Neph went all Emo on us?  What the...?
He found the current state of projects uninspired, and quite frankly felt it would be best to just step away since he himself had nothing BYOAC in the works.

Can't argue with that.  2015 has been a dud here.
Yeah, I can't say I blame him. He felt like his comments tended towards the negative, given that he was a straight shooter and he wanted to cut that out.

Still,  I'll miss his honest feedback, especially when things get circle jerky.

I don't even look at the hardware end of the hobby anymore.  All projects fall into two categories.  Cabs so well done with so much money thrown at them it makes me feel bad about myself or cabs that are so bad or poorly designed that the creators should be ashamed to let them see the light of day.  The middle fell away a long time ago.

Yeah.... I really don't want this to turn into a "Why I don't like BYOAC anymore" thread, but there was a lot of truth in that "New Arcade Console" thread...

I think unless we are talking restoration or recreation, the whole "mame cab" thing doesn't appeal to me anymore.  I don't mean that having a mame cabinet doesn't appeal to me, I just mean the design aspect.  At this point I just pick a design that'll work well for what I want it to do, build it really well and put a nice coat of paint on it.  Sideart and blinky buttons and what-not.... eh... I just want to play games.

That isn't to say I can't appreciate a really well done cab, it's just the wisdom of being around here since the beginning has taught me that spending 500 dollars on sideart isn't the best idea considering in a few years the technology will radically change and you might have to scrap the whole thing anyway.  I mean the whole switch from 4:3 to 16:9 monitors really threw me off.  I always thought pc monitors would be 4:3 because for computing it makes more sense.... but I guess cost won.  Also this trend to put Japanese controls on everything... I'm still resisting that one, but I think eventually we may not have a choice.

I hear you. This and the insistence on using 32"+ monitors that result in superwide cabinets. I'm not saying anyone is WRONG in doing so, per se, but it just doesn't appeal to me.

That too, Howard. Gimme a great looking restoration anyday. Spyridon's threads here are what really caught my eye. Otherwise, I'd have a X-Arcade Tankstick and call it a day. But Spyridon's restorations inspired (---fudgesicle---, I'm starting to hate that word) me to really tackle fixing up dedicated machines.

How come jamma gotta be so expensive

You know, that's probably the only aspect of this hobby I got in on the right side of.  I started buying JAMMA boards 2000-2001 and paying more than about $25 shipped was 'expensive' for a lot of them.  I mean, some games were ALWAYS expensive relative to the others, but more than $75ish for anything was fairly rare.  Flipped all those things a year or so later and cleared hundreds in profit.  Now when I stumble across them on ebay there's no way I could afford them.  Bad Dudes for $100+?  I paid $19 shipped for that.  Oh well, it funded the MAME set up and probably paid rent one month.

Yeah, there are still deals to be found, but rarely are you going to find them on eBay. Your best bet is to pick up untested boards and hope you got a good one. That happened to me with a Yie Ar Kung-Fu board. $30 shipped, works perfectly. Whew! But most of the boards I buy are from KLOV.

Most I paid for a board was like $150 for Macross, and that was shipped from South Korea. Now that board is at least $200 or GTFO. And you want a Macross Plus board? At least 3 bills on eBay.

Hell I'll pay $300 for a good board......

It's Dodonpachi $1000, Batsugun $900, Cave SH3 $600, Battle Garega $1000 or GTFO that pisses me off.....

Been kinda wishing that someone would startup a clubhouse so those who go Tully or jump ships to other sites can keep in touch. I used to like the old one until it got banned by my work internet filters as a flagrant porn site. That and every time I had it up at my desk at work everyone thought I was on a circa 1996 warez site.

I think those that buy broken boards and fix them are the smart ones right now.

This is what private facebook groups are for..

Whenever a forum dies (or turns into something a lot of users don't like) and a bunch of "internet friends" want to stick together, someone ends up starting one and eventually all the old "regulars" end up getting invited through someone.  It's kinda nice, right up until all the old issues that made them abandon the original forum start cropping up again, lol.

I think the middle is alive and "well" on Craigslist.  I see those basic cabinets with 60-1's pop up nearly every day.

I mean the whole switch from 4:3 to 16:9 monitors really threw me off.

Building a cab doesnt fall into a class war, it is realistically a culmination of skills. Something most people have come to expect  be done for them on some magical CNC. In my time here few questions have ever been asked of me, and of those more than likely Jenn just imposed her position on the subject. couple that with copyrighted content (a subject we cant even talk about) And there just isn't much left.....Goodbye my friends.

I never understood the CNC thing. I mean... it's a box. Unless you're cutting ten of them, a CNC just means you spend more time at the computer and less time building the thing. Might as well make an IKEAcade. Oh wait... IT'S BEEN DONE!

It's a cynical view on life, but the fact is, bad stuff WILL happen in your life.  Nobody makes it to the end unscathed.  And the longer you go without hardship, the more difficult it is to deal with when it happens.  I think you have the right attitude in calling it a challenge, because that means you have the ability to overcome it.

In the grand scheme of things, the only thing that can't be overcome is death, and eventually we will ALL succumb to that one.  There is ALWAYS someone who has it worse off than you (well, other than the one sorry soul who has it worse than anyone - there's always a last place.)  Remembering those things can help you get through even the toughest challenges.

You didn't just overcome a frustrating situation that was bringing you down, you turned it into a win.  This should be in the other thread.  :)

I thought the thread, for the most part, was a real downer. And I have no idea how to remove threads from my "New Replies" section. This incident was a downer, but I chose to turn it around. If anything it was more of a metaphor, (it really happened, but I was also trying to make a point).

I guess it could go in either thread, or half in each. Why not add a few flowers to the junkyard?

If a mod combined the chuff and anti-chuff threads, the forum would implode.

Done.  You're welcome.

And only just because you can....  :gobama

Look at it this way.  Science tells us that technically speaking just about anything is possible.... it might be unlikely, but the possibility exists.  That means while you were on your pc doing tedious grunt work you could have walked outside.  While outside you could have been brutally raped by a pack of wild kittens.  Our pointless drivel saved you from that extremely unlikely, yet still possible, scenario.  You are welcome.  :D

One of my wife's coworkers showed up at the weekly "eat wings, drink booze, play video games" party, sucker punched me during an outdoor jenga game, announced he had spent Thursday with a gun in his mouth, and walked around with his hand in his back pocket daring us to take a swing at him for the next two hours.

Today we get to contemplate if, where, and how we escalate this.  Sigh.

Good luck out there.

Ain't no party like a PBJ party!

We're having a "eat tacos, drink booze, play video games" night tonight, but I doubt anyone gets sucker punched.

Be safe, my friend!
