What game am I?
« on: May 09, 2011, 10:56:50 am »
My turn!

The main character is a man (I think) that runs around on a rectangular ice field.  He can jump through squares to "clear" them.  When he jumps through it, he ends up under the ice and can move around until he moves to an "open" patch where he moves back to the top.  There are icons available to clear a row vertically/horizontally that show up periodically.  He can get power ups like flippers and air tanks (I think).  There are bad guys like penguins (I think) that are killed when they stand on ice when it's being flipped.  This game is definitely color and I think it's horizontal, but I may have played it with the bezel, so it could be vertical.

Does it reveal pictures of a girl when the ice platforms flip?

I don't think so.  As far as I recall, it was not a mature title.  Although, that sounds like an interesting twist that the Japanese probably did release.

There is a title that i just saw the other night in mame that sounds very much like what you are describing but it revealed a girl when the tiles were flipped over.

It was some japanese named title.

Naw, not Pengo.  That was the first one that popped up in my MAWS search the other day.  I went through a few advanced searches at MAWS but didn't see it.  I know I'm not imagining it, but I can't remember enough to formulate a usable search.   :dunno

That looks like the same concept, but I don't think those baddies are quite right.  You might be right that it was a mature title though.  Now that I think about it, I might have been playing it to get a reaction from my wife.  Maybe that's why it's sticking in my head as fun.  The disapproving hands-on-hips look is always fun.   :laugh2:

Party Time: Gonta the Diver II / Ganbare! Gonta!! 2 (World Release)
Lady Killer

Both look like probable candidates.  I can't believe I didn't remember it uncovering a picture.  The more I think about it, the more it becomes apparent that the reason I found this one was right after I added a dedicated "Mature" emulator for MAME to my cab (a list that was just Mature titles so they wouldn't be mixed in with the regular stuff...so I could turn it off when it shouldn't be on).  I have a way to see how many times games have been played on my system, so I'll check that out for verification.

Hi, can you give some directions on how to do this?  This is exactly what I need to do.  Or, if it's been covered before can you help point me in the right direction?

Thanks,
  TD

Set up a mature emulator?

I would figure that you could just create a new mame folder with the appropriate roms. Then, in your front end, add it as a second emulator.

Or, in your front end, create separate lists of roms, so you can switch between the regular & adult lists.

I suppose there are many other ways.

Yeah, I wasn't sure if he meant an emulator for mature games or finding out what games have been played and how many times.  The first is easy for most front ends.  The latter requires a front end that tracks those details and stores the data in a format you can access.  I use GameEx and it's stored in a .mdb file, so I'll just copy it over to my main system that has Access.

I was going to check last night, but my other projects got in the way.

Got it.  I guess I need to spend more time trying to configure MameUI rather than playing games...Currently I've moved the age appropriate games to the Favorites folder but it would be nice to have my son only be able to access certain games when he is playing.  Thanks.

I found yesterday when looking through the MAWS list on this search that some titles that are NOT marked as mature DEFINITELY ARE!  One in that search said "(Adult Version)" which leads me to believe whoever classified it, might have missed a check box. :o

Lady Killer is another one like that but has bonus stages. My fiance is addicted to it. First she used to play them and it was funny... now I catch her playing them in her spare time.

Although it's not exactly as I remember, I think Party Time is the best match.  The character looks right as do the power ups.  I really don't remember his one being a hidden picture game.  Also, I don't remember the enemies, so these ones are neither right or wrong.  Lady Killer is definitely not right.

Lady killer is the first one in the series - at least according to this website http://www.arcade-history.com/?n=party-time-gonta-the-diver-ii&page=detail&id=3523. I think I have played a "clean" version of it before though. It's lots of fun either way!
