Angry Birds for PC? Arcade worthy?
« on: April 03, 2011, 06:46:47 pm »
So I hear there is a PC version of the popular game "Angry Birds" popularized by iTunes' app.  Is this arcade friendly at all?  I'm guessing the trackball and mouse button can be used to play.

In order to buy it you need the Intel app software installed.  Anyone out there know if Angry Birds can be used as a standalone program once it's downloaded or does it work similarly to Steam's games, where the Intel app needs to launch first?

Thoughts?

I have no idea if it works, but if it does without internet authentication every time it loads it'd be a good game to have.

Yes, you can use it standalone. It hasn't tried to open intel appup yet for me, and I bought it about a month ago.

I use it on a tablet, so I am not sure how well it would play with a mouse or trackball.

I've added Angry Birds to my cabinet setup.  The game plays just fine with the trackball.

What FE are you using and how do you run it from the FE?

I'm running it from HyperSpin without any issues.  I just have it setup and on my PC Games wheel.

I just got the game and it runs fine in Maximus Arcade.  Although I'm sure I'll eventually be switching to Hyperspin.  :)

I just got Angry Birds working on my cab, what a blast! lol

Had to use some software that allows you to control the mouse with the keyboard but otherwise, works great with the trackball and arcade buttons!
BTW you need Itunes/quicktime for it to work on the PC which is LAME but it fixed my issues

I don't have iTunes or QuickTime on my arcade cab, but it still works fine.  Although the version I downloaded came with a missing DLL file that I just had to add to C:\Windows\Sytstem32 and then it worked just fine.

My version worked fine, (I already had iTunes installed though).  But I tried it on another PC without iTunes and it also worked fine.  So I doubt that it needs iTunes or Quicktime in order to work.

There's only one catch.... I'm running it at 800 x 600 and when the game starts it gives you a warning:  "Minimum 1027 x 600 resolution is needed for optimal gameplay experience."  It doesn't affect the game, but it always pops up when you first start the game and you have to click the check button to proceed.

I tried editing the config.lua file and changing the width and height to "800 x 600". (original contents of file shown below).  But it still shows up with the warning.

Code: [Select]
product = "Angry Birds"
publisher = "Rovio"
name = "Angry Birds"
width = 1024
height = 600
orientation = 0
datapath = "data"
imagePath = "images/pc_build"
fontPath = "fonts/pc_build"
audioPath = "audio"
localizationPath = "localization"
levelPath = "levels"
scriptPath = "scripts"
deviceModel = "windows"
fullscreen = true
showCursor = false

I don't have iTunes or QuickTime on my arcade cab, but it still works fine.

That's a relief. There'd be no reason to have either of those installed unless they used m4a's/aac's or whatever the apple audio files are called. In which case I still don't agree with it. On that same topic, I like ipods but don't like how you have to use the one or 2 audio formats when for a quarter the price a no name "mp3 player" will play wma, mp3, ogg etc etc.

Anyway, I have angry birds ready to transfer over to my arcade machine later today. I shall report!

You'll be happy to know that the background music is in mp3 format the the sfx are in wav format.  So it should work just fine.   ;D

 :applaud:  that was my first thought too when I saw them

ive seen two problems with the PC version, one is that missing .dll file, the other is an abscence of quicktime but at least theres a fix for both. The annoying part is having to run keyboard mouse control software which includes the middle scroll button (to zoom in and out) but I found a good free one

Sorry to thread-mine here, but somebody mentioned Angry Birds being run on a MAME cabinet in another thread and it sounded like it might be a cool addition to have, but I have some questions:

- what does it cost?

- can somebody clarify the "keyboard mouse control" thing?  I'm not sure I follow why that would be necessary if I have a trackball?  If I do need to run some background software, can it be set up to launch automatically from MaLa or do I need to go through a bunch of manual steps every time I want to play?

- how do you actually launch a bird?  I assume you just roll backwards to set power level, up and down to aim, then hit a button?

- is there any way of playing a competitive game with 2 or more players or is it 1 player only?

I should know the answer to the last question because I have this game on my iPod touch, which shows how much I play it.  Personally, I don't really care for this game, but if it can be played with more than one player it might make a good crowd pleaser when guests are over.  Plus, I think it'd be much cooler playing on a cabinet than a handheld device.

i think you could even run it from hyperspinmalamaximus:
