Have you read the MameFAQ: why so many versions of games?I think people have been asking what's the actual difference between set 1 and set 2 a lot recently. Looks like someone trying to help a little. The tron numbers look like release dates (american style MM/DD). Rev (revision version) has been in many titles for a while. Both release date and rev version help tell which is newer (and hopefully the most fixed). However, they don't say what the exact differences are; in fact most games we don't know the differences mean, just that (some of) the ROMs are different.I usually use the parent set, which usually is the latest world version. I don't know any real differences, though.
Depends what you are looking for. For example Donkey Kong has the US and JP romsets But the games play quite differently in each. In the UK we only got the JP romset (well that's the only one I ever saw in arcades pubs etc.) and it wasn't till 18+ years later that I ever knew about the different US version. And of course if DK is your game then you have to play the US romset version 1. I had to get used to a whole new game practically. US version is way harder than the JP version. (Though you rack up higher scores on the US version due to the extra screens to play through)
