Which ROM to run?
« on: March 03, 2009, 11:21:50 am »
I just updated to Mame .129

I've noticed this before but it seem like more things have been changed and I'm a little confused

Some used to be labled in sets Like:

Tron (set 1)
Tron (set 2)
ect.

now there are some weird numbers

Tron (6/23)
Tron (8/9)

I always as summed that the "sets" were different board versions, but that is just a guess
and maybe that is what those numbers are now

and then some have long titles with rev. xx xx
do you go with the latest revision?
or do just try them all and see which you think works best?

Is there anywhere that explains what all that means?

and is there a "preferred set" or "official set"?

Have you read the MameFAQ: why so many versions of games?

I think people have been asking what's the actual difference between set 1 and set 2  a lot recently.  Looks like someone trying to  help a little.  The tron numbers look like release dates (american style MM/DD).  Rev (revision version) has been in many titles for a while.  Both release date and rev version help tell which is newer (and hopefully the most fixed).  However, they don't say what the exact differences are; in fact most games we don't know the differences mean, just that (some of) the ROMs are different.

I usually use the parent set, which usually is the latest world version.  I don't know any real differences, though.

On many games that were made in Japan the difficulty will be significantly easier on the Japanese version compared to the US version, and the world version will be just impossible.

Try out the different versions of Super Street Fighter II if yo don't believe me.
