Upgrading motherboard with old drive
« on: November 01, 2009, 10:25:19 pm »
Just got a new 1 terabyte drive to run my Windows and all my mame. Well I got my hands on a new motherboard/cpu. Can I just plug hard drive to new board and it will boot up? They are both same brand Asus.

If its Win98, Win95, WinMe then you can just boot right off and it will install any needed drivers.
If its WinXp+, since its the same MOBO and hopefully same Video Card, it might just work. If not WinXp will give you the Blue Screen of Death.

Just try it out, it won't hurt you at all. Worse come to worst, intall the OS then you put back MAME stuff.

The Best setup for this sort ofthing.
Create a Partition for just MAME stuff (Drive D:)
Install OS on Partition C: so when you need to upgrade your hardware, you can always wipe C: to install a fresh OS leaving all the stuff on Drive D:

if it doesn't boot, hit the F8 key when it says 'loading windows' and choose safe mode. go to the device manager and remove drivers for stuff you dont have in the current setup. dont worry about removing too much, it will reinstall upon boot.
then when its booted up, install all the drivers from the CD that came with the mobo
