Anyone using an all foam mattress?
« on: June 13, 2016, 01:57:49 pm »
I need to buy a full size mattress for the guest room.
I'm debating between the cheapest inner spring mattress or one of these newfangled foam mattresses.

The foam mattress would be partly for me to try out, as I don't like my current mattress.  (Serta iSeries Vantage Plush)
It's only a couple years old and was consumer digests top rated inner spring....but me and anyone else who sleeps on it hates it.
I should have shelled out the money for the sleep number.

So what you sleeping on?

I've got some all foam with a comfort top thing on it.  The foam's broken down so bad that you slide off the edge of the bed.  We finally flipped it and are sleeping on the "this side down" side.  :(

We bought a memory foam from Sam's Club maybe 8 years ago.  12" thick, queen size.  I think we paid $550?  Love it.

I suppose I should mention I am enormous and this is a California King sized mattress.  We paid similar from Overstock.com or the like.

I can't stand all-foam mattresses.  Way to soft for my taste.  I don't like the "sinking" feeling you get.  My ex-gf had one and I hated staying at her place because of that mattress.

Yeah that stuff wears me out.  If you are heavy you'll sink in and it's hot in the summer.  Long story short, if you are getting it because you think it'll hold up better than springs, think again.

I was worried more about the comfort of my guests (to a certain extent $) and maybe deterioration despite not being used.
It probably won't get slept in more than 20 nights a year.

You guys have pretty much steered me away from the foam ones.
Gonna look for the cheapest locally available inner spring that feels tolerable.  :)
Hopefully it will still be better for my guests than an air mattress on the floor.

I'd say get a ---smurfy--- inner spring mattress with a foam topper.  That combo works well for me.

I have been on memory foam for a little over 5 years now.  I am a bit overweight at 230lbs.

My first was a queen size, decent quality generic brand, and is still in the same shape as the day I bought it.. I slept on it for about 4 years and it had the adjustable electric base.  I gave it to my daughter.  It is only 2 kinds of foam (about 2 inches of lighter stuff on top and the denser stuff in the rest) but was still comfortable.  I only got rid of it because my girlfriend was staying over and a queen size was no longer big enough.

My current is a king size Tempurpedic Cloud Elite on regular box springs (adjustable base was out of my price range when I bought it).  It was not cheap at all, but I wanted a good bed that wouldn't end up like most spring mattresses and only last 5-7 years. I did buy it from a close friend and he guaranteed me it would last 30+ years, and being a close friend he would be eating that mattress if it didn't.  I have had some top end spring mattresses and after only a few years they end up with indentations where I sleep as the springs sag.

Complaints: I got it right after I started having back issues (facet joints, not muscular) and it is a little too soft, so when I sleep on my stomach (which is my default position), my lower back arches just a few degrees.  As the back issue got worse, I found it harder to sleep in this position.  I made the mistake of listening to my doctor when he said a single shot in my back would cure the problem permanently, so I kept the bed.  By the time I realized I would be suffering chronic back issues the rest of my life, my window to return the bed had passed and while I could have gotten my friend to take it back, it was my own fault for keeping it so long before deciding I needed something firmer.  Temperature can be an issue with these kinds of beds too.  The one I have is not too bad with heat, but I do have to choose my comforter wisely or I can overheat pretty easily.  If the bed is cold, it is firmer at first and then will get softer as it warms up.  The last complaint might seem a little TMI so I will censor it - sex and other activities on memory foam is more difficult because you sink down a little more...  You would be surprised how much this affects your view of this kind of bed.  Regarding the same issue with sinking in, a disabled friend of mine just got a hybrid bed (memory foam top with spring core) and the sinking in issue made it harder to transfer from his wheelchair to bed, and he actually strained his shoulder transferring.

Pluses:  Comfortable as hell and unless you have an arthritis issue where joints hurt when they don't move for many hours at a time, you will sleep extremely well.  You will not move as much in this bed and you will get better sleep than any other mattress.  This isn't some sales pitch, it does what it is supposed to do and you can get far deeper sleep.  If you have broad shoulders and sleep on your side, it is WAY more comfortable than a spring bed.. really sinks down where your shoulder drives into the foam and doesn't have pressure points there.  My girlfriend was never able to sleep on her stomach on regular beds because of her breasts getting too squished but she can sleep like a log on this bed in any position.  In my experience (comparing high end memory foam to high end spring beds), memory foam will outlast springs by about 3x.  I suppose if you don't weigh over 200 lbs this wouldn't be as much of a problem.

Because of my back issues, I looked at the sleep number but frankly I wasn't impressed.  Even in the top end, as you fill the air bag it feels like someone is putting a knee in your back - the pressure is not evenly distributed as it gets more firm, and it all seems to focus on the center of your body.. you feel like you are lying on a log wrapped in memory foam, which you essentially are.  If they had 4 or 5 different chambers each with their own air pressure and better support at the edge of the bed, I would spend the money on one (was looking at $9k for a split king with the power adjustable base).  A good spring mattress with a really good top and firm springs is just as good, but then you are right up to the same dollar amounts as a good quality foam mattress, and in my experience they just don't last as long.

In effort to make my current bed work with my back situation, I recently placed a large bath towel folded up directly under the mattress (between the mattress and box spring) where my back arches.  It isn't too thick (maybe 2 inches) and you can't see it when the bed is made and nobody is on it, but that little bit of extra firmness right there made all the difference in the world for me.  I can sleep on my stomach for twice as long as before (5 or 6 hours before I have to move) this way and it has been really nice.  Second, in sleeping on my side, I use a pillow between my legs to keep them lined up right.  This helps a lot with comfort and although the pillow is annoying when you have to move around, it can make a massive difference in how you feel in the morning.  I never needed to do anything like this a few years ago when my body was still healthy, and I slept so well on memory foam, but as I get older I found I needed more firmness sometimes, which makes the sleep number idea appealing, they just lack in execution.

Bottom line: If you are looking for a cheap mattress, stick with what you know.  A comfortable $300-500 spring mattress isn't going to have anything over a $300-500 foam slab and especially if only used a little will probably last just as long.  But if you are investing in your mattress (i.e. investing in your sleep), it sure sucks to have to throw a $2,000 spring mattress away after 5 years.  If I decide to make a move to a firmer mattress, I will buy a split king and get the single version of what I have for my girlfriend and go with a firmer version for me.  She is 100% sold on it.  I can't put a price on what a good night's sleep means to me - for me OR her.. I do have a memory foam mattress in my spare room for guests and they always comment on how nice it is.  It's similar to my first foam bed and I got it for free when my mom upgraded to a newer top end mattress.  It is in the same shape as the day she bought it 7 years ago.

Paid $3k for a Tempur-pedic about 5 or 6 years ago. Sleep like a mother ---smurfing--- baby every night. Sex on it is no issue. And it's still like new.

But you don't want your guests being too comfortable and overstaying their welcome. Buy the cheapest mattress you can find.

I have 3 sleep number beds. 2 of the mid-high end with their builtin topper and one of the lower end with our own feather topper.  Love them all, although I only sleep on 2 of the 3 regularly.  Well worth the money, especially for the times I've tweaked my lower back as you can adjust the bed to just the right firmness to give just the right support, in addition you can have each side have different firmness, my gf likes her side a little firmer, although I'm not sure the full size have the 2 sides as it would be too small.  My oldest is 18 years old and the newer ones have much better and quieter pumps and controls.

MisSpent Youth a Vigolix bartop,  Little Bastard a rotating tablet/display bartop,
Pin-Dog a mini pin-cab on vpforums.org  Star Wars a wedgehead pincab on vpinball.com

Not so much an issue as different, like on a waterbed, which might seem like more fun until you actually try it, lol.
Just easier to get around on a spring mattress...

Loosely related.  Freakonomics radio had an episode about mattress stores recently:
http://freakonomics.com/podcast/mattress-store-bubble/

The long and short of it is that there is a huge markup on mattresses and prices fluctuate wildly from store to store.
Every brand builds cheap models and expensive models, so you can't really go by the name on it.

Can't be too much markup on whatever $120-160 one I end up buying for the guest room.   :lol

Yeah probably the only two industries that take advantage of you more are the funeral industry and the auto industry.  Everybody has to sleep, everybody has to drive and everybody has to die.

Just go search you local alleys. You're bound to find a mattress in one of those.

Eh, not really metropolitan enough to have mattresses laying in alleys.
We do have "big trash day" twice a year.  There are always mattresses setting out then, but full size is an oddball size to find anymore.

Mattresses are one of those things I just won't buy used, even for a guest room.
When I bought one for myself, there was great conflict between this and my desire to get the best deal.
I could have saved a few hundred bucks more by getting one that someone returned during the 30 day return period.
Just couldn't bring myself to do it.

Bedbugs are such a serious problem nationwide anymore, that I'd be insanely cautious about used or "previously owned" mattresses.

All you have to do is put them in an airtight bag for awhile.  The bedbugs die off.

I would never buy a used mattress... that's like buying used underwear..
I don't have the same reservations about selling one though, lol.  But it's a lot easier to sell a 5 year old top end name brand mattress than it is a 5 year old bargain bin mattress..

If you ever want to know which mattresses have a high markup, look for the one the stores are pushing.  The same goes for just about anything you buy at a store.

Few things seem more disgusting and less necessary than buying a used mattress.

Not legal to sell them at retail in MA anyway.

You know, a long time ago, I went to a Salvation Army and they had a pile of new mattresses with the brand tags torn off.  Clearly a donation from a furniture store or the like.  Might be worth poking around a few of those if you don't have a wife hollering about NO USED MATTRESSES riding your ass.

Well, the purchase is over with as far as my guest room is concerned.
Ended up with a "Darlington Plush/Firm" from Mattress Warehouse for $190.
Seems decent for the price, but I haven't laid on it for more than a minute.
I did feel like I was going to fall asleep toward the end of that minute.  ;)

Only gripe I have is that my base is exactly 54" wide and the mattress supposed to be 54" wide, but is in fact less than 52" wide.
So I have a 1+" ledge on each side which I didn't want.  I assume it's undersized to reduce production costs.   ::)

I have a queen size memory foam, but it does get real hot in the summer.  Winter is not so bad, but the quality of rest you get is fantastic, except when it is time to get up for work...real problems there.  ;D

I know you have already purchased your mattress but when you are in the market again, look into Latex Mattresses, They do not have a lot of the issues many people complain about with the memory foam (heat, sinking into bed, hard to get out of...).   I had to get a new bed a few years ago and had never heard of latex until I started my research,  I'm very happy with mine, if I were to buy another I would try a topper to see if a like it mattress to be a little firmer.

I'll provide a link to the place where I purchased mine, I went with this company because they give you 365 days to try the mattress out, and if you do not like it you are only out about $75.00 to ship it back for a refund.  They also sell pure botanical foam which is another reason I went with them.

Memory foam and latex mattresses are expensive.

Anyway, here are the links.  I have no affiliation with this company, but this should give you enough info to educate you on what a latex mattress is.

http://www.habitatfurnishings.com/latex_mattress.html

Just realized this is the original video I watched about 6 years ago, its outdated and mentions a 180 day return policy which is not 365 days.

Also noticed an instant rebate going on that ends in a day or two.

Wife always wanted a Tempur-Pedic but hated the price tag.  No matter who you buy from, it's $3500 brand new.  I never wanted one but she's a little girl with big back problems and I'm a big dude that shakes the bed when I come home late from Curling or softball.  I basically told her, it's the most used and important piece of furniture you own, so price shouldn't be an issue.  She found a Cal King bed frame she really liked and then purchased the Cal King Tempur-Pedic.  We got it from Mattress Firm for 60 months, no interest.  So it equated too ~$65 bucks per month for 5 years.

Mentions have been made about movement being muffled when on one.  Perhaps with knock-offs, sure.  For me, I hated that feeling/thought.  Having owned/slept on one for two years now, it's a non-issue.  The Tempur-Pedic has plenty of bounce and the slight muffling you get used to real quick.  The feeling of laying down, and slightly sinking in is mystifying.  It's like the worlds concerns leave you and it's all gravy.  Now, when I come in from curling at midnight, I can slide into bed and not disturb her at all.

Thickness.  This is another section people don't do enough research on.  If the mattress isn't 11" or thicker you aren't getting the true benefits of it and you could cause harm to your body.

TLDR; Get the real thing, Tempur-Pedic only.  Get it 11" or thicker.  Price sucks, but get a good finance deal with no interest.  100% worth it.

I want to hear more about the curling.

It's awesome man, best damn winter sport period.  Two hours of shenanigans on ice following by several more drinking hours.  Huge curve for skill but it can be enjoyed by all.

Speaking as a Canadian it's basically the equivalent of cornhole or horseshoes here but with much better beer and touques.

Only Canadians could come up with a sport revolving around sliding ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- on ice.  Utterly ridiculous.  That being said it's no more ridiculous than any other sport, so carry on and drink till it gets interesting.  :)

See they really just need to eliminate all sports and have televised buffets with beer, because, let's face it, 90% of the fans just use a sporting event as an excuse to get drunk and eat junk food.
