My Pacman Shelf ...
« on: February 21, 2012, 12:08:05 pm »
Hi Everyone

I always wanted to make one of these ... and boy was that a bad idea   ...

but I have no wood working skills and no tools , then a TechShop opened near me ...

http://techshop.ws/index.html

now I had tools but no skills ...

well 6 weeks later and 17 safety and basic uses classes , software classes and workshops later ...

I was able to draw this in corel draw ...

(note this is my final edit not my original)

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee35/Jasonmm92/pacman.jpg

Its a 12in 4:1 scale model ...

I could then use my corel draw file in the laser machine to create these protypes ..
I used cardboard as i have no confidence in my math and it was ofcourse free ..
Then as I grew more confident with my file I used acrylic ..

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee35/Jasonmm92/IMG_5195.jpg
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee35/Jasonmm92/IMG_5196.jpg
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee35/Jasonmm92/IMG_5198.jpg
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee35/Jasonmm92/IMG_5197.jpg

I was then able to create import the coreldraw file into the vcarve program and scale to 4ft by 4ft and set my tool paths ...
(note this file is still currently under construction )

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee35/Jasonmm92/pacmancnc.jpg

I am going to finish this file , order my tmolding and cut the wood later this week ... to be continued ...

I appreciate your offer, but I work exclusively in SolidWorks, its a pretty simple design, doesn't look like it would take more than an hour to replicate. 8)

Update

Well I cut this out of MDF the other day and I learned a few things ... apperently the laser cutter can cut a perfect corner and the CnC machine cant ...

So the word of the day is ... FILLETS and the number of the day is 0.135

I guess it can make a perfect corner , had I created a better drawing , I am adding "Fillets" now ...

Mike, I am now using Vcarve Pro instead of CorelDraw for the Shopbot , do you use Vcarve ?

thanks Jason

NO you can't cut a perfect corner. with a CNC or any tool using a round cutting tool. this is half true, it depends on the side of the corner cut you want to perform.
external corner : Perfect
internal corner : Impossible, you will always have the radius of the cutting tool used.

just remember you cut using a rotating tool that follows the tangent of your cut. just draw a schematic of a square and try to fit the round tool  in the corner, you will see

in order to have a perfect Straight corner, you woould have to use a tool of a zero dimension (impossible) that's why laser can cut quite perfect internal corners. it's much more thinner than any other tool

It is possible with a 5 axis router and a 60 deg chamfer bit.  In fact I did one today ;)

I see what you were saying now Jason. It's really only a problem when joining two pieces of wood, usually in a pocket or locking feature. I use what some call dog bone fillets. On a 90 degree angle, the tool needs to travel its radius past the angle. Here is a good example in some parts I cut recently.

Sounds like you have it figured out. Vcarve lets you choose this type of fillet. Good luck cutting.

To clean up the corners what you really want to do is recess/shorten the shelves by about 1/2" so that they don't overhang the back pacman shape and the vertical support.  However that would mean recutting the arc side of the that was cut perfectly with a cnc router.  You will not be able to recut those curves with the same precision as the router...  Chalk it up as a learning experience and recut new shelves on the router. It should be easy enough to reprogram.  Also if you are goin to be recutting parts i'd recut the middle vertical piece as well so that the slot for the middle horizontal shelf does not go all the way through.

hey thanks , I wish I could take full credit , after 2 days of sulking , I was ready to do your plan above , but sometimes the guy at the club , working next to you , might be a professional wood worker from italy, claiming ( and I believe him cause he was hand carving a chello !! , lol ) to have made 10,000's of thousands of video poker , slot machine and video game cabs in his lifetime ...

he said "do this , do that , and becareful cause that tool is sharp" .... in broken english ofcourse ..... and they came out nicely ....

more pics to come .... painting the walll black now ...
