« on: January 10, 2014, 04:28:27 pm »
So I picked up the DVD for $5 and told my older daughters about it.  They are 11 and 9.  I explained for guys around my age and a few years young than me (43), it's considered a classic and must see movie.

My oldest daughter asked if it was in black and white.

 :lol  :lol

On this subject...

Last night I was showing my sons the design concept I have for my gameroom sign.  The gist is that it's going to be heavily referencing the 3D moving guys in the Money for Nothing video.  I figured that's pretty much completely recognizable, right?  Everybody will get it?

Both kids said the same thing.  "I don't know, Dad.  That is really obscure.  I bet nobody has even seen this video."

VH1 won't even play it anymore.  The classic rock stations cut out some of the lyrics, too.

Luckily, the stations around here haven't touched it (Lawton, OK and Wichita Falls, TX)

Around here they don't touch it.  They also don't touch the occasional swears in stuff like Alice In Chains or Pearl Jam.

I remember the whole debacle about Money for Nothing. I totally get the gameroom sign idea.
Also I'm 32 and for people my age and a few years younger, the goonies is a big deal.

True story

this past thanksgiving i went to Target's pre Black Friday sale. While in line i noticed that they setup tons of merchandise next to the lines, I'm assuming to pick up a few impulse buys.

Two kids in front of me. One is in his late teens and another is not older than about 12. Youngest kid sees 'The Goonies' on dvd and says, "I hate that movie".

Let's just say you guys were really close to seeing my mugshot on TV over some Black Friday related crime.....

I didn't care too much for the movie when it came out.  I must have been just old enough.  At any rate I watched it with my youngest last year and really enjoyed it.   He was dumb-founded that the older brother was the guy from MIB3.

It's just so damn noisy, I don't think those kids ever shut up.  Plus - pirates in Oregon.  C'mon.

When I watch it nowadays, I'm more entertained trying to catch all the flubs.  I think they call him Josh at least 5 times in that thing.

And I'm still not sure how they got away with "one eyed willie."  Laughed ---my bottom--- off when you have to fight him in Torchlight 2.

It's a classic.  I'm not really sure how anyone can take fault in it.  My only gripe is that they cut the octopus.  I want that scene put back in.  :)

I Loves the Goonies!   How can you not?

I remember thinking about trying to reproduce "Slick Shoes",  as a kid.

I think I recall seeing the Octopus scene, and thinking it looked cheesy.   But the problem taking it out, was that in the end... the
kids started talking about it..  which make it seem like they were telling lies...  and that was not what most of them would have done,
especially after that whole ordeal.   It annoyed and angered me a bit .. even as a kid, when I saw that scene.

But overall, It a very fun romp.  Great musical score.  Great adventure movie with a lot of unique characters, cool mechanical gadgets, humor, great cast of actors, Pirates Treasure, a great Cindi Lauper song / video, and a lot of heart.

  Your My Greatest Invention.

I still want to make a Goonies Pinball machine...

Just for the record the scene is still cut.  If you watch it in any format on tv it is still missing.   I saw the Hd remaster on hd-net just a couple of months ago.... it's still not in there.

It's pretty obvious that pbj is trolling though.  He chimes in and says he hates the film and then cites the dvd releases in regards to that comment. I wouldn't know man.  I enjoy the film but I'm not such a fan that I need to own a copy.  How do you hate a film and have multiple versions of it in your collection again?

The Octopus scene was cut out in the theaters (at least as far as I can remember). In other words, it's supposed to be cut out.

I believe the Octopus made its first and only (that I know of) TV broadcast appearance sometime in the mid 90's. I don't recall the octopus making an appearance again until the DVD release sometime in 2000.

There's quite a few plot holes caused by missing footage. Ever notice the map has burn marks but no accompanying scene for it? I'm mystified as to why the octopus is such a big deal to the fans. It was never there in the theatrical release and was added as filler in the one TV broadcast that had it.

I don't own a single copy of it, but it was all over dork forums like this when the DVD came out with the octopus scene.

Howard, of all people, should know how important it is to be right at every moment, even in situations where nobody gives a ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- or cares.

Uggh - you guys got that Cindy Lauper song stuck in my head now.

But yes, great film. Now I feel like firing up the C64 disk and see if I can get farther than I used to. IIRC, the octopus scene that was cut was the basis for the second-to-last level as per the instruction sheet.

Yup, that scene was garbage.  Glad it was cut.

There are times when I really hate on CGI...  but just the same, poor looking & poor puppetry skills, can be just as bad, if not worse.

Its kinda funny that Richard Donner, along with Chris Columbus and Steven Spielberg, could not pull off a better octopus scene. Spielberg especially. I'd want that scene deleted too if my name was gonna be billed on the film.

that emulator likely used MIDI samples for the instruments. it probably sounds 10x better than the original C64.

Probably, but I'd rather the original music.  :dunno

Heh, the C64 actually had a great little sound chip (SID 6581) that's quite versatile and has been used by many a musician (both mainsteam and amateur.)

As that chip contained some analog circuitry, which is not yet 100% simulated in emulators as of yet, it's likely that clip's audio isn't even accurate anyhow (though, admittedly, only a hard-core audiophile would really notice a difference.)

I love the C64 version. The Goonies (and the videogame) were the basis of many doodles in Math class. Endless dungeons with traps, waterfalls, plumbing going up to houses... The best hing about the C64 game is that it was one of the first cooperative games- me and my brother played together to complete the levels. I don't recall any cooperative game before this one...

LOL. Sword of Vermilion on the Genesis let you play all the music throughout the game. The instruction manual actually suggests using the Genie's headphone jack to record the music and listen to it while not playing the game.

I don't recall much else but the game sucked ass. The only Genesis title I went out of my way to get rid of. The dungeons were such a pain in the ass the manual had a section dedicated to writing notes. The fight animation looked like the guy was jerking off and the final dungeon was entirely in the dark. It was and still is the only Genesis title that prompted heavy use of the Game Genie just to get to the end.

no happy medium with the Genesis games. they were easy as hell, or you had to cheat your way to the end.

I was probably about 90% of the way through that game, which got really really hard. My brothers and I all shared a game and would huddle around the little tv in our bedroom to play it. Then one day I met a kid who wanted it, so I traded it for a copy of Mortal Kombat. My brothers gave me a pretty serious beat-down. I have no regrets.

Kerri Green's held up.  The movie hasn't.

I think she is the only reason I love red heads.  That, and Christina Hendricks.

Hendricks isnt a real red head, she has a soul and dark brown hair.

I'd never seen this show but that episode was really good.  The series takes place in the 80's so there are a lot of great references.

Oh, I love The Goldbergs. Been watching since the pre-air pilot on Hulu. Keep in mind, it takes place in the generic 80s, so it's based on his memory as a kid, so the timeline is fuzzy on purpose.

It would be nice if they actually kept all the episodes online. Why the hell am I paying for Hulu+ if I can't have a full season? Luckily I've seen them all this season, but that's beside the point. There have been other shows that I became interested in late in the season and the episodes weren't all there.

I cut the cord about two weeks ago and have been using Netflix, Hulu+ and Amazon Prime.  I didn't realize until last night that Hulu+ didn't have full seasons like the other two do (at least for the shows I looked at).  I also installed the A&E app on my Xbox and it only has a number of shows available. I watched two eps of the Walhburgers last night but both would have been unavailable in a week or so.

That explains the part where the narrator mentions a very specific month and year and then says "1980-something".   ;D  Hopefully they show this in reruns over the summer.  I'd like to catch the beginning of the season.

I was a big fan of Eastbound and Down, but was really apprehensive about the fourth season.  I watched the first episode of it and, as expected, it was about him going nuts again and hurting his family in the process.  Not a storyline I find entertaining in the slightest, didn't bother with the rest of them.   :P

The story arc goes as you'd expect and he finally starts to understand his role as a father later in the season.  I've a few friends who thought Season 4 was better then Season 1.  I wouldn't say that but I'd suggest giving it a go.  There are some hilarious moments of course.

The first episode of Season 1 was one of the funniest things I had ever seen and struck a little closer to home than I should probably admit.  I think each one got progressively worse but had their moments.

I agree with that.  The middle episodes of season 3 were the worst.  I think Season 2 was better than most people think.  Season 4 was a great way to wrap up the series.

Hoopz got me turned on to Eastbound.  The episode with the mini golf (season 3 EP 1?) might be the funniest thing I've ever seen on TV.

Agreed, but be warned.  By the time you've beat the game the 8-bit version of "good enough" is permanently burned into your brain and you'll hear it for months on end.

I don't see how that could possibly work.  I mean it was a kids adventure.  How could you pull that off with adults reprising their roles?

And if they don't reprise their roles then it isn't a sequel but rather a lame spin-off aka "The Next Karate Kid" or "Home Alone 3" ect...

It would make more sense if they were the parents and it was their kids going on the adventure.

I think the Goonies version for the MSX is the best in my opnion. Played that game for many many hours. Loved it.

well that is cool too but what really got me exited is that in an interview with Richard Donner (the Original director of the Goonies) it was announced a Goonies 2 will be happen. And Steven Spielberg will write the script (like he did for the Original).

It was announced a less then a month ago on tmz: http://www.tmz.com/2014/04/19/richard-donner-goonies-sequel-steven-spielberg/

Now this might mean new computer games for this movie!
