Looking for ideas...hidden room
« on: February 17, 2014, 01:16:24 pm »
Okay so I'm making this here hidden room thing, it's actually a 'gun vault' (a requisite for easy storage of firearms in Canada).   Anyway, I've got it tucked away, and thinking of hiding the entrance behind a bookcase (basic ply construction, 5 shelves, on a hinge in front of the door opening, likely a caster on the bottom for weight).  Any tips on a) construction of the swinging bookcase, and b) cool add-ons in the gun room?

Room will feature LED lighting (backlit on the most interesting guns), a motion sensing camera, a control panel (for lights), in-wall first aid kit (you never know what can happen).  But it's small (6'x7') so it's not like I can get a TV in there :)

Any ideas for cool 'wow' items I can install?  Walls are either concrete or a mix of wood, rebar, binder twine and concrete board.  The actual door is a steel exterior door (with reinforced steel around the deadbolts).

This is where I'm at in designing.  So far the room is built and the birch plywood is up (not stained).  Not sure what the back wall is going to be made of, I'm not sold on the brick, might be too dungeon-y.  Apologies to those that are anti-gun ;)

So do you go in there and masturbate while you look at all your precious, precious guns?

In that case, beanbag chair, bottle of lotion, and box of kleenex ought to cover it.

I couldn't care about the guns, but the caster will eventually leave a mark on the floor where it travels, which could lead a smrt person to discover said vault.

Is the vault for security or secrecy?  Having a hidden room is cool but if you really need it to be impossible to find now you have little issues like Ed mentioned.

Even Kevin Flynn couldn't hide his secret lab behind the Tron cab forever.

I still would put a TV in there...perhaps a LED tv that could swing out from the wall.

If it were my room to design, I would take out the chair, add in a sit/stand workbench with a stool.

Perhaps one designed to fit in with your paneling. That way you still have a place to sit in there but it's also practical for cleaning/maintenance.
I would still put a TV/monitor in this case...but now on the bench wall...

I thought it was supposed to be a vault. You start adding furniture in there, it turns into a compound.  >:D

Although I agree that a workbench and stool would be very practical for cleaning and maintenance.

I'm leaning towards this motorcycle suit version:

Joking aside, it's a fairly small space.  You're not going to spend a lot of time in there.
Little touches like the lighting would add to the "awe factor" when showing off your collection.

I'd go with 2 stages of lighting.  One red or green tinted underground bunker setup, maybe even with bunker style lights.

The other would be bright useable light you could work by.
If you have collectible items, descriptions and old black and white photos of them in the field would be pretty cool.
That's the way I'd go about it anyway.

If you don't like the bunker look, go overboard on the wood and one rich complimentary color.

Food and beer was disappearing from my girlfriend's fridge.  She assumed her teenage son was sneaking the beer and eating the food.
Turns out, the guy living in the basement of the unrented house next door was taking it.  :o

If this helps, here is a visual.  I think on the back wall I will just do the same furniture grade plywood and shelf, just seems to work (I've installed the ply and shelves in the room already, going to stain them today).

Maybe the chair is a little creepy.  I really don't plan to spend a lot of time in there, and if I can't figure out a decent cold air return setup, hardly any at all.

Make sure the bottom of the bookcase door (and really, shouldn't it be an arcade cabinet door, like Tron: Legacy?) doesn't scrape the floor. That is how they always find secret rooms on TV. Oh, and turn the lights off in there when you are done. That is the other way. Damn CSIs.
Completed projects: Pac bartop (Plug & Play), 30th Anniversary Pac cab (MAME), Point Blank (PS1), Centipede (arcade hardware- light restore), VS. Super Mario Bros (arcade hardware- light restore) Tetris Cocktail (SNES), Arcade Classics upright (60-in-1, then MAME), Multi-Raiden (arcade hardware). Pac Man vs.(Gamecube),

Working on: Pinball Re-theme, Homebrew arcade arena shooter

Yeah I think I'm going to try and avoid the cabinet on the ground.  I picked up 2 extra heavy duty hinges, so there will be a total of 4 on the shelf, and 12 -6" screws through the doorframe.  The only trick will be making it not "float" in the air.

How was he getting inside?

She never locked the doors to her house until this happened.  She does now.
This is still pretty common in rural areas and a lot of people take pride in living where they don't have to lock their doors.

She owns the property next door where the guy was crashing, so knew something was going on when she saw a light on in the basement at night.
She discovered a sleeping bag and backpack in the basement and pieced things together.  The guy moved on when he found out he'd been discovered.  No idea who he was.....or if it was even a he.

Yikes!  Good way to get shot in some parts of this country.

Good way to get shot here, but he only entered the house when nobody was home and didn't steal or disturb anything else.
That's how it usually goes in places where everyone has smurfs.
They wouldn't dare break in while someone is home.  I'll refrain from further comment that may send us back to P&R.

Dude, I lost it on that smurf pic.

 :laugh2:

Didn't even know you could own smurfs in Canada.  Didn't Michael Moore hand them out at the border once?

Note the smurfberry boxes, for storage of extra smurfberries.

To own smurfs I have to take a 3 day, 20 hour safety and handling course (not online).  They send your test results in (an 80 or above is a pass), to be confirmed by the Chief Smurf Officer's office.  They then send your test results back to you (usually 3-4 weeks).  THEN you put $80 in an envelope and send your tests BACK to the CSO.  Then there is a 28 day cool-off period, after which they do a background check and phone references (including your spouse and any and all 'conjugal partners').  If that's okay, then they take another 2 or 3 months and maybe send you out a license that you MUST keep valid (renew on time), in order to own any kind of smurf.  You also consent to a daily automated criminal check for the rest of your life.   Oh, and you HAVE to be a member of a shooting range in order to keep restricted smurfs, under which handsmurfs fall into.  Absolutely true story.

However, after that, you can own pretty much anything, except any smurfs that were in the Terminator movie, automatic smurfs, smurfs under 3" and of course AK-smurfs.

One other difference... if I was to pull out a smurf and discharge it at an intruder in my own house, there is a 80% chance I am going to prison.  There is almost no defensible reason to pull a smurf on anyone in Canada, like ever.

Yeah I think I'm going to try and avoid the cabinet on the ground.  I picked up 2 extra heavy duty hinges, so there will be a total of 4 on the shelf, and 12 -6" screws through the doorframe.  The only trick will be making it not "float" in the air.

I looked into doing this a while back, but never pulled it off.  Here's a good how-to I found way back along with the hinges that seemed to be ideal for the job
http://www.garymkatz.com/ChartsDrawings/pivot_bookcase.html
http://www.epivots.com/rixson-370.aspx

Also, if you're going to do it without a wheel, then make sure to make the back panel really thick since it will drastically help with keeping the bookcase from eventually sagging.

I couldn't care about the guns, but the caster will eventually leave a mark on the floor where it travels, which could lead a smrt person to discover said vault.

The steel door opens into the room, and I don't want to make a bookcase out of the door (hard to hide the locks).

Man... some of those hidden rooms are cool... but try explaining one of those hidden playrooms to a firefighter.  The firefighter might punch you in the head.

I'm not negative and bitter like you, but in this case I totally agree with you. ;) A child might go to his safe room during a fire, and most of those had no windows, and hidden entrances.  Death traps to be honest.

You can hide the locks behind a hollowed out book.  That being said making the door out of a bookcase could prove to be a pain in the buns.

Most of them looked like there was a sufficient gap to swing open the bookcase and just had a strip of wood hiding the necessary gap for clearance.  Not exactly hidden but very easy to overlook.

Okay, anyone have ideas for mounting smurfs to the wall?  I have a felt-covered smurf wall, but need a way to mount smurfs that looks good.  I have a bunch of rare earth magnets with cup mounts that are great for holding up a lot of weight, but most smurfs aren't made of metal anymore.  So any ideas past pegboard for a mount?  So far I'm thinking long wood dowels with a double-threaded screw in one end, but something a little cooler might be cool, just looking for ideas.  I could even weld something up but it might not be 'polished' enough to look good.

I would just drill a hole for each of the two points that you wanted to bear the minion weight. and tap a dowel stained with the same color as your paneling in there.

I am no expert on saint's minions, but if they were automatic, wouldn't holding them up with rare earth magnets make them more likely to jam?

Full automatic smurfs are prohibited here.  Thinking of how they are put together, I don't think any of the semiauto smurfs I have would be affected by magnets.  Plus, the magnets don't stay on the smurf, they stay on the wall.

Turn it into a arcade game and stick velcro on the minions,  and draw a big bullseye on the felt.  Or if you feel lucky,  just load and cock those minions prior to the toss.   ;D

I figured the magnets would be on the walls! I guess what I am getting at is that 1) residual magnetism left behind in the moving metal parts would increase friction and B) residual magnetism left behind in the moving parts would hold any minute bits of metal in place that would normally not hang around for too long. I've never owned any minions myself. So I am probably just talking out of my arse  ;D

There is already one there, its where I live and post from!

Damnit, I knew my beer was going somewhere....

That's just creepy. Reminds me of that 80's flick, "Real Genius."

Sorta reminds me of a dude livin' in his moms basement. sorta! ;)

Hey, I just had a thought. If the magnetism definitely won't effect (affect? Damn, always mix those two up) the moving parts of your automatic minions, you can use magnets to hold up even your plastic minions, since there are at least a few metal parts in there. Just add more rare earth magnets in the spaces you want to keep the plastic ones (",)

Just be sure not to accidentally put your 1911 minion in your glock minion space, or you may never get it back down again :duckhunt

Rare earth where possible, and long wood dowels with brass casings on the ends.  Should look pretty good I think.   Just working on accent lighting.

You know, when I was in high school, I got some awfully good advice.  Essentially my dad sat me down and told me that if I ever implied my girlfriend was any less than a perfect lady, her dad was going to take a pistol and shoot me, and no jury would convict him because I had it coming.  Her dad was from Oklahoma, so he knew how this worked.

After we had been married a few years, I relayed this story to my wife.  "Yeah, he probably would have.  I always wondered why you were never bragging to your friends..."

Gun threat, even by proxy, works.

That looks like an airsoft Glock mag sitting to the left of your 2 real steel mags. What are you running for airsoft guns? Picked up a PDW a few weeks ago (gbbr), and me and a buddy are having a great time running reload drills (lot cheaper than the real thing too).

Spent 20min searching the net for a cool way to hang guns to help you out, but only found the usual items. Looking forward to see what you come up with.

Good eye!

That mag is actually for that P226 metal BB 'gun'.  I bought one of those before I went and bought a "real" German 226 to see if I like the feel of the thing.  I have a couple of airsoft minions, but it's honestly crazy to spend the money o them, when a couple hundred extra gets you the real thing.  Heh, they are next to a couple of real sig 226 mags though :)

I am trying to keep my actual hoard out of public images.

I am heading to HD tomorrow to look for bulk wood dowels that will fit in a .38 special or .44 magnum casing.  Someone else sent me the idea, that the ones that won't work with magnets be held up with the wood dowels capped in actual spent brass.

Well room is done, I just have to populate it properly.  I'm building a control panel with an arduino and some switches and LEDs to control the mood lighting.  I'll be finally working on the actual 'hidden' part of it shortly.

my wife won't let me own any of these things...

but she's down with me digging up the yard and installing a giant underground concrete d-day bunker.  :dunno

maybe i'll try the firearms thing again after the bunker is complete.  she'll change her mind once the zombies start coming out.

My wife keeps bugging me to get a firearm.  She's a crack shot since her dad owned a gun shop for 20 years.  Personally, I've never fired a handgun.  I'd like to find a 20ga camper's helper for the house.  That'll split the difference.

It's not unusual to see open carry here.

I have been on the edge about getting one. No interest in hunting, but I love target shooting. My wife wants me to get a minion, and she lives in a country where all firearms are banned. Probably part of the reason she is so fascinated by them.

I have an aunt who is a national quickdraw champion. I would love to get a revolver and learn that art.

Slingshots and air guns always scratched the itch for me.  I've learned that slingshot ability is inversely proportional to gainful employment, so when you find yourself nailing difficult shots too frequently you know you need to reconsider your direction in life.  For me, it was a, "well, ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---, guess I should go to grad school after all" moment one afternoon.

Why do you have to store guns in a locked room in Canada?

JoergSprave  :)

We have very specific rules about minion storage here in Canadastan.  Especially restricted items, which are registered with the RCMP.  Improper storage charges can result in prison time, fines, confiscation and revocation of a minion license.  So having everything in a secure room goes a long way to prove that you were trying to satisfy safe storage regulations.  Plus it's hopefully a good way to keep crooks away.

The RCMP just today made specific minions (swiss arms 'green' rifles) prohibited, and therefore illegal to own.  People who now own those items are required by law to turn them in, without compensation, to have them destroyed.  Failure to do so could (and would) result in:

guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 10 years and to a minimum punishment of imprisonment for a term of
(i) in the case of a first offence, three years, and
(ii) in the case of a second or subsequent offence, five years;

It's tough to be an enthusiast up here...

Same BS in the USVI.  There were legal to own, but you had to declare firearms the instant they arrived on the island.

But, guess what?  Go to the police station and they'd be out of forms that week.  Two days later, your house would get raided at 2am and all your guns confiscated.  A month later, someone was probably murdered with it.  (the chief of police stole a gun from the inventory there, used it to murder his son, and then faked paperwork to say that ownership had been transferred to him.  FBI can't touch him, he's been a local senator down there for years)

So, thanks to people that told us, "guns aren't a problem down there, bring all of them you want" we had to keep them hidden and undeclared down there.  When my parents finally left, they just gave most of them to a trusted friend that could bribe the proper people to get the paperwork.  Otherwise they were going to be thrown in the ocean, which was the option I was angling for.

The family heirloom made it back "legally" but I'd rather not speculate on the form cooking that went into that process.

Yeah it's pretty messed up here.  We have anti gun groups openly confessing that they hope there's another gun shooting just so they can finally ban guns.  I mean, that's messed up beyond belief.  The ironic twist is that every legal gun owner is praying and hoping with every ounce of will that there will NEVER be another school shooting for the rest of time.  Funny how that works eh?
The hypocrisy continues down south there:
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/california-state-senator-leland-yee-arrested-in-federal-raid/
So enjoy them while you can, they're doing everything they can to make sure guns are only in the hands of the police and the criminals. :)

Oh and yeah, we have to lock, disable, hide, bury, cement our guns here.  Laws and regs that I obediently obey and exceed.

haha I think they proved that it was hoarders waiting at wal mart at 6:30am that was actually buying the ammo.  DHS released their "hoarding" numbers and they were big, but nothing compared to redneck joe and his 50,000 rounds of .223 buried in jerry cans in the backyard lol.  I was actually watching youtube vids of guys secretly filming ammo hoarders :)

Still, made it tough to find stuff up here.  We were getting norinco ammo on the cheap for about a year, like $300 for 1200 brass rounds, but someone stepped in and stopped it, rumour is DHS had a hand in it, but then the tinfoil hats come out.  I just want enough for a day at the range, I'll reload it all if I have to.  1000 rounds a week of my shooting calibers and I'm golden.  Spring is coming, and on thaw days you can go to the range and get garbage bags full of brass out of the puddles and mud if you get there before the other treasure hunters!

Good work Zakk, very classy and cozy looking (maybe you can put a cot in there and snuggle up with your AR and a good book ). Is the book case portion locked too, or just the door to the room? Probably wouldn't hurt to hide some kind of gate latch on top so it doesn't swing open when someone grabs the Atari out.

I'm going to make up a pin lock system for the bookcase, right now it's held with 2 1" rare earth magnets so it is held against the wall pretty good, but I def want it on there solid.  I was thinking a cotter pin or hinge pin through a couple of pieces of metal I'll fabricate.

The door is getting 2x deadbolts, hinge bolts and has an alarm on it.  Inside there is going to be a motion detecting camera hooked up to the net.  :)   Plus there's 2 huge german shepherds that sleep in front of it.

Yep.  I am very progressive/liberal, yet I support strong gun rights.  My ticket tends to look like a shotgun target.  I vote based on research and some Repubs are very liberal and some Dems are very conservative.  All depends on the person and their history.

Man o man.  I've been playing so much with my point and click murder toys I actually shot a business card in half with a 9mm :)   I hit a rubber duck at 150 yards with a greasy mosin nagant made in 1942 (love that cheap old pile of lumber and iron!).  I swear there is nothing better than a hidden man cave for improving your accuracy with your toys.

I should mention that they just started letting us get tannerite up here legally.  That's right, explosive that can be detonated with .22lr!  Man oh man, life is sweet.

The gun room has a fully functional TOS bridge control panel, motion sensor cameras, and sea bass with lasers.

Oh, and this is cool....Digital Extremes (the guys who made UT), had us out to record us shooting for sound effects for WARFRAME.   Supposedly they have video of our whole group out shooting, they set up an actual recording studio at the range, that was fun.  So there you go, only good things happen when you build a little fort.  :)

Sea bass with lasers.  I wonder if that grills well.

Nice, I just went out to the bush and recorded a bunch of gun sounds for a project of mine. The whole day was a success.

You damn Canadians and your laws....

...oh wait. I live in BC. I think the law depends on whereabouts you live, and who is around to care. Where we went, there's nobody around to care. We had a few rifles and shotguns. Nothing too crazy. But good times anyways.

Yup rifles and shotguns are good, but LORD HELP YOU if you dare venture into the wilderness with a  .44 mag pistol or :gasp: an AR-15!

That right there is the key.  Drive far enough and nobody would know if you built a full scale wooden navy and held authentic marine battles.

You can get away with anything until you start bragging about it.  As soon as someone else knows, everyone else knows.

Something to think about when it comes to incessantly bragging about exploits online.

There are a LOT of isolated inland bodies of water in Canada.  Those are the places you'd want to do something like above.  There is no fresh water Coast Guard.

Actually... our ministry ---Deutsche Frankfurters--- patrol the inland lakes like vultures.  They can search and seize without warrants.  I have been anal probed at least 10 times in my life by these monsters.  Anywhere there's water, these guys are there making sure you aren't drinking out of it, peeing into it, (god help you) fishing in it or even looking at it.  I was once on an inland lake in a small canoe up north and they backed up a truck and dropped sea-doos out the back with ministry ---Deutsche Frankfurters--- on them.  They came and checked everyone on the lake for license and illegal catches.  It was like james bond.  In fact, they can regulate what you do on your own property, if you are fortunate/unfortunate to have any kind of water on or through it.

Yet, no problem bulldozing a river or filling in a wetlands to make apartments for additional tax revenue....

(sorry I really don't like the ministry ---Deutsche Frankfurters---)

Where the heck is that?  In NS you can camp out on an tiny island for a two weeks and not see another person.  There was a lake where I grew up that if you were on it, and saw another person, you'd be thinking"who the hell is THAT guy" for days.

I'm talking outside of the "within 100 miles of the US border" part of Canada.

It was like that on the beaches in the Caribbean.  One other car on the beach?  Too crowded, we're driving to the next one.  Too bad I never got into more trouble than poaching lobsters, I suppose.

Muskokas.  Actually almost anywhere in Ontario.

If you go farther north you get eaten.  Everyone knows that.  That's why nobody is there.  Eaten.

Oh man, if there's one thing you DO NOT want to get caught doing in NS, it's poaching lobsters... you'll end up chained to a dock post at low tide.

Ok so here it goes.  I would enclose the guns in some character.  What I mean by that is, instead of just having a gun on a wall, perhaps add some color to it, a rich maroon or dark forest green, to give it that estate look.   In terms of doors, here is a great article on how to build a bookcase door.

http://prepforshtf.com/build-secret-bookcase-door/#.VIH_MHu3ExJ
Dont worry about putting a chair in there, unless you want to make the room bigger and make it a man cave, in that case add some scotch and a cigar humidor for some more character building, just make sure to have a proper ventilation system..lol

This is where I'm at in designing.  So far the room is built and the birch plywood is up (not stained).  Not sure what the back wall is going to be made of, I'm not sold on the brick, might be too dungeon-y.  Apologies to those that are anti-gun ;)
