NEW TRON LEGACY TRAILER!!!
« on: March 08, 2010, 11:48:59 pm »
So I had to take my fiance to see Alice in Wonderland 3D which was whatever but it was totally worth going just to see the new Tron Legacy Trailer in 3D!!!  As soon as the trailer opened up and the camera was panning sideways in front of a building that said Flynns I immediately shouted YEAAA already knowing what I was about to witness.  Looks awesome in 3D with all the cg elements.  The score is being done by Daft Punk I believe, supposed to be sort of dark/electronic.  EPIC!!!
Check it out here in HD

I saw it... don't care for it.  Even though the effects were really cheesy in the original, you got the feeling that these characters were "digital." In this one it just looks like people in overly-fashionable body suits.  Also I don't get why they are now black body suits.  It's kinda like making pac man purple or something.  Also there's a Tron machine?????  Contrary to popular belief there was NEVER a tron machine in tron because tron was a security program.  What was in the tron-looking machine in the movie was space paranoids.

I'm still hoping this will be good, but the more I see, the less I like.  The ONLY saving grace is the fact that they got the original cast back.  Of course having the star wars kid as the new lead actor might ruin that as well.  It's what I call the "Shia in Indiana Jones" effect.

Speaking of new trailers, there's a new Iron Man 2 trailer out.  A lot of the footage is what we've already seen, but there's some really cool new stuff.

Yeh I'm probably hyping it up more than it really is but what can I say.. I own the Tron action figures, comic books, soundtrack..  I'm just really happy that they decided to make a sequel instead of a reboot..  I'm so sick of reboots nowadays.

As for the Tron machine in this movie..  who knows.  In the trailer the kid is told his dad disappeared 20 years ago..  maybe it's leaving it up to the viewer to imagine his dad built that tron cab.. haha idk.. I'm just giving it the benefit of the doubt

And Shia isn't what really ruined the India Jones movie for me.. what did it in was the unnecessary use of cg..  they had cg monkeys, cg trees, cg grass.. everything was freakin cg that didn't need to be!!  But yes, I can't agree more, enough labeouf.

This is another one I could really pass on.  The first Iron Man movie wasn't bad by any means... it was just a little generic.  Very forgettable.
I think they are trying to attempt to make the franchise more interesting by adding in Micky as the villain, but to me it looks like Mick's greatest foe is gravity as he still looks like an old drunk.  Also it looks like the main battle of the film might be against robots.  Yawn.  Of cousre RDJ always has a good performance in anything he appears in, so it'll be watchable... I'm just not holding my breath until it's release.  With that being said, the suits look cool.  ;)

I agree, sequels are better than reboots.  I think the new star trek movie, for example, would have been WAAAY better if they had just did a proper prequel instead of following some stupidly contrived plot just so that the film could still be considered "cannon".  Everybody knows all you need to time travel in the Star Trek universe is A warp vessel, the earth's Sun, and somebody really smart to do the calculations.  You know somebody like the only person ever to successfully do it TWICE, none other than Spock Prime himself!  So the plot of that film was dead in the water from scene one, but I'm rambling.

I'm sure the Tron machine will be explained in the plot, but the thing that worries me, is working it into the plot is just bad writing added in to serve the fanboys.  That's a sign of a bad film, unfortuantely.

Shia didn't ruin the film for me either, it was several factors, but putting an inexperienced, unremarkable, actor opposite of teh great Harrison Ford and setting him up as the "Co Star" jsut because he's currently very popular makes the whole thing seem like a cheap cash-in.  He's not very talented to be involved in such a great franchise.  It's just distracting as well.  As for the cgi... it don't think it was an over-use, but rather poorly implemented cgi that make the film seem sub-par.  When cg is done properly you can't tell it's cg unless you REALLY know what you are looking at.  In the case of crystal skull, the cg was so bad it border-lined on the cartoonish.

Possible Spoiler (Doesn't give away anything really just explains some history between first and second movie):
.
.
.
.

Select text to see.

The story takes place approximately 27 years after the original. The movie starts in 1989. Kevin Flynn has created some of the world's top selling games based on his Game Grid challenges in the first film, and has marketed the hell out of what he saw there (action figures, Recognizer night lights, etc). As a result, ENCOM has become the world's largest video game company. Flynn gets married and has a son, named Sam, but he is widowed in 1985 and later that year, retires from ENCOM to create "a digital frontier that will reshape the human condition". In 1989, Flynn disappears and he leaves behind Sam when he disappears. Flynn was in charge of ENCOM when he disappeared, so ENCOM is taken over be his friend Alan Bradley.

Found some director commentary on this trailer: http://www.mtv.com/photos/images-from-the-new-tron-legacy-trailer/1633471/4476515/photo.jhtml

It gives some basic plot spoilers. Some interesting ideas. I'm hoping this doesn't make Flynn the antagonist of the movie.

I'm sure the Tron machine will be explained in the plot, but the thing that worries me, is working it into the plot is just bad writing added in to serve the fanboys.  That's a sign of a bad film, unfortuantely.

Incidentally, the commentary explains the Tron arcade machine in a very rational way: Flynn made a new game after coming back to the real world, and it went on to be a big seller. Wouldn't be the first arcade game to steal concepts from earlier games.  ;)

I'm OK with the TRON cab showing up in the trailer. Vanguard's pseudo-spoiler is what I expected the logic to be.

What bothers me a little bit is the physics logic apparent in the trailer. It was evident in the previous trailer (TR2N? WTF were they thinking?) as well. To me, the original TRON physics made sense. It's a digital world attempting to emulate the real world of the programmers. It was imperfect (limits on processing power) and there were still fun things that contradicted RW physics.

In the trailer, I saw a lot of motorcycle, car, etc scenes that closely emulated their RW counterparts, right down to smoking tires. Yet I saw almost nothing that showed off the unrestricted physics of a digital world (with exception of the Recognizers). You would think, after XX number of years, the world of TRON would be filled with things that emulate their RW counterparts and things that flaunt those physics and go the extra mile for the imaginative. I think the writer of Ender's Game probably said it best (referring to Zero G). Why restrict yourself to a traditional up/down orientation when you have any effective orientation you choose?

The other thing is, the computer/network topology that inspired TRON in the first place really doesn't exist any more. In the days of TRON, giant mainframes with dummy terminals were the norm. So the idea of a, "One Mainframe to rule them all, One Mainframe to find them, One Mainframe to bring them all and in the darkness bind them," kind of made sense. Mainframes still exist, but they've long been eclipsed by fully independent clients. Hell, I wouldn't doubt a good percentage of the clients out there are equally, or even more powerful, than the servers they're connecting to. Geez, how many of us have full blown networks at home that exceed the raw processing power of any company server? Point being, a central mainframe that was the central focus of the original just isn't applicable. I'm curious how the producers intend to reflect the changes in modern computing/networking and whether they'll do it accurately.

Well, if this server's been running unassisted since 1989 (good uptime!), it's probably both almost as slow as the original Tron mainframe, and probably not connected to the net. So stuff like that may or may not come up.

I gota say, it looks a 1000x better than the first trailer I had seen.

Still, it pains me to think about how it will unfold.  Id love to be pleasantly surprised...but I feel like its going to be a disappointment.

Looks very serious and dark, which can make things interesting... But, the
original Tron was far from that.  It was a fun romp.

The original was also quite groundbreaking in the thoughts behind the concepts
of such a world.   Yet, is there anything new being added here besides better
visuals and non-restricted cycles?

I didnt like the distorted drums and explosions at all.
From the initial preview, I dont get a good vibe about the 'kid'.

As said, its probably way better they chose not to remake it.  So, I guess
we shall have to see how it pans out.  If anything... At least it will be in 3d.

That makes two of us

I just think that's awesome how they incorporated the whole 20 years passing for both the movie storyline and the viewers since the first tron.  I think I heard somewhere that Kill Bill is also doing something like this.. waiting for the little girl to grow up, the one who watched her mom get killed in the kitchen.. idk can't really remember too much about that movie.. but yeh I'm glad that they decided to change up the suits to black and put in a new car vehicle and give them new haircuts or whatever everyones already nitpicking at, because I'm sure a majority of the fans would be pissed off if they decided to film the second movie with everything exactly the SAME

I'm really pumped for this one.  I'm not going to watch the new trailer to stay spoiler free, but I did see the original when it leaked from Comic-con a few years ago.  I couldn't imagine a better direction to take from the orignal Tron.  A darker, more malevolant world?  Yes please.  An aged Flynn that's been corrupted with power and is now an echo of Dillenger, the first movie's villain?  Cool.  Kick ass soundtrack by Daft Punk?  Perfect for the type of movie I'm hoping this is going to be.

Then again, I'm a bit of a Tron fanboy, so what do I know.

As for the 3D crap, I wish the entertainment industry would shake loose of this fad.  To me, it just looks bad, and all it does is give them a reason to inflate ticket prices.

I think 3D is here to stay, for better or worse.  There's just too much support behind for it to fail.  And it legitimately adds to the experience in some movies.  Coraline and How to Train Your Dragon were awesome in 3D.  But christ . . . I know what you mean about inflated ticket prices.  I took my daughter to see the matinee this morning.  They apparently don't discount the 3D films.  It was $38 for my wife and daughter and me!!!  $13 per for adults, $12 for the kid.  So much for saving money by going early.

That's exactly what happened to my wife and I when we went to see a matinée of Alice In Wonderland. Cost us almost 40 bucks to get in the door.

I've said this on other boards, but I don't think I've said it here before: I enjoy 3-D movies when done right, but as a whole, I don't think that the industry is quite "there" yet collectively when it comes to pulling off a 3-D film. Alice was no doubt a trip of a movie, but the 3-D effects seemed a bit off, a whole lot blurry, and a tad headache inducing. Overall, the entire effect seemed to take on an appearance of 2-D images in a 3-D space - kind of like a magic eye poster. When I saw Beowulf in 3-D, OTOH, it was an enjoyable experience from reel to reel. I guess it depends on the source material, but I don't want to pay 40.00 to take a gamble on what might be a good 3-D film.

Mainframes still exist, but they've long been eclipsed by fully independent clients. Hell, I wouldn't doubt a good percentage of the clients out there are equally, or even more powerful, than the servers they're connecting to.

More and more companies work with thin clients nowadays. Having to install software in a 100-500 and larger PC infrastructure is way more expensive than a decent server and thin client setup. Other variants include citrix type virtualisation of desktops.
So in a way, Tron has been gone during the 90ies but is back definitely.

I'm at Disney World with the family for Spring Break.   Disney painted up one of the Monorails with a Tron theme.   My kids dubbed it the Tronorail.

The otherside of the tronorail has a different paint scheme (incorporates a yellow light cycle and some fading trails).   I couldn't get a shot though.   I was scrambling for the camera everytime I saw it coming but never was able to get it out quick enough.
