New boy.....
« on: November 24, 2009, 11:08:28 am »
Hi,

My name is Dave and I live just outside London, England.

I have joint this forum for 3 reasons:

1. Meet new like minded people
2. I played an arcade game around the year 1983/4 and wish to track down the name and background of this game....
3. I have a plan for a very different style of cabinet and game (I am sure I will need lots of help and advice from you guys)

I look forward to chatting and picking your brains :notworthy:

Dave.

Welcome!

You've come to the right place here. Step inside, pull up a chair etc etc.

You say you hail from just outside London; so do I originally. Whereabouts?

Hi Guys,

This forum is soooooo fast.....

I am a member of three UK forums (AC Cobra + Swimming + Business) but never get replies this fast :applaud:

To be really honest my memory is not being very helpful as I thought when I saw a photo of the game I would remember it a bit better but I can not say for sure which game it was.......

Tehkan world cup
Atari Football

or other......I seem to remember the controls where under the table/screen, un-like both the above games but I might be wrong as it was 25 years ago..........

Was there any other coffee table football games.....as I was sure it only had 1 roller ball on each side.....?

Thanks
Dave.

You can look at klov.com (Killer list of video games) to compare names to screen shots.

And we have a bunch of dorks here all day/night long.  We're quick like that.   ;)

They're usually called cocktail cabinets, rather than coffee table cabinets.

Damn... Coffee table sounds so much more acceptable when trying to persuade partners that its a good idea. Cocktail implies a bar, which also wouldn't fly well in my house.

I think it must have been the Tehkan world cup cocktail cabinet.

I was around 14 years old at the time and it was a great two player game.

Are there any newer versions of a football game with 2 or more player options that use the roller ball?

Nothing seems to jump out from KLOV as being from the right era AND having a ball. Are you sure about the controller?

This forum is soooooo fast.....

The time of day makes a huge difference. This place can be pretty slow in the mornings until our cousins over the pond wake up, then it can get like Kings Cross in the rush hour. It's funny tho'. Watch some of the times that people post. There's some obvious insomniacs/night shift workers on this forum.

I am 100% sure it had a roller ball for the control as it was that that made it so much fun.....

The faster you spun the ball the faster your man runs.....I used to get into a sweat playing that game......such great memories.....

Only one thing wrong with American style football on this side of the pond is that it is not Canadian style football.

So I guess it wasn't Atari anyways.

Tehkan World Cup eh.

I should add-

Look over those titles, pick out the ones that look obviously sport-related, and have a look at the KLOV list.

Can RomLister do controls AND genre?  MAWS lists 126 Sports/Soccer games.  It lists a handful of sports games that have Trackball in the keyword title (trackball versions).

Perhaps the best bet would be for you to go to maws (http://maws.mameworld.info/maws/) and enter Results = gallery; Category = Sports/Soccer.  That way, you can scroll through the games by an image of the game play.  If you see something that looks close, try looking for an image of the controls (scroll down in the game's info) or go to www.klov.com and seeing what they have for that game.

Is it possible that you played a conversion cocktail cabinet?  Could it have been a Missile command converted to Atari Football for instance?  Just a thought...   :dunno

Hummmm

I have just googled and had a look at a Missile command cocktail cabinet and I think the screen was the other way around :-\

Also because it was in 1984/5 ish... I don't think they would cut up a missile command cabinet would they :dunno

Where would be the best place to look for a Tehkan world cup cocktail cabinet for sale?

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

Operators did what they had to in order to make money. You're talking crash era, so cabs got converted all the time.

There were a lot of cocktails out there around that time.  If the original wasn't making money, it would only take a few hours to cut it up and make it something else.  I was just thinking Missile Command because it already had a trackball.  I didn't look at the cab to verify it would match your description.

Looking through different tables this table would be a likely candidate if a conversion was made......

This would also explain why I remember the roller ball being under the screen, which did make game play a little more difficult due to the lack of space around the ball.
