What other hobbies do you have...
« on: July 16, 2003, 02:52:08 pm »
This whole MAME/arcade game scene is my new favorite hobby, im sure this sounds sort of odd, but im looking for a hobby for my father, he's a recently retired 49 year old venture capitalist who worked 12+ hours a day 7 days a week for the last 30 years.   Sadly, he has no(literally 0) interests other then work.  What else do you guys do for fun.

Photography (trick photography, playing with light), motorcycle cruising, r/c planes, playing cards with friends, hanging out with friends at bars shooting pool and throwing darts, learning bass guitar, woodworking, leathercraft (which is a nice skill with motorcycle cruising), collecting wolf art, helping futz around with my roommates car, help a friend futz with his racecar.

What did he do after work?

Getting out is always good. I like camping/hiking. Just sounds like work to someone who's never tried, but it's alot of fun if you go to the right place with good scenery. In south Texas that usually means a 3 or 4 hours drive, but it's worth it.

My other hobby is movies. In the theater or at home, but I prefer the theater. I've been too broke lately to afford to go, but I usually see most everything showing (unless it's really THAT bad).

What is that geocachying? I still don't feel like the website makes much sense of it. Sounds like it might be fun with the GPS, but what exactly is it? People mark spots for other people to look up or what?

hmm, some good ideas here so far:)

after work, he kept working.  He worked with people in asia and europe and was always on the phone at night due to the time differences.  Before he got into the vc business, he was a biker, he collects antique harley's(he's got like 15 of them, including a sweet 61 pan/shovel with a factory sidecar), but he doesn't care for them anymore.

Rampy, if you've got a good idea, feel free to email me, i can be sure to pass it along.

I'm into HO scale slotcar racing and collecting. I also go treasure hunting on the Jersey shores with my $700.00 Garrett metal detector. Gotta go at night after the people leave because most people that wander around with metal detectors are usually elderly and I'm 34 so going at night keeps my embarrasment to a minimum :-[.  I'll be dead before I find enough treasure to pay for the damn detector. :P Oh well... its the thrill of the hunt. :D. Still waiting to dig up the mother load a bling-bling ! For $700.00 it BETTER find me some REAL GOOD $hit. I've only had it for a year and I've got two good sized jars full of all kinds of coins from all around North America. A couple rings and a bracelet. Nothing with diamonds on it yet.  :-\. I know I know its an old farts hobby but I figure by starting early I may just be around when I finally break even. :)

Me too, I think it is big in Texas... whenever I go out to Colorado everyone is from Texas... (of course Texas is huge, but still)

Wow what a coincidence Brax. I've been A) thinking of building a Cobra replicar and B) thinking of sucking my dad into the hobby to help pay for it. Go figure.

The idea actually started as I began laying plans to drop a V8 into an old MGB roadster.  http://www.mgcars.org.uk/v8_conversions/rogv8.html

Got so damn complex I decided I'd be better off going the Cobra route since it would've cost me like 30K anyways

How far along are you? Are you getting the rolling chassis kit or going completely from scratch? Do you know if collapsable steering columns are available? ???

At the risk of being disowned by my wife and family if this wind of this ever got out...here is another ubergeek hobby that held my interest for a while before taking a big fat back seat to my cabinet.  http://www.robotbuilders.net/r2/

My practical hobbies include:

Home improvement - I'm preparing to build a two story garage and studio.

Mountain biking - I'm training for this....   http://www.adventurerace.com/spirit.html  but won't make it till next year, (if EVER)

Why not combine the two hobbies? heh

I've ordered the Factory Five cobra kit. Its the most economical kit available to me in Canada and since I've seen a completed one at a local car show I have the bug bad. $19k CDN or $11k US. Seems like a great price to me for a full kit. I'll probably end up moving back the delivery date until next year though.

And here is the actual car that gave me the bug:

I paint (oils), sketch, read a lot, do the usual hang-out-with-friends things, and freelance design.   Also woodworking, general electronic stuff(id est,  useless circuits), keep my plants alive, and hang out at the zoo.  Nothing is cooler than the zoo - nothing  8) .  Lately I've been trying to get into assembly language programming for vectrex, but we'll see how that goes.
...I know I'm forgetting something...maybe I'll think of it later.

Spider Monkey and Aceldamor,

I also am into HO Slotcar racing.  TJets mostly.  I have a three hour TJet enduro this weekend.

Spider Monkey, I see you are in New Jersey. Aceldamor where are you at?. I'm near Chicago. I run a TJet series here. NITRO and I have my own track Maelstrom Motor Speedway

I am also into woodworking, resin casting slotcars, collecting toys from my childhood, and I am starting to get into electric RC planes.

Golf
HO slot cars (wild to see I'm not the only big kid that still likes these   :) )
Collect Hot Wheels and other sized die-cast cars from time to time, still have all the ones from when I was a kid as well, too bad they got played with
And....  just got a 66' Mustang Coupe, should be fun as well   ;D

Nothing is cooler than the zoo - nothing  8) .

Heh, how about actually being out in the real wilderness and running into a moose 5ft away from you as you're climbing a mountain trail. This actually happened to me two weeks ago during a canoe trip. Talk about exilerating, .......and frightening hehe. Sure, the zoo is great but try the real deal if you ever get the chance. It's breathtaking. :) Actually, I think I need to get out to the zoo again this summer. The Toronto zoo is amazing... Or the African Lion Safari, where it's the way it should be. The animals are free and the people are in cages!  ;)

Very cool hobbies and interests out there. It's need how many people have somewhat similar interests.

Nailz,

I believe there are quite a few Slot Heads out there in Washington and Oregon.

What do you run?

I forgot to mention the Halloween decorating I do each year.  Talking scarecrows, graveyard, animated ghosts, flying bats, etc.

I got nostalgic a couple years ago and bought a track set for my stepson who was turning 10 at the time.  I then went back and started re-collecting the old cars I used to run.

I run mostly the older magna-traction and g-plus cars, so I have an old RC #16 Porsche, a G-plus Lola #7 F1, a very old L&M (white w/ red and black stripes), a couple Richard Petty #43 cars, black Shadow Can-Am car, and the old 6 wheeled Elf (my personal fav).

Not a big collection or anything, just the cars I had growing up....  If you have links to local guys, that would be sweet to find out in the Seattle area.  It's amazing, I just sorta figured most people didn't do this anymore, my stepson lost interest after about 2 hours...   :)

heh right on.  Of course, it's experiences like those that make me choose the sedated zoo over near death-by-moose :)  But I like to camp out as much as the next guy, and vacations to the beach are nice! Is that hobby...?  ???

What is that geocachying? I still don't feel like the website makes much sense of it. Sounds like it might be fun with the GPS, but what exactly is it? People mark spots for other people to look up or what?

Yes, exactly that.  People put something somewhere, recorded the coordinates.  You go find it (or hide your own) and report back with what you found or traded.  Check out some sites near you and see what they say.

Sir Poonga,

I have two Road Runners!

I have a few Chargers, a few Challengers, a couple of Cudas, three Charger Daytonas, several Javelins, an AMX, four Camaros, and 5 Corvette Grand Sports.

Unfortunately they are less than two inches long!  ;D ;D ;D
Real Life.  Still a poor substitute for video games!
