I was watching a commentary/playthrough on you tube earlier and the first thing that jumped out at me was how poor the jumping animation was in a game where the protagonist likes to look in mirrors so much.
I loved the jumping animation when I first saw it since it's intensionally horrible to be a parody of the jumping animations from 10+ years ago.

That just doesn't sit well with me. It seems to me that if you're going to parody aspects of gaming 10+ years ago you do it in such a way that doesn't break the cohesion of the product. You've got a well textured world with high poly-count geometry and an engine that does inter-keypoint interpolation, and then you feed it stiff animation?

Admittedly I have no played the game, only watched playthrough videos, but they all felt as though something was just not quite right. If parody was the intent, it was lost on me.

And thats exactly why I thought it was funny.  The world of Duke Nukem is already completely absurd and they make it clear that Duke is from a previous era, so it makes perfect sense to me to make an animation that you rarely see part of that joke.

Just to be clear, I don't think this is a great game that everyone will enjoy, and I can even understand why some people hate the game.  I'm just saying that I'm having a lot of fun with it.

Meh, loading screens aside, I like it.

Yea the load times are awful on 360, but it's not too terrible. I am a fan of Duke though. Still have the original installed and an action figure.  ;D

Holy ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---, I thought the EXACT same thing. Well, I played it, and as a Duke Nukem 3D fan, I HATED it.  The game itself sucks SO BADLY. If I paid 60 bucks for that damn game I would have driven to gearbox and punched everyone of those ---uvulas--- in the face. The animations for everything are super stiff, dying is the most frustrating thing ever, the graphics look terrible, duke can only carry 2 weapons at once, when you kill aliens nothing happens, no blood no gore no explosions or anything. Oh man I was SOOOO BUMMED. I cant even type everything I want to say. The animations are abysmal, even the game itself, sans the "humor" aspect of it, is just poorly executed. Technically, its a ---smurfy--- game made 5 years ago. I wasnt even expecting that much but man. Its close to unplayable if you die twice in the span of a minute. Granted, I havent played a FPS in awhile, but cmon.  :banghead:

The load times shouldnt even be like that when the graphics suck as bad as they do!  :censored:

See, I noticed him jumping, and I thought the exact same thing Cotmm said. If it was a joke, I didnt think it was funny. If they wanted to make a joke of it, they should have made him jump like spiderman or something when he is in the mirrior, just as a contrast to how it used to be. I want to find a copy of Duke 3d and play it just to get the bad taste out of my mouth.

I want to have fun with it, but I just cant.  :'(
Pictures are overrated anyway.

I didn't hate it that much. I haven't seen the jumping animation everyone keeps talking about. I will try that tonight out of curiosity. The load times do suck though..which I could have ignored if they didn't happen every time you die. It could have been better, but it is what it is.

But then again, I didn't pay anything for my copy either.

It must suck to be old and boring, dude.

Im only 28! I think the thing that pisses me off is that the gameplay is just clunky. I would accept the load times if the graphics were worth it. Oh well. Just wasted 10 bucks but no biggie.

That whole game is odd. I didnt even get past the first level. I got the shot gun, died a few times, then got so frustrated I stopped playing. The sad thing though is I feel as though Im not missing anything.

i tried the PC demo...I don't know WTF was going on, but the game was unplayable. My computer isn't super fast, but I can run just about any pc game on the market, maybe not on the highest settings all the time, but it can play a game like Crysis.

I ran the Duke Demo, started a new game and was stuck on the main loading screen for over 3 minutes. I force quitted out and started again, this time changing the video settings to lowest imaginable. Started again, the game finally loaded after about 5 minutes, of course the graphics looked like hell. The game kept slowing and freezing on me, and when I bumped up the graphics again, it was still equally as slow.  ???

Anyway, I'm not gonna bother trying to play it anymore. I had interest, but my interest was lost. I think I'll just pull out some classic duke.

Heh, sounds like your just not very good at FPS's.  I'm a few hours in and have only died once, and that was because I didn't realize I was out of ammo when I tried to shoot the exploding barrel flying at me.

Of course I'm also playing it on the PC where FPS's are meant to be played :)  Also, the load times are pretty quick on the PC.

Yeah, its been awhile. But still, I thought I could have got back into the groove if I WANTED to play more. Not even the dying screen, but the regular loading screens suck. And its just lacklust imo. Like the part where the kid is in the back alley and you autograph his book? It just seemed out of place. And the "hordes of chicks" screaming at duke outside? Only 1 moved and the voices were all the same girl. I dont know, I just wish it was more polished.

I agree, FPS's are meant to be played on the ol PC. Im just tired of having to upgrade em. Thats why I like consoles, pop it in and play.  ;D

I had a little trouble with the first turret part until I got the hang of it.  The bosses tend to kill me until I locate the power item that's inevitably laying around.

Just keep the iphone on your lap for those loading screens.  No biggie.

I suppose. The pron on there does load pretty fast since I have a router.

I've only played through the first few levels and it just brings back a lot of memories.  I'm enjoying it, but it's nothing spectacular, nor it is the biggest failure known to man as most of the reviews would lead you to believe.  I didn't expect a tier 1 shooter, just a little romp through yesteryear and it seems to be that game.  The loading times are curious, though.  I wonder if they made them intentionally long as part of the gag.
I'm stopping play on this until I can pick it up at a decent discount somewhere, just not for $50.  More like about $20.

Unlikely since they're quite short on the PC version.  How long are they on the consoles?

I'm playing the PC version, but it's not exactly kosher so I don't know if the load times are quicker with a retail version.  I couldn't find a demo and I won't buy anything without trying it after being burned too many times.  That's why I uninstalled it and will buy it when I see the right price.  But the load times between levels or even if you die and restart at the latest checkpoint is something like just under two minutes.  Not horrible, just much longer than I'm used to nowadays.  Get to see a lot of hints during that time, tho.

About 90 seconds on a PS3 with game on the HD.

That is pretty long for being installed on the HD.  Just timed a few loads on my comp and its 15-20 seconds to load a level the first time, and 5-10 seconds reloading after a death.
