LT, thanks for sharing the back story, makes the build even that much more interesting to follow. Good for you for seeing it through and I'm sorry that your "old man" didn't get his chance to finally play some Kaboom but I'm stoked that you're bringing it to fruition.

I see the height of this cab is about 60 cm (24 inches). How are you going to play it? You can't put it on a table, the controllers will be to high. You can't put it on the floor either, then the controllers will be to low. Have you considered making it into a bartop like this:

Walmart also has a Dual screen 9" RCA DVD player for $65 that would give you 2 9" screens (from the pic it looks like both have composite inputs unlike some that only have composite in on the secondary screen) - But if you could resell the one with the DVD player for $30 - $40 or have a use for a portable DVD player - it would get you one screen fairly cheap. And the screens used in them are usually fairly decent panels - and gets you the speakers as well.

Ben Heck would be sad if you turned down that dual display because on was only the output for the other. its the LCD you need. i bet you getting a second control board for that second display isn't very difficult.

Now there's a find. I like that there are 2. I'm a big fan of identical backups. Everything I've built has at least 1 or more monitor backups. Great price too. Definitely bookmarking this.

Looks like those jacks on the one screen are just an output for the other monitor.

I don't know what size you are needing. I'm doing a mini build too with a plug n play (haven't posted yet) I talked to Tully about it. I ended up getting a 7" dual screen. it has one of those 3.5 jacks made for video. I hooked to the plug and play it looks great. If you want to cancel your order I have that exact thing i'll send it to you (freebie).As you said it sucks. Do you not have a CRT monitor? you are going VGA to composite right?

Also I got a 4:3 15" dell flat panel stripped and collecting dust.
The invertor is bad so I'm using a ballast from a cold cathode PC case light to power the back light if you want to go that route.

I checked a Salvation Army and Goodwill by me but all I could find was a nice 14" and a ---smurfy--- 14" television. Nothing in the 9" range. Im gonna check a couple more Goodwills this weekend. What became of that 9" tv that was on Fleabay?

I would love to keep all my builds, bud I like it to make new things, and with selling my builds, I can build a new one, so it will keep everybody happy, without complaining about the money from the other side

Right now I'm lurking around for new ideas, but the ultimate dream will be a real mans-cave with DeLuxe arcade cabinets.... but I don't have the room or money for it

So bringing it to a self-made home version is alright for now

Love your work anyway, but my advice would be, sell some things to keep everybody happy. specially in these economy heavy days it's good to find a balance for hobby and a living

I've actually tweaked the images a bit more this afternoon. It's more okish now. I've got some 13" tv's and a couple 15" crts. But I'm aiming to keep this on the smaller side if possible.

A 9" crt tv would be the shazzle, but I'll probably go with the little ---saint's minion--- of a screen I've got now. But who knows? Those 9" dvd deals JDFan linked are tempting. Still waiting on a converter for now.

Not sure if you have a Menards around you but they sell pre made cabinet shelfs that you may be able to cut to size. Essentially its just prelaminted particle board. Might want to look into it. That way you dont have to stain. I like the initial design of the CP but I feel you need to incorporate more of the feel of the Atari.

It wouldn't be as versatile but I'd keep the USB on the inside and add some Atari ports to use original controllers.

Was at a party last night playing pool in the basement and they had a 2600 in a box and a gold star TV on the shelf.
I of course had to hook them up it still worked!
No kaboom but they had asteroids.

I'm planning my next build and was thinking of doing my second Vigolix but now I'm thinking a mini may Tully is the way to go. Hope I have half as much success modifying Tux Math as you did with Kaboom.

I'm catching up on build threads....LT this looks incredible. I lost my dad right around the same time you did, I have memories of him playing Laser Blast and Space Invaders on our 2600 (we also had Kaboom and it was a favorite of mine).

I love that you are doing this, I love the reasons why, I love the game and I love that Atari look. The bomb might have been cool, but this has a much better feel to it (especially if you can figure out how to add some Atari switches)!

Looks snazzy. I feel like the CP is at too sharp of an angle. It, to me, would feel awkward using the spinner at that angle. I'm digging the fake atari look though. The cartridge was a nice touch.

This is looking great. Is your dad's plug and play like Atari going to make it into the build? It would wouldn't take away from the look if the CP was on a hinge and the remote and an av switch were underneath. Even if you never play the all in one it may be nice to have something of your dads incorporated in to this build.

Atari cabinet version. I keep repeating the KISS principle in my head.

Not as complicated or time consuming as a brick pattern but I'm digging the Atari console feel. Dealing with the dust and whatnot that'll gather in those grooves will be annoying.

My attempt to stain the Asteroids cab didn't go well. I want another shot.

Hey L.T that looks awesome. You said you messed up staining what did you do? How did you do it?
Did you use that good finished plywood or veneer it, or did you use plain plywood?
I've done a lot of staining over the years and there are a few things you have to do to make it look good.
1. Really sand good to get all the and marks out.You have to go down to prob 220 sandpaper
2. Get every bit of oil off the area by taking alcohol or acetone and clean the areas.It will make light and dark spots if you don't
3. when you put the stain on go with the grain of the wood with a brush, a little goes a long way.always wipe off excess
4. if it looks bad sand it with 220 and do it again.
5. If you have small areas that are really light you can lightly stain those areas leave it till it dries and lightly rub.
6. each type of wood takes stain differently and looks different it' something to remember.
6. When you stain you always need to clear because it looks like --I'm attempting to get by the auto-censor and should be beaten after I re-read the rules-- if you don't.
7. I used minwax dark walnut on that last one I did.
8. Also make sure to scrape any signs of wood glue or stain won't stick in that area
Stain is tough it's not very forgiving, it will show every F'up and sand mark

Here is just a quick ebay search. You could pilfer the switches from the Atari and nuke the rest. And thats just from a non working search. I'm sure more would pop up doing a search for Atari 2600.

About those switch levers, you could always make them out of aluminum round stock. Easy to shape with a sander, bore a hole in the side for the pivot, and would probably look better, JMO.
But hey, it's your project so do what you want. Im sure it will look great, based on your other projects.

Good call.
Just remember not to use a "regular" grinder stone on that aluminum.
Aluminum melts while being ground and can flow into the stone's crevices, leaving aluminum in the stone.
When the aluminum ~~cools~~, (expands from heating during the next grinder use), it expands and can crack the stone, causing it to possibly fly apart at a later time. Not a good thing especially if its a bench grinder and you are standing in front of it when it blows.
But aluminum is a soft metal and can be easily and safely shaped with a sander. (Just have plenty of spare belt or pad media for the sander.)

I was thinking the same thing. Instead of a wooden "knob" just drill a hole in the sliding piece, insert and glue the aluminum round stock piece. (After you have sanded a rounded edge on the exposed end of the stock.)
Does the original Atari power switch stay in the up position or spring return?

birch isn't the problem, Finished plywood is finished plywood. All pretty much the same. Just make sure if you stain use minwax, I think it works best. I use this for the finish:

I'm no expert but if you want it to not have blemishes, don't screw the sides just glue them and use those cheap angle braces to hold it together till the glue dries. That spray is the bomb. you can't hardly mess it up.

It just didn't make sense to me that I had great results the first time and it was ---smurfy--- the second time. I didn't apply it differently. Painted the oak indoors and painted the birch outside in the sun. I don't know what I'm doing when it comes to this stuff. Painting and the like are my weakest areas.

This is the stuff I used.

Thought this time around, I'd try just plain old stain. Not poly mix. And do lots of testing before going near the cab.

Could of been a bad batch or (i don't know where you are) but up in NY state I've known a few people that had problems with paint because the store let it freeze.

I've done a lot of my trim with polyshades and water based stains+poly and can't remember having too many issues.

Here's how they've updated it.

And here's it is after a few edits. I reused my numbers from the Kaboom! edit and killed all the background stuff. Much easier to see what the hell is going on with the black background.

It's a great remake. They did a good job. I think I'll have this on the cab as a hidden game. Button on the back to launch or something. Maybe I can make a cartridge for this one too and have them actually trigger a script that launches the game when it's inserted into the cab? It worked well for the guy who made Gameman, the 3 foot tall fully functioning Gameboy.

Worth a shot.

Edit: And I'm finished. Text, numbers, and images are finished. Scripts are written and it's ready to go.

That's a great catch from back then

I did played this back then on my first ever console the Philps Videopac G7000 ( Magnavox Odyssey in the USA )
It was a great game, lots of fun and great 2 player game also.

Just nice to see that back then, you had a lot of fun with the gameplay and the graphics where the imagination in your head.
