When someone can piece together a MAME machine online with specs 5 times nicer than that for around $300 I really hope you don't expect to get much. I just don't want you to get your hopes up...

For an item such as yours the shipping might cost as much or more than the item.

The thing is probably worth more in pieces. If all those components are on their own boards then they might come in more handy. Plus the RAM might be useful depending on what tyoe it is.

However, people are always giving me their old machines figuring I can find them good homes. I always have a couple (crappy) machines up my sleeve. I also have a printer collection and a monitor farm.

It looks like these are running in the $70 neighborhood on eBay, which is where it will probably go at some point.  I figured I'd give folks a shot here first.

I am located in SE Michigan.

I'm looking on Ebay and I'm not seeing these $70 machines he's talking about...

I think $30 or $40 is probably more appropriate.

Alan - Do you have anything useful to contribute to this thread?  So far you've mentioned that you can get a much nicer computer for $300 or so (no kidding!).  I never even put a price on this beast, so why the big worry about what you think this is worth?  You aren't even making an offer.  I'm still not sure how "make me an offer" could possibly be overpriced.  If someone is interested in making an actual offer, then we can worry about haggling over what the price is.

Paigeoliver - I'll have to look into the value a little closer before I say yes to $40.

Hoagie_one - I might be interested in a trade - what do you have in mind?

There are some people in this particular section of the board who do nothing but try and publicly talk people's prices down, while simultaneously trying to convince you that their KI boardset is worth $1200. I wish they would go away.

I also think it's the reason why many things don't get posted here for sale. In most other contexts getting your nose in on a transaction which you are not a part of is strenuously unappreciated. Personally, I think it's just a particular nasty bargaining technique. If you want to haggle with a guy, do it in private. I don't give a ratt's butt if you think he is overcharging, and neither does anyone else. The only time this is polite or acceptable is if a guy says something along the line of "I have no idea what this is worth, help me out."

An item is only worth what people are willing to pay for it.  REgardless of what someone says its worth or not, if noone wants to pay it, or if they want to pay more, so be it.

Sorry if it offends you, but I feel like I'm contributing to this thread. I'm discussing the value of the item. I can understand your annoyance considering the numbers I'm mentioning are lower than you want to hear.

My first couple posts were only to mention that you may have a hard time selling it (which is true) and that it may be worth more in pieces (to help you sell it easier and get more for it). It's not an insult to your machine.

The last couple posts were in response to you saying you can get $70 for it on Ebay. Getting $70 for that thing anywhere from an educated audience in an open market is highly unlikely unless they are desperate. Trying to drive up the price like that may be contrued as well... dirty... (Though there will be others here that likely agree with the practice in hopes that they can do the same.)

I'm just keeping things fair. All my comments were based on real Ebay numbers. Maybe some people aren't aware of the item's true value. Wouldn't want them to get cheated (whether they know it or not). Some people may say "it's their fault for not knowing better" or "if they are willing to pay it then let them". If someone KNOWS the value of an item and then bids higher then that's one thing, but if they bid higher because they are not informed that is different. If someone wants to charge me too much for an item, I hope someone else would tell me.

All I did was list the going value on Ebay. In other words, I'm simply correcting an incorrect statement in a thread. If you don't want real numbers directly discussed here then don't post real numbers. You made a comment and I responded. I never would have said $70 was high if you hadn't mentioned it. By listing what it goes for on Ebay you are making a statement of the thing's value. All I did was respond with a more accurate value. However, I would venture to guess that even you know that number was high.

Some people may dislike me for "busting a deal", but I'm not doing that. This site is here for the emanation of arcade-related information. That's all I'm doing...

(I can see another flame war starting here as soon as I click the "Post" button...)

On a totally seperate note, I can think the thing would be worth more if it were either parted out or traded for other parts. There are many arcade-related parts that fit in the same price range that people have just lying around. You may want to consider posting a list of items you might like to get in return for your PC. Don't get cheated in trading, though, because the shipping costs for that PC will be considerably higher than whatever someone else sends you (joysticks, buttons, etc) because of the size. Plus some people may be intersted in buying or trading for certain parts. Don't limit yourself by trying to sell the whole thing and not settling for parting it out.

If people avoid posting things for sale here it is probably for the fear that they will not get as much for it only because they are selling to a more educated audience that know the true value of the items for sale.

The advantage to selling here is that demand is higher in here so certain parts can fetch better prices. I plan on selling my leftovers here when I'm finished with my project.

It was my first transaction on this board. I did not consider the ramifications of discussing prices in open forums. And I never tried to sell my boardset for $1200. I wanted to trade it for another boardset of equal value. He was more interested in selling it for twice its worth. Either way, it was my transaction, and for someone who complains about people butting in you sure like to butt in...

This is about to get way off topic, though. That's what I get for responding to an already off-topic comment.

P.S. It's obvious that even though I've never done anything to you, you still don't like me. That's your opinion, I suppose. However, even you must admit that I do add value to this board. I spend very little time in this forum compared to others.

(here they come...)

First of all, it's not opinion. It's fact. Second, I'm not slamming a price. I didn't say "Oh my GOD! You gotta be CRAZY!" Check the posts. They're quite civil...

He specifically said it was worth $70 on Ebay and that is specifically wrong. We're all trusting people here, but in other circles that would be considered a "lie".

It would be like saying "well Bob Roberts is selling this part for $50" while Bob Roberts is selling it for $30.

In fact, I was trying the help the guy. My first post was to tell him not to get his hopes up cuz of the nature of the item. The second post was to recommend a way to make more money from it by parting it out. The third post was to tell him not to be dissapointed if he didn't get the $70 he might be expecting. I just wanted to make sure he wasn't getting his hopes too high.

It wasn't until paigeoliver mentioned he hadn't checked Ebay prices that i went over there to have a look. I noticed a discrepency and mentioned it. No big deal.

Nobody would be complaining if some newb or "salesman" posted a sale with their first post trying to sell an item at double value. So why would it be any different for regulars?

P.S. It is in Jungle's best interest that these conversations stop. They are interfering with his sale. I'm sure he would rather just get his money.

*Disclaimer*
This post is only to focus Peale's prior post specifically to PII 350MHz machines. People can see the prices for themselves...

Well I tried to post a link but I wasn't too successful cuz it was too big or something. In any case. You can follow Peale's link and then enter "350" in the search to focus down to just PII 350's. That will give you an idea of their price range without having to view the other PII's.

Note: For basis of price comparison I would only consider those items which are actually being bid on since the others, though they are listed, are (probably) too high to be bid on.

Keep in mind the prices listed on auctions can change the second before the auction ends. After the auction ends, it should no longer show up on the search list.

The description/titled can also influence the final price among other things. Such as standing behind your product.
I don't see where he stated how much he wanted for it.

Just for reference, I sold my PII-400mhz (back in March, I think) for $200. Could the buyer get a PII-400 for less? Yes. Did I rip him off? No. Could I have made more by parting it out? Probably could have made $250-$300 on ebay, but there are no guarantees.  Is he happy with the PC? Yes, because I set it up for him, helped him with all his stupid problems, and even hooked him up with MAME (now he needs a bigger hard drive). The value of the PC goes beyond the processor installed... there are hard drives, ram, video cards, tv tuner cards, and those sweet little mods to the case.

If you get PCs free all the time, great. So do my friends and family... they get the ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- I can't or won't sell. When you are someone else starts posting messages offering to give PCs away for free, than I think we can finally stop debating the value of used PCs.

If anyone cares, I finally sold my Toshiba Libretto 50CT (pentium 75) for $149. About $100 less than I wanted. Good for the buyer... at least until UPS and customs charged him another $120 in tariffs and handling charges.

There is a differnce between saying what you believe the value of a product is, and attempting to be the price police. IMHO, that machine is worth 50$, if you have an actual use for it. A p2 350 isn't a bad machine. Despite common belief, machines don't get slower, we just get more impatient and waist more process on worthless crap. Don't slap XP on the thing and load up KI.
RAINE will run every game flawless on it.

I don't have anything against AlanS17, but it seems like he's awfully determined to convince everyone that the machine is worthless.  Isn't it enough to simply state how much you feel it is worth and leave it at that?

I think it's worth perhaps $40 or so.

Do you guys realize that figuring using minimum wage as a salary, we have probably collectively wasted 3 times the value of this system, just discussing the value of this system.

If I was still at work we would need to schedule a 1/2 hour phone conference to discuss possible resolutions... and it would probably still run long.

Woops... did it again.

I have actually used "TheBooBooKitty" as my online name for about 3-4 years now. I only started moving towards using my real name after the movie came out where they said "Boo Boo Kitty F**k", and then people started calling me that.

My Icon is still obviously a Boo Boo Kitty.

Name came from my old cat, who was named after a Boo Boo Kitty reference on Space Ghost, which was a Laverne and Shirley reference.
