Ok, some progress.

I debated keeping the 'too big' base as is, and putting some damp proof membrane onto it, but in the end decided to correct it. It took me from early morning to 3pm to move the walls, remove the floor, cut the joists, re-level and put everything back. I'm glad I did it though, it would have nagged at me every time I saw it.

We're in the middle of an unusually long dry spell for September here in the UK, so the lack of a roof hasn't been an issue. Unfortunately, I'm back at work after some hols, and shed work is limited to an hour or so a day.

'Moving in' was a milestone. It was going to be easier to get the workbench through the wall space rather than the door, so I did that before continuing:

And I've since started the roof framing (so I could get a tarp up there properly in case of rain) and continued with the final wall.

When the walls and roof are done, I can work inside the shed at my own pace, finishing the windows and doors. Hopefully I'll be able to crack on with that this weekend.

James' shed looks exactly like that now, complete with the tarp roof.

Looking good, nice bench too.  I am still wondering how you are attaching the frame together though.  Are you using 5" screws and screwing it together, or are you toenailing in some screws (or pocket holes)?  (That is another reason to turn all the studs, you can nail or screw them together with standard 2.5" or 3" screws.)

And did you add more framing to that front wall or just plank over what you show in the pic?

And are those wall planks going to get sealed or covered with something waterproof?

Two coats of this:

I've just finished it, but its too dark to take a photo now.

Looking good, nice bench too.

Thanks  ;D Made that so I could make my Insert Coffee project

I'm starting to get that now...  ;D I'm using long screws and toe-nailing shorter ones where appropriate (I don't like screwing into end-grain)

Just discovered major cock-up #2. I was putting the tongue and groove planks on the back wall and realised that the wall was upside down! It wouldn't matter - but rain will pool in the groove that way.  I'm going to have to turn it around  :banghead:. At least I didn't put the roof on yet.

I went to help some female friends of mine paint their house a few weeks back and it was the first time I had seen their house in the daytime (usually go over for beers later in the evening) and I realized that on half the house, they put the lap siding on sideways!  I suppose whoever built the house 40 years back thought it was unique and looked great (which it didn't IMO), but the whole purpose of lap siding is to keep water out and still be able to "breathe", but in order to seal it up from the rain they had caulked it all so it was sealed up.. I wasn't sure if I should laugh or feel bad that these women owned this sorry excuse for a house..

At least you caught your mistake before you discovered the wood all rotted out from moisture in a year or two..

Back wall got flipped back over. It wasn't as hard as I thought it might be thankfully.

So I finished framing the roof out

And then got the roof on top. I have left the top pieces loose for now - I reckon it will help me when I nail the roof felt on - access is tricky as I'm so close to the fence and hedge. It's a tradeoff of having extra floor space... I figured I wont be putting the roof felt on very often, so I can put up with the hassle.

The tarp went back on overnight last night, but this evening I got the felt roofing on - without nails for now. Better than the plastic sheeting, and as long as its not windy (not forecast to be) I'm all nice and watertight now

That doesn't look strong enough (IMO) to hold a garden roof, It would more than likely sag and water damage over time.... Other than that looks like a fun project. ;D

I agree with that.  As it is the weight of wet sod is going to eventually be an issue.

2x4 roof would be OK if they were 16 inches on center.. but I would be afraid to be up there putting felt or shingles up personally.  As it is, it should support the weight of the plywood, felt, shingles, and maybe even a little snow with no problem, but there is no doubt in my mind that it would start to sag quickly if any real weight was put on it.  asphalt shingles alone are very heavy.

My shed and my "tree fort" (sans tree) are both 2x4 roofs and I have been on both and it is barely squishy, but that is with one every 16 inches.

Yeah, that's the thing with sod.  When it is wet it gets HEAVY.  You have to pretty much plan for it to be 75% water at times.  If you're looking at 5" of soil you'd have to calculate for 3"+ of water weight for the whole surface area + the weight of the produce and soil.

Well, it was always going to be a possible extra in the future. If I decide to go that way, I'll look into more reinforcement I guess. Thanks for the tips/advice.

Next up: Windowsills.

Drip by drip progress - fitting in an hour here and there.

Windowsill under construction:

Lots of Norm-like woodshops would have one of these for long pieces of stock:

I have a window that opens next to my workbench that's exactly the same height as the workbench top

Extra coat of paint and a door:

And a roof trim:

Luckily, I've had professional help recently.

One of my reasons for a nicer shed was that the kids often ask to spend time with me in there, or to do some sort of 'project'. It was never very safe for them before with sharp things balanced at head height, etc....

The window height to the bench idea is a neat trick.

Chopping the mortices for the hinges on the window. (Note the 'jig' I made in the background to help me accurately make 40 mitred 1/4 round beads)

Fairly watertight now (not quite sure what I'm going to do with the last window yet).

I've moved in now, and apart from some trim that is probably never going to get done, I'm finished.

Here is a slightly ropey panorama of the inside.

I'll post an outside picture this weekend when I'm home during the daylight!

Now I need a lock.. heres where I am so far
