Ghost n Goblins Scratch build..
« on: February 26, 2010, 12:33:38 pm »
I have been lurking around here for a while now, an finally i got my project under way.... heres how it went down...

Started to cut 2 pieces of MDF..:

Found the drawing and begun to draw the side of the cab..

For the curved corners i used a ...Passer, the Danish for it, donīt know the english word...

Cut of the top with a circular saw

And woila! one side finished...

Placed the finished side at the bottom and took the last piece of MDF and placed it on top, and used a router for the cut:

From the bottom

Yes, two finished sides.

Routed the trench for the T-Mold

Made some lists for the cab assembly

Assembling, under the lists i used glue for better support, and nailed the whole shabang together from the inside

Finished routing the speaker holes..

Final assembling

Mounting Bezel supporting lists

And, finally, finished

And with Marquee and Bezel

Modded a TV for monitor use..
First was to disassemble the TV. 20"

Marked up on a piece of 22mm plywood (for strength!)

Frame assembled

TV installed

Waiting to go in the cab!

Must admit, it very easy to work on a cab when you have a table like this:

Whooops! - to fast with the listīs that holdīs the back door, so had to cut some of it away...

TV markup...

from the other side..

And yes! - Fits like a glove!

almost finished painting..

and FINALLY, finished soldering the edge connector, and hooked it up to the PCB.
Also, thereīs some noice on the picture, but i havenīt connected the Video GND yet...

Is there a way to ajust the picture on the screen??

Edge connector...

Again, picture of the picture off center.... :'( :'( :'(

Luckily it was fairly easy for the picture adjustments..

TV Chassis number, which i googled and found the service manual.

the picture on the monitor after the adjustments

So, now the only thing stopping the project to get finished is the damn CP!!!  :'( :'( :'( :'(

The Millenium Falcon sized yellow monster is somekind of table saw, right?
And then DeWalt router? My good... You have it all.

Oh and the cabb looks killer too.  ;D

Sweet. Ghosts and Goblins is a HELLISH game! So hard it's not even funny. I managed to beat it once for the NES. Has anyone had the problem trying to play it in MAME where it doesn't let you add credits and continue after a game over?

And BTW, this might be the most amazing bit of video game playing ever. No death run of GnG for the NES in 22 minutes. If you've played this game you know how unbelievable this is.

Only problem I've had playing this in MAME is me being ducking useless at it. I love the game but no matter how much I play, things don't improve. That NES video makes me feel like  :banghead:

Certain versions in MAME have issues. One doesn't allow me to insert a credit at all. Try a different version.

Nice job. This is one of my favourite games of all time.

IMHO the mid to late eighties is the golden era of video games. Games from that time were still simple enough to retain the charm of the earliest games but sufficiently complex to provide a lot of replay value.

Awesome build!  :applaud:

Nice attention to accuracy on the layout (btw, passer=compass).  Are you working from original cabinet dimensions? (and if so, can you share them?)
The paint job looks really smooth - did you use any special equipment or process?

This is, by far, my favourite arcade game.  I spent many hours and quarters on it back around '87 and is one of the few I 'completed'.
I hope to one day do a scratch build too.(and have it come out half as nice).

Here's hoping you'll find a control panel soon.

Don't know if this will be of any use, but these guys appear to have a repro cp overlay.

And i have the CPO, but thanks for the link.

Got joystick and buttons hooked up yesterday, and it played flawless.
later yesterday i hooked up the speakers, and the sound worked 100%
but now, thereīs no sound, is started to make some scratch noises and then disappearing all together, so now thereīs only a faint "sssssss" in the speakers.... any idea why?? - have i fried a chip? (checked my soldering, and thereīs nothing wrong with it...)

Hopefully, I'm wrong, but I think you might have busted the amp on your PCB. It all depends on how you've hooked those speakers up though.

Here's some examples on how to do it along with an example of how to not do it. The amp wants to get at least 4 ohms apparently.

This is from a Swedish site, so if you can read that there's even more info here: http://cc.arkadtorget.se/speakers.html
