Konami 4-Player cabs).  I like the way it's looking - I'll be keeping an eye on this one.

How wide did you make the cab, BTW?  What size/type of display are you using?

The cab itself is 28.5 inches.  Control panel lid is the widest point at 36.875 inches.  The display is going to be a 27 inch Sony CRT TV.  Should fit depth-wise I hope.  It will be a two player cab for spacing reasons but if I ever build another cab this one will become the dedicated 4 player Konami cab.

What would be the easiest way to get the original white coating off the coin door and down to bare metal?  If I remember right, from my various readings of the forum, just a drill with a wire wheel.  Correct?

Nevermind.  After weeding threw 8 million threads again I found my answer.  I was right.   8)

Got the coin door stripped earlier today.  Stayed up late priming it because I was having fun.  Need to get some sleep now but here is some pics of the stripped door.  Also got the hole cut for it and new locks.  Will paint it tommorrow and maybe get it put back together.

Looks good. Did you put anything on the door (paint stripper) before you used the wheel? I have a door I want to strip and was going to go the wire wheel route as well.

At first I just used the wheel.  It worked but had to keep the wheel in the same spot for awhile to get it down to metal.  I ended up using paint stripper in the end.  It took 99% of it off.  Then I hit it with the wheel again to get the other 1% and to clean it up a bit.  I would suggest just trying the wheel by itself because they both ended up taking roughly the same amount of time.  Also I have a thorough hatred for paint stripper now.

I just used a wheel on mine, and I didn't primer it, I used the rustoleum hammered black finish on it.  I love the old coin doors with the chrome on them...

Thanks. I'm going to go get the wheel in a few hours. Fortunately, it's a single door, not an over/under, so it shouldn't be as bad. I'm also going to hit it with the Rustoleum Hammered Black finish.

Got the coin door painted, reassembled, and installed.  I think it looks pretty good.

On the locks.  Does the locking bar on the back of the lock supposed to be up against the wood part of the cab or just against the door frame?

Your door looks really good.

As an aside, it took me two  hours to strip just the front side of the door. I got the 3" fine wire cup as shown in other threads. Should I have gotten the course one instead? Or does it just take that long?

There was an extra layer of paint, as someone had tried to repaint the door once, it would seem. I also sprayed it with some Goof-Off from time to time, but it didn't seem as easy as I anticipated. Oh well- yet another learning experience!

Small update.

Thinking about changing my theme.  I just can't seem to find any good images to use as a marquee or control panel art.  I'm a big anime fan so I've been playing with the idea of a Outlaw Star themed cab.  Could call it the Outlaw Starcade.   :D

AND I finally ordered a few parts/items over the last couple of days.  (used my debit card's rewards points cash back option to pay for them   ;D)

1st order:  100 each of the 2004, 2006, & 2007 tokens from Arcade Replay.  Thanks Santoro!  I figure 300 tokens should be enough to keep my cab operating.  Plus maybe I can rig up a token dispenser with that bill acceptor I have.

2nd order:  Ordered 17 Electric Ice 2 pushbuttons, one of their prefabbed RGB lighting system pcb thingies, 1 RGB LED with resistors, a player 1 start, a player 2 start, and an LEDwiz from GGG.  I think that's everything.

Still planning on getting the Electric Ice T trackball from GGG and a couple U360's and iPac2 from Ultimarc.

Long post for a small update!

----------------------------------

On a side note: I've allready thought of a few (semi arcarde related) ideas that the LEDwiz might be good for.  Might have to make up a mini version just to see.

Got my TV decased and installed in the cab today.  Haven't got it exactly bolted down where I want her.  She sits alittle low on the right side.  Other then that she's working good.  O-yeah.  It's plugged in through Svideo.

Also found an old pair of PC speakers that originally came with this computer.  Sony Vaio from way back in the day.  I lost the 12 volt wall wart though so going to see if I can't hardwire them to a spare connector on the power supply.

Wouldn't mind getting a sub for that little extra bass kick but IMO just playing the games it shouldn't matter too much.  I guess I'll see when I get them working.

On to pics.  Crappy pics.   :-[

After work today I got the monitor sat in it's final location, I got the computer bolted in it's place, and the smart surge protector zip tied down in it's spot.  Now all that's left is to buy a set of speakers, finish the speaker panel, put in the marquee holder and lights, order joysticks, ipac, paint, etc.  But hey it's looking more like a machine every day.

My wife was really impressed by how it looked when the monitor was finally put in it's spot.  She said she was glad to be married to a nerd.  I took it as a compliment.   ;D  She then suggested I build her a skeeball machine.

If you're still contemplating your original theme...when I read 'Fun Evil Jester' I immediately envisioned the jester from early Marillion albums.  The artist is Mark Wilkenson.  It's worth a look, I'd think. (Sorry, no photo evidence to supply at the moment as I'm on my phone)

Thanks for the tip.  I'll check it out at some point.  But honestly the theme is jumping all over the spot at this point.  Not even 100% sure I want to stick with the "Fun Evil Jester" part.

Another miniscule (read extra long) update:

Finally got the rest of my controls ordered a few days ago from GGG and Ultimarc.

From GGG:
1 x Electric Ice T Trackball
2 x Hand Candy Joystick Ball Tops in the Ruby Gemstone color
2 x SlipWire Swiveling Interconnect for Rotatable Controls
2 x White ButtonBlaster LED's
2 x Red ButtonBlaster LED's

From Ultimarc:
1 x I-PAC 2 Interface
2 x U360's w/ balltop
2 x Hard Springs for the U360
2 x Octogonal restrictor plates for the U360
2 x Button wiring harnesses

I allready have an LED-Wiz and the 17 Electric Ice 2 buttons here at the house.  My plans for the next few days (if I can bare the 100+ degree days we've been having) is to cut out the wood panel for the speakers (sans actual speaker holes), and build the box and top for the control panel in preperation of my controls arriving.  I will be using the U360 button inputs for the player/pinball buttons and the Ipac for the Start/Admin buttons.

Also did some work on a possible theme idea and made a marquee.  I used images from the Outlaw Star Manga.  What do ya'll think?

The first is the original image slightly stretched horizontally.
Second is after some coloring and logo adding (WIP).

I love where this artwork is heading!  :applaud:

The mix of black and white with a little color is really slick.  The title is a little hard to make out.  I wonder if making it a little less transparent might help it pop a little.

Looking good!

I'm not 100% sure on the logo.  I want the marquee to have the logo on it but I feel bad about covering up that artwork at the same time.  I'll work on it a bit and post an updated image in the next few days.

Checked my tracking number for my items from Ultimarc last night and it said they were still over in the UK.  Today DHL knocks on my door with those items.  They must have air dropped the DHL van right in my driveway.  Very fast shipping.  Expecially from the UK IMO.

Got the rest of the ships colored in.  Also changed up the logo a bit.  Made it a little less transparent.

I like the way it look snow but am wondering if:

I should leave it as is?
I should color in the flames (missile launcher/engines)?
I should color the stars?
I should color both flames and stars.

Thanks to those that have posted their ideas for my marquee artwork.  I really appreciate it.  But after looking at some things and trying a few ideas of my own I've came to the conclusion that I'm going to stick with the one I made.  I printed out a full size image (over 4 sheets of paper) and taped them together.  It came out quite nice.  Easy to see and the colors popped right out.  Again thanks and I will be asking again when it's time for the side art.

Not much of an update.  Had a lot of bad things happen these last few days.  My truck needs some work now.  Let's just leave it at that.  But I did get my test control panel put together.  Hinged the top, got a U360 mounted on Player 1 side, and have the Ipac mounted.  The wiring won't be pretty since it's just a test.  Hopefully will get the buttons mounted tommorrow once I get something to drill the holes the right size.

Planning on using the U360's for the player buttons as well as the pin buttons.  Will use the Ipac for the Start buttons and my admin. buttons.

Haven't worked much on the cab lately.  Set to break the record of consecutive 100+ degree days on Friday.  Maybe Saturday.  So I haven't been out of the air conditioning much.  I have done a little work on my "test bed" control panel.  Got the top of it hinged and latches put in place as well as installed the 2 U360's and the buttons wired into them.  I have the 6-player 1 buttons as well as the left flipper button attached to stick 1 and the 6-player 2 buttons, the right flipper button, and plunger button wired into stick 2.  Seems to work well so far.  I have the coin door and the player 1 & 2 start buttons wired to an Ipac 2.  Will also use the ipac for my admin buttons.  Top mounted one U360 and bottom mounted the other to see which I liked.  Plus I have some longer hollow shafts on the way which should help out with the short bottom mounted stick.

My trackball from GGG is on the way.  A couple small things are not ready to be shipped yet but I'm not in a hurry.  Plus I just made another small purchase from them (a couple balltops.)  So after I get everything I should have enough to finish my control panel and have a few things left over for a bartop build for my brother.

Also recieved an email saying my marquee has shipped from GameOnGrafix.  Can't wait to see it in person.  Will motivate me to finish my speaker panel and marquee mounts.

I had to go check my receipt but I made my Electric Ice button order on July 3, 2011.  I do remember when I made my order I took about half of what they had left in stock.  As far as feeling like Happs I really can't tell you.  These are the first arcade type buttons I've felt in 12 years or so, so if I have felt a Happs button before it's been awhile.

Cool thanks. I have been checking back almost daily to see if there is anything listed on the website but have missed the few times there were. I think being on the west coast might not help as the inventory might get listed when I'm a sleep. I know I was out of town on vacation on July 3... this is an adventure.

Cool. I just got my test IL translucent from PA. Those definitely feel like Happs too.

Worked on the cab for a few hours today.  Got the slots cut out for my speaker panel.  Need to get some sand paper and a dremel with a drum sander on it after them to smooth them out a little more but overall I'm happy with the way they turned out.  The slots are 3/8" slots spaced 3/8" apart filling a 6" circle.  9 slots total.

Also went to the local Lowes and got some plastic corner guards to use as my marquee retainer.  The bottom piece works great.  The top piece will work but needs some trimming.  It currently covers a bit too much of my marquee at the top.  Not sure if these guards are going to work or not.  Only time will really tell.  If they don't work I think I'm going to just make my own out of some clear plexi (black if it bends ok with heat) and bend it myself to the shape I'm looking for.

Anyway here are 3 pictures.  Took them to showcase the slots but the marquee is in them as well.  Nevermind the mess of pencil marks I made trying to figure out what size slots and circle I wanted the first time.

Hmm...  Now you have me thinking.  I like the slotted look for your speakers.  I was toying with doing drilled holes for mine, or use speaker cloth, or even a grilled look, but the slotted look does look pretty sweet.  Damn, man.  Good work there!

Thanks man.  I just did them for looks mainly.  The speakers I'm using are just some regular PC speakers.  Just going to cover the inside with some black cloth to deal with light seepage and keep people from seeing the puny speakers.  Now get back to the STTP!

Black cloth looks awesome - if you have a "Fabricland" nearby, you can actually get speaker cloth.  I did my fireplace/media centre in that, as it lets IR through, and I could hide my Media PC and the kids Wii in there.  (I say "the kids Wii", as I suck at consoles.)

And as for the STTP3, I'M ON IT! (Even updated the blog...)

I got some speaker cloth off ebay, turns out the person selling it was in my home town, it was dirt cheap.

Finally got off my big fat bottom earlier today and cut out the panels for the permanent control panel box.  Was getting slightly flustered and made a couple bad cuts but managed to finish and clean up for the day.  Wasn't planning on doing anymore work on it but since the Rangers aren't doing to hot I went ahead and screwed it together.  The 45* angle cuts in the front lined up well but the back one's were all kinds of off.  Tommorrow all I'm planning on doing is adding some bracing for the corners on the inside as well as some sanding of the top edges to line them up better and add some bondo to fill/straighten out the gaps.

Been working on my cab the last couple of days while it was still warm.  Nothing really picture worthy.  Got some bondo work done on the control panel box.  Still have some left to do before it's ready for paint but gonna have to wait until we have another warm/dry day.  Hopefully will be able to finish it in the next week or so.

Also did some work on the back panels.  Broke it down into three sections.  A top panel to access the marquee/speaker area, the middle (main) panel for the tv/pc section, and the bottom section will be permanent with a vga out port and a IEC power jack.  The two removable panels will be held on with four 3/8" bolts each with the heads flush mounted into the panel.

Not yet.  I do all my work outside.  The temps haven't been too bad upper 70's for a high most of the time but I find that a bit cold for bondo work.  Plus it's been rainy the last two days.  I did do some a few days ago but the bondo has a slight sticky feeling to it still.  My guess is since it's colder (upper 70's or below is my idea of cold) it's taking a L-O-N-G time to dry.

I need to find a way to trim an eighth of an inch or so off my base in the back to get the lowest panel to fit.  I might be able to use the router but need to pick up some things including bits.  Also decided to add a couple cooling fans into the top of my cab.

Besides figuring out how I'm going to attach the plexi it's all basically small things before I can paint.

Upper 70s is definitely not too cold for bondo work. You can put bondo on in some pretty cold wheather. As a matter of fact, it generates its own heat during the chemical reaction between the bondo and hardner.

OK.  Well maybe not too cold for bondo work but sometimes too cold for me.  LOL.  Still trying to figure out why my last bondo work stayed feeling sticky for so long.  Just checked it and it's dry feeling now so unsure on that one.  Gotta do some work on my wife's car today so maybe tommorrow can work some more on it.

It hit 60 here today, I went outside and painted my house trim.
You bondo probably stayed sticky for a while because you didn't use enough hardner.
I prefer to err on the side of too much hardner, though that can give some air holes.

That's the thing though.  I used more hardner then I have been.  (ie the stuff that was sticky was a bright pinkish color as compared with the previous bondo work that is a light pink color.)  Not sure what I did but it's fine now.  Sanded it down lastnight.  Will try to work on it some tonight if I can get what needs done around the house done before dark.

OK.  So I actually did do some work on the control panel and CP box today.  Can you believe it?  I was out there in the dark, mid 50 degree weather, with a jacket and a homemade block sander knocking down bondo.  Actually I'm pretty much done with the CP and CP box.  Got it almost down to a paintable smoothness.  Have a few pinholes I can't seem to get rid of though.  Besides that all I need to do is shave 1/8 of an inch off the control panel top and it will be good.  Gonna work on it again tommorrow after work and will take some pictures at that time.

What works good for pin holes sometimes is a skim coat of bondo applied ove the pin holes with a razor blade.

Didn't get a chance to finish it off today after all.  Had to get the wife a new cell phone and that took forever.  Then spent about an hour with the customer service person because it wouldn't send text messages once I got home.  Pretty much made me want to smash the phone right there.  But I'll try the bondo / razor blade thing after work tommorrow.

Ok.  Don't hate me for bumping my thread.  I've let this project set on the back burner long enough and figured it will serve as a bit of motivation to get started on it again.  I did pull it out of the garage last week and did some repairs on a few pieces that were damaged.  Mainly it was just the corners on bottom that hit the ground a few times while moving it.  Got them all bondoed up and about halfway through sanding when the sander died.  Planning on buying another one tommorrow and finishing the sanding if it's not raining.

Anyway since I don't have any pics to post I'll just make a list of what I think I have left to do.  I set myself a deadline of July 4th to get it finished minus side art.

Things To Do
--------------------------------------------------------------
Cut the T-molding slot (I put this off long enough)
Install T-molding
Put in some mounts for the monitor plexi
Get some black plexi and bend some marquee retainers to the angle needed.
Make speaker mounts
Finish bottom back door (needs some wood removed so it will sit flush)
Install a VGA out, a power plug, and a usb plug in the bottom back door
Shave 1/8" off my control panel top
(option) - Cut a couple vents in the top of the cabinet

THINGS STILL NEEDED TO PURCHASE
--------------------------------------------------------------
Router Bits
Marquee Lights
Plexi for monitor cover
Plexi for marquee retainers
USB hub
USB extension
Wire and connectors

Excellent job. I am building out a MAME cab on an NFL Blitz cab that I got...same dimensions/style as yours.  Did you mount the trackball yet? I am going back and forth on my control panel layout, so pictures of a similar sized panel would be helpful.

Thanks.

I have not mounted the trackball yet.  If you look on page two you will see a mockup control panel with the joysticks and buttons installed.  I was originally going to put the trackball dead square in the center because I thought it looked better but after sitting in front of it and pretending to spin the trackball fast I kept hitting the monitor.  If I move the trackball as low as I can get it in the center position that will give me an extra couple of inches that should keep me from hitting the screen.

Main reason I haven't mounted it yet though is because I need to shave 1/8" off the top of the panel to allow for the thickness of the plexi I will be using on top.  As soon as that's done the panel will be assembled and complete.

Finally had an off day where it wasn't trying to rain so I got some work done.  Actually rain wouldn't have mattered as I forked out the cash and purchased 200 feet of extension cords today to run power from a small shed to my garage.  But here we go....

First thing I did today was slice my finger open on a brand new straight router bit.  That was great.  Then I proceeded to make a tool for my tool.  A router planer jig.  Got the idea from this webpage on WoodZone.com.  (I have more pics of this if anyone might need a how-to written up but I think the webpage I linked too does a pretty good job of explaining things)

Testing the jig by practicing shaving 1/8" off some scrap MDF.

After a couple tests I got it setup about right.

Then I proceeded to shave 1/8" off the bottom side of my control panel.  Made a couple mistakes as can be seen.  Just managed to dig the bit in a little too far somehow.

After some light sanding to get rid of some ridges I was pretty happy with how the rest of the panel turned out, bondo'd my mistakes, and sanded them down.

Here's a pic of me checking the measurements of the MDF.  And my taped up finger.  It didn't really bleed any but I wanted to keep MDF dust out of the cut.  The 3/4" MDF is now 5/8" MDF.

Also cut the T-molding slot for the control panel top.  It left a perfect 1/8" overhang.  Once I get the plexi for the top the T-molding should cover the entire side of the plexi and the mdf.

After all this I just worked on the main body of the cab.  Bondo'd up some pin holes I had in some previous bondo work and sanded everything.  I got all sides sanded except the back and the right side.  This upcoming weekend I will be busy so it might end up being 2 weeks before I can work on this again but all I have left before paint now is:

T-molding slots on main cab
Monitor plexi mounts
Bottom back door
Air vents (think I'm going to router some air vents in the top of the cab and the bottom back door as well)

Here's the rest of the pics.

Threw these in here just because I made a crap ton of MDF dust.  Even with a mask, and both of the big doors open, I still ended up with brown snot.

Allright so let's see what we have here.

Nothing much really.   :dunno  Thursday after work I got a little more work done on the cab.  Cut the t-molding slot in the main cab body and routered off a bit of a lip that was keeping me from getting the rear door #3 from sitting flush.  Still have to add in the VGA out, a RJ45 connector, a usb connector, and possibly a ps2 connector for a keyboard as well.  I figure it's easier doing updates with an external monitor as opposed to a TV that doesn't look that great when I'm actually using it as a PC.

Haven't really done much to the cab itself since then.  I've been busy all weekend at a club event.  Setting up a small fireworks show.

But during my off time and a little bit today I've been trying to figure out my button layout.  I've gotten my joystick locations, trackball location, and player buttons input into illustrator but for the life of me I can not figure out a layout for the two admin buttons (Exit and Pause).  I've tried putting them in the middle but that didn't look right so I'll move them around a bit and see what I can come up with.  I'll take input though.  Also going to try and finish all the cab except for paint this week but depends on when I get off work and how long it takes a few parts to get here.  So we'll see.

Here's the layout minus the two admin buttons.

Just to add I figured out something else I forgot to add to my CP.  A volume knob and headphone jack.  Yes you might hear the button smashing but I still want headphones.  So adding those two things might make it alittle more symetrical.

I had gotten some supplies in for my cabinet last week so spent the three full days of my weekend (well as close to full days as I could muster) working on my machine.  Got a lot done and at the same time made a lot of work for myself.  It's the old, "One step forward, Two steps back" deal.

Friday night after work I finalized the layout of my control panel and printed out a full size template to aid in marking my drill points.

Saturday I marked the locations for the buttons, joysticks, and trackball and proceeded to drill/cut/route out the locations for the buttons and the joysticks.  After this I used the router to trim the plexi flush with the control panel and route out the circles for the buttons, etc.  Here's where the "two steps back" comes into play.  I used a drill bit for the two joystick holes in the plexi.  The first one went like butter.  The second (and last hole), it hung and cracked the plexi.   :badmood:  It sucked but it happens.  Ordered another piece of plexi and called it a night.  NOTE: I have not done the trackball yet just because I decided (for ease of install) to use the trackball mounting plate sold by GGG.

Here's a shot of the plexi installed and you can see the crack in player 1's joystick location.

Closeup of crack.

Temporary Artwork installed (Super Mario Wii poster)

Here is that same artwork with one of the joysticks installed. The dustwasher covers most of the cracking so for now this will work.  A new piece will be cut using the cracked plexi as a template.

Sunday I proceeded to work on the rest of the plexiglass items for my cab.  Starting with the marquee retainer.

I made a quick line bender using a heating element strip I purchased from tapplastics.com using the element strip, a 2x4 with a 1/4" deep, 3/4" wide channel routed out down the middle, and a couple screws/nails, and some fiberglass tape.  I need to add some foil underneath the tape to help protect the wood underneath the element.

After this was made I cut the piece of 1/16" black plexi I had in half.  AND again to the "two steps back" thing.  It snapped in half about two inches two short while cutting.  Was a bit p/o'd at this one.   :banghead:      :censored:  Again I ordered another piece of plexi and proceeded to bend the broken pieces with my line bender.  Found out it works well for 1/16", 1/8", and 3/16" plexi.  Got the pieces bend and used them to hold the marquee in place.  Other then the cracked POS's I think it will look good with the final product on the machine.

Here's the line bender thingy I made.

AND the busted up marquee retainers.

Here's a view of the CP and the marquee.

And finally on Monday I worked on the monitor plexi.  It's 3/16" solar gray plexi from TapPlastics.  This time I had zero problems with the plexi.  Used a straight edge and a router to trim it to the correct size as well as shave a small lip into the bottom to fit into a groove I made in the back of the control panel.  It took several tries to line everything up and work like I wanted but finally everything fell into place and it works great.

After that I took apart my eensy-weensy computer speakers and mounted them over the GIGANTIC speaker slots I cut out.  It looks funny right now but will eventually be covered with either black speaker cloth or just plain black cloth.

Plexi with protective film still on.

A brace I put along the top to keep it from sagging in the center.

A view of the bracing/rails/whatever from the front.

Trying to show the slot in the back of the control panel as well as the lip I shaved in the plexi.

The speakers.  LOL.

And now to the current affairs.

I braved the heat and dripping sweat to pull the protective film of the monitor plexi, hook up my laptop to everything, run power, and see what it looked like.  I must admit I like it quite a lot.  I will need to paint the area around the monitor either flat black or the same color I'm painting the outside in (semi-gloss) to help hide the inside of the cab but overall with the lights low you really can't see anything unless you actually look for it.

Still need to fill in a few holes I made while installing the monitor plexi, install the volume control, and the back admin panel but should be able to move onto paint within the next two weeks.   :)

Here's a shot of the cab with it running Super Mario Kart from the SNES.

Thanks for the updates. I have a similar, if not identical cabinet, NFL Blitz 2000. I also cracked the plexi trying to use a regular drill bit. I switched to a small diameter hole saw and finished with a router trim bit and had much better results. Luckily for me the cracks were small enough to be eliminated by the router.

Keep the update coming.

Mike.

Had yet another small hiccup.  I didn't realize I ordered the wrong size plexi for my marquee retainers until after I was all geared up to get that part of the cab finished.   :banghead:  Now to make yet another order.

If I can make a suggestion, you can use the clear plastic edge guards from Lowes/HD from the walpaper section.  They're a buck and a half and you can paint them from the inside.  I'll have a movie about this tonight on my build thread:

Here they are...

I haven't checked your build yet but I had actually tried some of that early on. There may be a picture of it somewhere in a past post. Allthough it worked I couldn't get it to bend to the angles I needed without it showing tiny stress fractures around the bends and screw holes.  So I went this route because I can bend it to the shape I need.

So I got the trackball installed today.  I realized that I was off by about 1/8 of an inch so I had to move the trackball that distance towards the monitor but overall the install wasn't bad.  The trackball mounting plate made it super easy to install.  The hardest part I found was cutting the hole in the plexi.

But what I did was cut out a square big enough to slide the trackball through, drill the holes for the mounting plate, and install.  This is when I realized my measurement was off.  The bottom bolts on the plate hit the inside of the control panel.  I further drilled out the holes so that the bolts could fit but then soon realized that I wouldn't be able to get the nuts on.  So I grabbed the router and cut out a couple notches in the side of the contral panel.  This worked quite well and the hinge covers it nicely.  I might put alittle weather stripping in this location to block out light from the LED buttons and trackball but I'll have to wait and see what it looks like.  After I got this finished I removed the trackball.  Routed the control panel so the mounting plate would sit flush.  Clamped on a new piece of plexi and used a pattern bit to cut it to shape.  All the holes were routed out as well to keep from cracking the plexi again.  I barely had enough of a lip on the mounting plate to use it as a pattern but it worked.  Reinstalled the trackball, added my temporary art, and put the plexi on with some buttons holding it on.

All I have left to do to complete the CP is cut out the button holes for the pinball flippers and one in front for a plunger.

Hopefully tommorrow I can finsh the admin panel on the back and the volume control.  Shouldn't take long as all I have to do is cut out a square hole, cut some holes for the connectors, and glue them into place.

Trackball mounted with temp. artwork and plexi.

The mutiliation on the inside of the CP.  It's not real pretty but you won't be able to see it so I'm allright with that.

Today I finished the control panel.  All I had left to do was drill out the pinball flippers buttons and the plunger button.  That took a couple minutes but the control panel is now ready for paint.  All holes have been filled and sanded in the cab.  All I have left to do is install the volume control and glue the connectors to the bottom back panel.  I would have had it completly ready for paint today but it started to rain so it will have to wait until tommorrow.

After a couple days in the garage messing around in 100* + heat I dragged the arcade machine into the house and started painting. Got the first layer of prime on. Tommorrow I sand and throw another layer of prime on. But I will admit it looks good in white.

Got a few more coats of paint on over the past couple days.  Now I've only got one more layer of black to go.  Will get that finished later today and can start putting it together tommorrow.  It won't be 100% because I still haven't recieved my lights for the marquee from China.  LOL.  Just some cheap LED strips.  There is a few more other little things that need done but that's mainly for me.  Gonna be fun playing it with my family and a few friends come Friday.  I'm excited.

EDIT:  Forgot to add picture.   :-[  This was taken before I put on the second coat.

For some reason it just dawned on me that I forgot to drill the hole for the power button on the top.  FUUUUUUUUUU....................

Owell.  That shouldn't cause too much trouble.  Just some sawdust.

Allright so I had gotten all the coats of paint on.  Found out if I build another machine I should give myself just slightly bigger gaps on things that need to move (either the plexi or doors, etc) because the paint made some things a rather tight fit.  The plexi rubbed in a couple spots so I have to touch up a few things but overall my cab is pretty much done.  It's all control wiring, LED wiring, software related from here on out.  But I got the coin door in and wired up so the lights work and got my marquee lighting installed and wired.  I'm quite happy with the way it turned out so far.  My marquee looks great.

+1.  Marquee are is nice.  You should try a couple difference colors of light behind it.  4 in CCFLs are really cheap and use less power.  Plus, you can wire them at 12V.  I'm using blue in mine.  Big difference:

18" white florescent:

Blue CCFLs:

Right now my marquee lights are three 72cm white LED strips wired to the PC's 12 volt line.  It looks good to me.

Nothing really new.  Between bills, life, and other hobbies I haven't had much time to work on it.  Me and my stepson play it from time to time though.  On artwork in general allthough I really like the way the Outlaw Star marquee came out I am having a horendous (spelling?) time finding artwork that matches and has decent enough quality to work.  I've seriously been considering picking a couple of my favorite games and getting someone to custom draw me some artwork.  But that's still aways away.  Probably going to rewire the machine with beefier wire, the stuff I used breaks too easily, and add a spare PSU as a dedicated power source for the LED's.

Welp.  I've been away from the scene for a while and am starting to get into the mood to start another build. So what's a guy to do?  Finish the first one he started.  And what's the best way to do that?  By deciding to do a slight rebuild on the control panel, steal a page out of Nephasth's Two-Headed Beast build on how he did his wiring, and get some new artwork.  This is my third redesign on the artwork.   :dunno  I've decided for long term use/durability/lifespan of the machine I'm going with a       ?      theme.  Have several ideas running through my head.  The Outlaw Star marquee will be put into a lit box to mount on the wall.

I will start on the control panel sometime this weekend.

Small update.

The pc that was in this machine died. Well the motherboard did anyway.  So that gave me the opportunity to build a pc for it. There are a few games I wanted that the current setup couldn't handle.  I'm thinking something along the lines of a Intel I3 and at least 4 gigs of ram with a video card that supports S-video out. (As that will allow me to remove the pc-to-tv converter box) I'll have to look into this a bit more before I pull the trigger.

Because of this I've also decided to keep the pinball buttons on the panel. For now anyway.  I've decided on a theme and have commissioned a fellow BYOAC'er to create the artwork.  That should be getting started next week.  And I'll probably be changing up my controls a bit. I think I'll be removing the Electric Ice 2 buttons and replacing them with buttons from Paradise Arcade.  Also might be changing out the U360's for sticks from them as well.  I'll decide that after I see the final artwork.

Next update will be after the artwork is finished so stay tuned.

MY WIFE IS AWESOME!!!!

She went to visit one of her friends and somehow found out her neighbor was in need of cash and willing to sell there PC for $60.  She called me, explained everything, and then I told her to pick it up.

It's one of the thinner desktop types from HP/Dell.  Windows 7.  3.0Ghz processor with 2GB of RAM.  Came with keyboard, mouse, and a widescreen monitor.  Not bad IMO for $60.  The onboard graphics are OK for MAME but a couple of the games I want to run, run pretty crappy with it so I decided to upgrade a few things.  I ordered a 1GB video card which should help with the graphic situation and I also decided to upgrade the RAM to 4GB.  Motherboard can handle up to 16 but figure that's way overkill for anything I'm going to do with it.  Also ordered a USB to IDE thing-ama-jig so that I can get a few things off of the old hard drive.

Now I'm just working on downloading, copying, changing files, etc.  This is the fun but boring part.

Didn't even have a chance to touch it.  Didn't get to start on it when I wanted and then the old pc died.  After I get this new video card I'm gonna see how good this new table runs VP tables. If it does OK I'll keep the panel the way it is until I start on a virtual pinball.

BTW I'll be visiting your build thread a lot over the next couple months. Probably going to switch out my buttons with something like you did once my artwork gets here. Probably copy the wiring of everything as well. Well as far as using molex connectors anyway.

No problem man. Just make sure you have a big enough work area. It's easy to forget about where the arms are and just walk one of them off the table

So it has been a long time since my last post in this thread.  It has jumped everywhere to say the least in terms of a theme.  It started with the evil clown theme, then went to the Outlaw Star theme.  I must admit that the marquee I made turned out very good.  I might eventually return to that theme for something like a bartop build but for now i unveil the final (and I do mean FINAL) theme change.

I hereby unveil Battletoads!

Thanks to one of our local artists for hire, opt2not and his partner BitterP, I now have brand new artwork themed around the Battletoads.  I must say that it turned out far better then I could have imagined.  I am quite happy with it and while I wait for funds to build so I can send it to the printer, I am going to be rethinking my buttons and trackball.  I still want to have RGB buttons but I am probably going to go with something similiar to Nephasth's buttons.  The clear ring with the black plunger.  I also might go with a green plunger and a simple LED lit green trackball but all that will hinge on what I think after I buy a few buttons to see what they look like in person.

Now onto the pictures.

BOOYA!  :w00t

Glad you like the art, we put a bunch of love into it!  8)
BitterP did most of the heavy-lifting on this one, I directed the art, layout design and managed the quality output. So I can't take full credit. But it's great to have 2 sets of eyes on the artwork creation, especially since we work really well with each other and have so for years.
This project was definitely a lot of fun to work on, and it gave us both an excuse to play through Battletoads again! We took art inspiration from the arcade version, and the SNES versions for this one. The arcade game is incredible looking, but I got to admit, I like playing the NES version the best. Maybe part nostalgia, but probably because I just got my NES RGB modded, so I'm a bit hooked on it right now. :lol

Thanks for the kind words gentlemen!  :notworthy: And thanks to AlienInferno for coming to us with a great theme! Sure is a nice break from working on a cornucopia of mixed characters (which most people go for) where we have to figure out how to make them all work in a similar style!

As for AlienInferno's cab, I for one can't wait to see the finished product. Good luck bro, I'll be watching your progress!

Very nice work indeed! The one thing I would have changed is the marquee: I would have curved it a bit less and spread it over the full width (or maybe add some characters to the left and right).

I liked it too.  It's something I want to return to for a different build but for this one I always envisioned having full side art and all the art built around a specific theme.  The problem was I could not find any high quality images that would work for the sideart without being pixelated when resized.  I plan on taking some of the lower quality images and reworking them as vector art so they can be resized any which way without a loss of quality.  But my skills at that right now are terrible.  Once I get this project completed as well as a few others completed I will return to it.  In the meantime I will practice with Illustrator so I can get the artwork up to my standards when the time comes.

Very nice work indeed! The one thing I would have changed is the marquee: I would have curved it a bit less and spread it over the full width (or maybe add some characters to the left and right).

The original marquee does have characters on the left and right sides but IMO it looked to busy.  I find this version to be much more elegant so to speak.  I just like simpler looking marquees better.

I grew up playing the NES version.  My local arcade, at the time, didn't have it.  They did have TMNT and The Simpsons though which is why I styled my cab after them.  Glad I was able to give ya'll a little bit of respite from what is now the norm.  Glad to have you watching.  Hope I can make your artwork proud.    ;D

First of all, LOVE the artwork.  It looks great and opt2not and bitterp really outdid themselves here.

One thing I noticed is that the logo on the marquee appears a bit off-center to the left... Not sure if it is intentional or not, but if you haven't gone to production yet I figured I would point it out.  Regardless, excellent artwork and can't wait to see it on the cab!

So once again, we find that evil of the past seeps into the present like salad dressing through cheap wax paper, mixing memory and desire.

Son-of-a... I don't know how the heck this got passed us. I just checked the original files and you're right.  Thanks thatpurplestuff, good eye.  I'm guessing since we're multitasking several commissions at the moment, this somehow slipped by.  :'(

AlienInferno, I just sent you an email with the updated version, properly centered.  My sincerest apologies for this.  :dizzy:
I hope this didn't screw you in any way.

In this case I completely agree.  Sometimes less is more.

When creating a full cabinet of artwork, you have to balance the amount of detail when looking at it as a whole.  This goes for any project that requires multiple components of high-level detailed art to work together.  Most inexperienced folks treat each individual piece of art as it's own self-contained image, not taking into account the entire project's aesthetic and how it balances out.  For arcade art, the key is to take a step back and analyse the cabinet altogether, how each part works with each other. This is one of the reasons I tend to "mock up" the cabinet by photoshopping these images onto a photograph of the cab, to see how it all fits together.
Also, using the old painter's "Squint" technique is incredibly useful. By squinting your eyes when looking at the art, you can get a sense of where the details should be amped-up, or taken away. This is incredibly useful for clarity of the image, and balancing contrast. Because when looking through squinted eyes, you get the core essence of the image. Similar to sketching, where you breakdown the elements into primitive shapes to figure out proportions.

Another component when deciding a vision for your artwork is taking into account how arcade games were handled in the hay-days. They were meant to sell.
Side art was primarily the most "flashiest", while Control Panels and Marquees were the most informative.  When creating a marquee, artists had to make sure the title was clear and concise, without clutter so that the audience could easily read and recognize what game it was among all the other cabinets around it.  This is why you see a lot of classic marquees have much simplified graphics than side and control panel art.

Hey guys,

I've been thinking about what color/style of buttons/tops/etc I want for this theme.  I already have Electric Ice everything (Trackball, buttons, matching ball tops) for RGB lighting.  They do work well but I was a bit unsure of if that off-white color would look OK with the greens and yellows of the artwork so I made a mockup in Sketchup.  I think it should look ok with the white/white-ish controls.

What do ya'll think?

I didn't mock these up because getting the controls angles was a pain but my other option I was thinking was going with Smoke bubble-tops, Nepthring knock-offs, the Paradise Arcade clear/black button combo (for lighting the rings of the buttons with RGB (or just green), and a green translucent trackball.  Allthough I'm thinking it would be nice to have at least the trackball and balltops match so I might go with a green bubbletop.

But would that be too much green?

Hmmmm................

The white looks great. Any more green, and I think you'd get tired of the color.

agreed. White tmolding would help tie it in together.

Not sure on white t-molding. I'll mock it up and post it later when I get back home.  I was just going to use black.

For the t-molding, I suggest using Black.

As for the controls, yellow!
There is some yellow in the artwork, mostly in the gradients, and it goes along with the greens well. It's not as stark-bright as the white, but it'd be bright enough to stand out.

Tried Opt's suggestion of yellow.  Attached are varying degrees of yellowness.  Not bad really.  Kind of like it.

Yeah, it just seems to flow better and visually separates the control panel into two player spots.

Thanks for the replies guys.  I never would have thought to use yellow and it does work well with the artwork.

I think what I am going to do is remove all the RGB items from this machine.  I have plenty more empty cabs waiting so no problem there.  Plus it will make wiring easier.  I would need to purchase yellow buttons, yellow ball tops, a solid white trackball, and a couple white buttons for the admins.  If I can find them I already have player start buttons and should still have some vinyl admin labels as well.

Yellow buttons are a go.  Take apart the player buttons and use yellow surround with white centers.  Go with the white trackball.  Spend a little extra money and have custom dust washer produced that are the circular BT logo with the three spikes coming off.  That would be badass.

I've checked out one of the makers of custom dust washers a few months back.  This would be a good opportunity.  I'd have to do it without the toad face in the center as that would just be drilled out for the stick anyway.  As for your design suggestion the attachment look like what you thought?

Also I was searching Paradise Arcade and came across these two balltops.  I like the first one the best but thinking more along the lines of a solid ball for this build.  That's why the I linked the second.

Re: Battletoads - Waiting on final parts
« Reply #151 on: August 11, 2014, 04:47:10 pm »
So It's been awhile but I finally got around to ordering all the parts I need to finish this cab.  Well I say all the parts but I still need some wire but that's easy enough to source locally.

I have yellow buttons, yellow balltops, and a white trackball from GGG sitting on the shelf waiting to be installed, black t-molding and the material I'm making the marquee mount out of arriving within the next couple of days, and my artwork was shipped out today from GOG.  Can't wait for it to get here.

While I'm waiting for those parts to come in I'm going to be doing a little work on the cab.  Mainly removing the holes where I was going to have the volume control and the earphone plug.  I liked the idea of having the earphones but overall I don't think it's needed and I'm going to relocate the volume control to a more traditional spot inside the coin door.

I got these in the mail yesterday.  Now I have all the parts needed to get this completed.  Keep an eye out folks because this is going to look amazing.  Artwork looks great printed out.  Pictures do not do it justice since I had to shrink them a bit to be within the size limitations.

So I had this big long post done up and there was an error!  Now I get to retype it.

Thanks to those that have been following this and waiting patiently for the artwork to be applied to the cabinet.  I apologize that it has taken so long and that this hasn't been a very good thread as far as documenting the build for this.  I still need to do a bit of paint touch up on a few of the corners where the white primer is now showing through and I'm still waiting on a proper marquee retainer but without further ado...
