... I've got MAME v.056 running very well... I'm compiling a suitable version from my 0.122 romset at the moment - but how high should I dare to go before it runs slowly and badly? I want a nice smoooooooooth operation here!

Thanks for the confirmation. I was thinking the very same thing but just wanted to hear it from someone a bit more clued up on this kind of thing! v.0.56 is pretty decent anyway in my books!

Thanks for your help. :cheers:

No harm in trying a new(er) version, though.

I heard that there was one version of MAME in particular where they made big changes - which one was that? It made MAME run slower, I believe?

I reckon if I was attempt that version or anything after, then I wouldn't have much success!

I think it was the version where they changed the sound emulation and the actual emulation of the games slowed... which version was that?

I was searching for releases best suited for older machines as well and compared releases from 0.93 through 0.106... Don't know if any of this will help or not.

* v0.93 had the audio rewrite.
* 0.107 is the first full release for the new video code - the actual rewrite appeared in 0.106u1
* hiscore.dat was removed (and replaced with save state) in v0.108
* CPS2 decryption was added in v0.112
* There was a big Donkey Kong update in v0.116
* CPS3 decryption added in v0.116u2

A list of ROM changes can be found in this thread

Thanks for that info - that's great. By the sounds of it, I shouldn't venture any higher than v0.92 then!

I've picked up a new machine today - its an old Windows 95 machine. All I know is that it has 64MB of RAM. Any ideas on what this is likely to handle?

Cheers for your help! :cheers:

Under a PIII, the standard seems to be mame.37 or .36 . What OS are you using on that 600mhz?

The 600MHZ is Windows XP... it handles 56 very nicely generally bar possibly a few exceptions (Mortal Kombat being one of them). Handles King Of Fighters 94-97 nicely and Street Fighter 2 very well.

The other machine is running Windows 95. Not sure on the processor speed, just know it's 64MB of RAM at the moment. It has 3gb of space and boots very, very quickly. I guess I'll give it ago with versions around the 36-37 mark and see how it handles. As I'm putting all my roms into version update folders it shouldn't be too difficult to create each version to sample how well it works. Once it starts to run sluggish I will stop.

I have a P3 733 MHZ with 512 MB of ram running XP.  It has run MAME 0.66 perfectly perfectly for years.
