Insert Coin 09-U.K arcade video expo
« on: January 30, 2009, 05:58:15 pm »

Insert Coin 2009 – this year’s brand new arcade game expo - 18-19th July!

Welcome to the best spam thread ever: this is going to be the biggest and greatest gaming event of the year!

It’s with great pleasure that I can now officially announce Insert Coin 2009, a dedicated arcade gaming expo taking place over the weekend of July 18th-19th in Northampton, UK.

This is your chance to help re-kindle true social gaming by meeting fellow hobbyists, butting heads in competition, and sampling hundreds of exciting titles new and old from developers such as:
Sega
Namco
Cave
Psikyo
Raizing
SNK
Capcom
...to name but a few. And among the games featured - and free to play - will be:

Arcana Heart
Death Smiles
Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu
Night Slashers
R-Type Leo
Street Fighter 4

...and over a hundred more!

The show will be all access, featuring dedicated machines, classic cabs, mame and new candy cabinets from Japan. You only pay for your ticket, and after that all games are totally free.
There are a number of competitions being held over the weekend catering to all tastes with plenty of  tournaments and prizes to win, and a raffle in which two lucky winners will be receiving either an Egret 2 arcade cabinet or a Namco Cyberlead 2 (TBC).

In addition, Insert Coin will feature tech talks around arcade hardware and cabinets from the experts, and PCB’s and a number of other wares will be on sale at the various stands around the venue. Save your pennies, you might find a bargain!

We’re looking forward to having visitors from all over Europe and beyond, and it would be fantastic to see members of Byoac forum in attendance so we can put names to faces.

All you need to do to check out the full line-up of games and find out the details of exactly what’s going on, is pop over to the Insert Coin 2009 website, now open for registration and questions. Just click the banner below:

Help us make the first Insert Coin expo one to remember!

I can't tell you how important it is for everyone to support this event.
We are also looking for people to come and show off their cabs and anyone doing so will get free entry, and of course an excellent opportunity,if you so wish, to sell on any cabs.
Any commercial sellers can buy a pitch as their sales base at £100 per 6ft x 6ft,this offer is only valid up to the first 15 sold, after the price will increase to £150-This is an incentive to get sellers in early. An added bonus is that any seller can place as many cabs as they like on the show floor with their publicity if they buy a pitch.
This event will be annual if we can the first year successful,we have an opportunity to bring arcade gaming to the fore after so many years of mismanagement by operators and the arrogance of the major manufacturers.
We need to introduce a whole new generation of gamers to arcade or we face being a bunch of sad old timers
We expect to have some input from some of the big U.K manufacturers and distributors, discussions are in an advanced stage but I will not post any info until its done and dusted
We want this show to be as big as the ATEI arcade side was in previous years,we can do this but only with everyone's support.
As always I am happy to answer any questions anyone has so please pm me if you have any
regards
Grant

Excellent!

The only recent show which has come close would be CGE-UK in Croydon. This ran for a couple or years but folded. Thankfully it did not fold because of lack of attendance, it was down to poor management and cost control.

The CGE shows were very popular, which makes me wonder if its worth increasing the scope, how about taking in classic console gaming as well?

If the show is about "real" coin-op, how does Mame fit in though? Its always a rather uneasy fit for coin-op shows. I can see some of the big names might be willing to lend machines which would be cool but would need to think about whether they are comfortable being alongside Mame cabs. Hopefully not an issue.

Idea: Contact Iain Lee off the telly to open the show. He's a big arcade fan and he supports a charity (cant remember which one) and might do it for a donation.

Maybe Olympia next year!

I've already talked with Grant about this one Andy; obviously MAME is a tetchy subject that is bound to get a few frowns. As you know, we build cabinets entirely with PC hardware so tread that thin line as inevitably they are used as every member of this forum does as an emulation cabinet. Consequently I will likely not be bringing anything to the show that shows much more than a running demo; with us being the only vendor (so far, as I'm told) of hand-built cabinets of non-authentic origin, the focus will inevitably be on us as the 'evil twin' of arcade builders!

That said, I hope a few members stop by to say hello and talk games and ask questions with me as like I've said before, I'm primarily an enthusiast over a businessman!

Oh, and if anyone is looking to place an order on the day, they will receive a £50-£100 discount on our regular prices, depeding on their order.

Probably as long as the cabinets dont have coin slots it should not cause any problems. The big guys are likely only concerned if they see cabs being aimed at the coin-op market which is theirs of course. Likely not bothered about the hobbyist market.

Hi all

Interesting reading ,But as you just said this will not affect them in anyway ,This show is to fill the gap between the two sides of arcade gaming  and Mame is more than welcome at this show as it was at every Atei event for the last few years even pinball was mamed at Atei 3 years ago with the ultra pin ,
Rest assured no one will be complaining whats on offer as I'm not trying to target arcade buyers ,This show will be for the forgotten peeps who like games not £20,000 Sims

Sounds interesting, but where is the main focus ? I think it's the new(er) games ? How about dedicated classics ? If there's a number of restorers showing their machines I'd be very tempted to come over for the weekend. I might even be able to bring a machine along...

Mmmm, Harwich-Northampton, two hours and fifteen minutes driving....not bad !

the  focus is arcade video whatever genre, most will be candy cabs but with forum input we will have a good mix of mame and classic
we have many dedicated coming from both collectors and distributors, there will a mix of old and new
we hope to see many refurbished cabs at the show,if people like yourself bring cabs then that will increase the diversity
we are very interested in people bringing the old classics

Well, I shouldn't be so nit-picking anyway, I think this is a fabulous initiative !!! :D

I'm reserving the weekend in the agenda but there might be one thing more important happening that could stop me from visiting.

Any bed & breakfasts/hotels in the area that you can recommend ? Would be good info to add to the site. Maybe a "package" deal can be made ?

Just some ideas/suggestions of course. I just copied the info to the Benelux arcade forum www.gameroom.eu

http://www.gameroom.be/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=3846

Hope you don't mind ?

Bwah, give me the adress and TomTom will do the rest.... :D

So, who's bringing cabs ?  I have only two options really, Joust or Missile Command cabaret because those are small enough to still be able to take a fellow arcade fan from the Benelux on-board......if there are any takers....

Good idea about the red rose, now we know who to avoid  :P :P

I would be interested to visit.

My only concern is for legal roms to be in MAME cabs.

I might bring my Sub-Mini Dragon's Lair (should be finished by then).
If I had only one wish, it would be for three more wishes.

Guys,

I was thinking it might be a good idea to identify ourselves at the expo. So, I decided that I might design a BYOAC badge at the weekend. How many would like to have a badge to wear at the event?

The design will have a blank space where your can write or add a text box over it to put on your BYOAC user name so that we can identify each other. It would just be an electronic file that you can print yourself.

Sound good or am I just being anal?

Best of luck with this Grant. Will have to see if I can pony up the dough to head over from Dublin to the expo, sounds like it will be great fun.

Why is it that events like this always take place a looong way from where I live? I'd love to come, but I'm afraid I will still be as broke in July as I am now, and unfortunately it's not cheap to get to Northampton from Southern Germany....  :(

I'm sorry but I'm not going to make it to Insert Coin.

The one thing that I already mentioned happened: my wife's summer holiday is fixed around the weekend Inser Coin is. Unless I can convince her that now is the best time to have holiday in the UK (currency-rate wise) this year, I'm not going to make it.

To compensate a bit,I will be visiting the "Arcadebarn" meet near Exeter in Devon on june 13 & 14.

I would just like to inform everyone that we have a new website now which we think is a little more professional and less cluttered

http://insertcoin-09.com/news/

we have changed a few things,I was due to hold some tech seminars but I have decided to run a tech help desk instead as I felt this would be more imformative and I can answer specific questions and demonstrate one on one repair tips/fault finding etc

we are running some cool comps and will have a few surprizes

How many Entry Tickets does a trade stand give you? Obviously having a trade stand will involve more than one person coming so I just wanted to clarify the cost. There will probably be 2 of us but maybe 3 if we are bringing cabs due the work involved loading and unloading. Also is 6 x 6 fixed, can we not get 10 x 10?

only jammaplus refuses to promote the show and that was down to an argument between a very well established member there and the organisers of the show,we thought it was sorted but the jammaplus admin got all funny about it-ego i think its called

but this had nothing to do with jammaplus and they have just closed ranks

can you name the other forums as i am not aware of anything else.

We have had someone bad mouthing the show and we are not sure why,we are putting it down to petty jealousy as they could not do what we can.
Always when you attempt do something good for the arcade community you get some moron try to knock it-we just tend to ignore it tbh

i thought it already was in coinslot??I will check with kwp

Anyone know why a couple of the popular boards are no longer having anything to do with it and why it is not mentioned in coinslot magazine.  :dunno

Just to prove it was you need to go to there arcs to find the paper

Here is my interview with coinslot

1) First up - what is Insert Coin all about?
The Insert Coin 2009 Expo is a public exhibition covering all things to do with the arcade and amusement culture. Promoting the retro and modern video amusement scene including pinball and a lot of the merchandising and spares that support the culture. The event will comprise manufacturers exhibiting their latest machines, side-by-side video amusement enthusiasts with the best of refurbished classic retro machines all on free-play.

A totally unique experience for fans of gaming, representing an excellent opportunity for tournament competition based on certain games. Over nine of which will be held during the event, with prizes up for grabs. This event will be covered by a gaggle of online and public media representing a true celebration of the innovation of amusement and its continued hold on a growing audience.

2) What prompted you to set up this event?
As was seen by the crowds that prowled the ATEI show floor last month, there is a serious Non-Trade interest in the amusement sector – but outlets for this interest are proving difficult for some to find. The event will offer a chance not only for players to try-out the latest and greatest titles, but will offer the growing ‘ProSumer’ scene a chance to own new and classic game machines.

The term ‘ProSumer’ refers to those individuals that know what they want and are prepared to pay to own it – from the latest home entertainment technology to the most realistic gaming experience. The consumer scene has seen an explosion in video amusement sales into the consumer sector – a throw back of a sector of society interested in the latest home entertainment (emulating the American style recreation room). Not all of these are footballers, but includes a wide stratum of interested parties, with the resources to enjoy their hobby.

Though normally missed by the trade; the social network element of the internet is crammed with classic gaming (Retro) online forums, and with sites dedicated to the interest of the latest amusement pieces. For many their interest has to be a vicarious pursuit as there are no machines in their area. Especially as the trade exhibitions strengthen their Non-Trade registration, an outlet was needed to both promote that amusement is still of interest as the ‘pure’ representation of gaming, and also gather likeminded individuals together in a social environment.

3) Why Northampton and why July?
The aspects of cost, accessibility and capacity all needed to be considered. The organizers are a group of arcade fans, and amusement facility operators – and have taken into consideration the locality of the core audience to a unique event of this type. Remembering that this is the first time that an experience of this kind has been attempted, the organizers wanted to ensure that the event is a success from the start – with hopes that in the future it can grow as a event and brand.

I just want to add that too often we all are London-centric in our thinking – forgetting that the Counties and North of the Country also have a part to play. I hope that once we can gauge the interest in the UK audience for this style of event we can look towards other locations across the Country.

Regarding July – we have to remember this is a public event – though for the amusement trade, many will be working on their seasonal business or on holidays. This is a perfect time for a public amusement event; held during the anticipated audience’s holiday plans. The current trend towards ‘StayCation’ (taking holiday’s closer to home) will also play part in this events impact.

4) Is there any way members of the industry can help?
Oh Yes! The event is not a consumer games exhibition with a few hobby arcade games – this is a major event that covers the full gambit of amusement from the classics to the modern releases. We want to have as much representation from the amusement trade – a chance to show the machines to “the people who pay our wages”, and promote an industry to a diverse audience.

KWP was approached a month ago to undertake a marketing and development role for the event, once the core team of organizers decided to go ahead. There are known in this sector through the publishing of there e-newsletter The Stinger Report. And have gained a following with both international trade, but also the playing public. We have already started the shows marketing effort, and approached the first group of trade companies to solicit their interest to be involved. The feeling is ‘the more the merrier’ – anyone who wants to know what is available please email kevin on kwp@thestingerreport.com

The event will be split into three components – the first being the exhibition of machines on free-play; the second will be stands with merchants selling related material; and finally an evening VIP event, on the first day, to unwind and act as a social gathering for the older audience and trade. There are a wide variety of sponsorship, advertising and marketing opportunities to the show, along with directly exhibiting.

5) What do you anticipate being more popular: the video games or the pinball? Which is your particular favourite?
Oh the eternal question! Even though from a trade perspective pinball is a shadow of its former self, it is still a phenomenally popular gamer genera. I would not be surprised if the pinball aspect of the event is equally as popular as the video amusement – though for share numbers of systems, the videos will have it.

One of the unique aspects of the event will be the competitions taking place. The tournament element of Insert Coin 2009 Expo will be taking place alongside the general attendance. A highly anticipated chance for World Record competition, offering a unique audience opportunity with some great prizes up for grabs.

On a personal note, my favourite classic titles tastes include a chance for a game of ‘BattleZone’ and ‘Lunar Lander’ – but to be frank I look forward to getting my hands on ‘Street Fighter IV’ in its original state – the popularity of this game will only grow now that a suite of machines has been confirmed for the event.

END

hi im mat from leicestershire, just joined the forum and would like to say hi to you all, hopefully i will be attending insert coin 2009, for both days and im thinking about bringing along 2 machines, the first my beloved 1986 sega space harrier deluxe simulator (98% restored), and hopefully if i can get it to run properly (and space allowing!) our 1987 sega afterburner 2 deluxe (un restored) you will have to pay a £1 to play these machines, (insert coins permission being granted of course) however the profit will be going to charity!, im sure everybody who attends will play space harrier because i doubt you will find one in such lovely condition in the uk.

please give your support to this event!, these guys are passionate about our hobby, and an event like this will do wonders for our cause!

cheers matt

Print tickets got me in OK.

Not bad... although I had expected more vendors.  Were there more rooms that I missed?

Good: Lots of machines on free play, a few interesting vendors; contests looked like lots of fun, and brilliant to see this going on.  Cosplay folks looked like they were having fun too.

Things to maybe work on next time:

1) Not much you can do about this, but I guess I was expecting more cab variety.  With so many of the playable games being sit-down multi-game cabs fixed to a particular game... I dunno, it felt less like an arcade and more like a casino.  I showed my wife (a non-arcade person) pictures and her reaction was the same.  Maybe not much you could do there, of course.

2) Okay, maybe just me, but it would have REALLY helped to have NAMES OF GAMES displayed on the cabs.  With so many of the cabs looking identical--and worse, with many of the "instructions" around the controls being for the wrong game--it was very difficult to tell the name of any particular game.  More than once I would play a game and think "hmm, this is interesting and I had not seen it before"--and literally be unable to tell what the name of the game was (particularly if the game was japanese with little English text!).  Even little placards with name of game, manufacturer of cab, etc would have been great.  There were some great machines there and great fun games, new and old.

3) Old Man Quibble: music seemed way too loud.  Deejays/announcers were even louder.

4 ) I found myself really wanting more information overall--on manufacturers, games, event details.  I never did figure out where/when the raffle was (there's a ticket I won't get use out of).

5) SERIOUSLY not much you could do here: Totally smelled like Stinky Gamer.

So not a rousing success, but still really cool to put on.  Seeing younger generations get excited about coin-op style cabs made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.  Good job overall and I'd love to see it bigger and better next year!

I visited the expo yesterday and have mixed feelings. It was definately good that it was running but had expected to see more vendors too.

A couple of nice mame cabs but the egret(?) machines were a little boring and had hoped to see a lot more classic cabs. Seeing people on the dog walking arcade was fun an being able to buy beer was a definate improvement on the seaside arcades I spent my time in the north-east of England as a kid!

All in all worth it and hopefully it's the start of something.  Even if Northampton wasn't the most attractive place!

i went yesterday , thought it was really good , only downsides i had were a few cabs were not in great condition , pro gear 2P stick was knackered and Garou HK button not even working ?also some of the screens had bad burn and just wasnt set up right (to dark etc etc)

I thought there should of been more organization with the competions , i entered the SF4 tourney but didnt have a clue when i was ment to be playing ? also they should of had some free SF4 cabs so people not in the comps could play on the other end of the room or something as sometimes you couldnt even get close to SF4

Totally smelled like Stinky Gamer.

This was a bad problem , come on guys your given this scene a bad name just go have a wash

all in all i loved it though and would def go again

I was hoping to play:

Altered Beast, Defender, Stargate and a few others - not a big fighter game fan ! and well.... none of them were there even though the list said they would be...odd

Very disappointed with the lack of classic cabs, the whole even was very generic and I really had to question spending a £140 (excluding food and drink) to make the trip possible.

On the positive side, there was a few gun games and quirky if not bizarre things (dog game)... quite how you play that I'll never know.

I've take loadssss of piccy's on my new camera  ;D so will upload them somewhere for you guys  :)

PS sorry if this is you or someone you know.

PS also sorry if this offends, it just wasn't what i was expecting, however i still enjoyed it.

I visited the show on Saturday.

Negatives

Ive gotta say I realy did expect more vendors. I took a big wad of cash expecting to pick up a trackball and joysticks etc. The was one stand but all he had were ball tops.

There wasnt realy the need to have the segaradio dj on fullblast. It made playing the nearby machines a pain.

It realy did smell a bit sweaty in there after a while!

Some of the machines near the dog walking machine seemed to be turning off at ramdom and switching out of free play mode. Oh they were also for sale, coincidence?

The simpsons machine was unplayable!

Positives

That dog walking machine from Japan was great!

I enjoyed the space invaders/quix machine (I think it belongs to someone on here)

It was nice to be able to get a pint and a nice pork sandwich from a proper pig roast.

The MAME world was reperesented by a company called Candy Cabs. I had a few good chats with the owner Mike who had brought 3 or 4 ( can't remember doh) of his own cabs. Great bloke who answered all my questions about trackballs!

Overall I had a great day I went on my own and found the show very friendly. I was worried there would be queues for machines but I found it easy to get on all the machines I wanted ( exept for SF4, I agree with Trevor about this issue).

Well in the end I didn't get chance to go as I wasn't going to turn up on the off-chance I could pay in on the door if I was told I couldn't. Someone else asked the question earlier this week and on another board about paying on entry and it went unanswered both on the official website and in person on the two forums so really an important question like this should have been addressed.

Originally we were intending to go and set up a trade stand but mixed and uncertain arrangements around this weekend when I was first informed of the show back in January meant I couldn't and up until this week I did not know I could even attend in person. All this week I've had problems with the ticket vendor and without knowing about payment I could not come even as a regular punter. It appears from these few comments that the organisation on the day seemed to be lacking and as a vendor this is a little bit of a concern as if I were to have had a trade stand I would also have entrusted several machines to the organisers for transport which could have been risky.

It is a little disappointing to read that the classic and MAME fans were not catered to much and it seems this was a little too focused as a sales pitch for big commercial vendors. I can appreciate though both sides of the arguement as other smaller vendors like us will have wanted to assess the 'feel' of the show and be prepared instead for a possible future show, classic cab owners would also want to ensure their prized possessions are in good hands and the 'hands-on' feel would have been better in the couple of weeks and months coming up to the show date so vendors and contributors had a little more faith in the expectations of the organisers and visitors. On the flipside I think more cabinet owners from within the resto/DIY/MAME community should have made a bit ore effort as it essentially these contributions that will make the show.

I would like to see some photos of the event to assess it and also have a bit more notice about next year's show, plus possibly a different venue. Central England would be fairer as everyone will travel the same distance to get there and the Birmingham NEC is more readily accessible and suitable for an expo event like this. I will certainly be making more effort to be a big contributor to next year's show and hopefully both the organisers and the community can show a bit more motivation in time for next year. My personal pledge is to bring at least 3 fully-playable machines in time for next year's show as well as getting some things organised for a proper trade stand.

I rather liked it but I am a bit of a fan of sit-down Asian cabinets and so the huge line of Japanese sit-downs was something else... reminded me of the top floor of large shopping malls in many Asian countries.
Mame was not well represented but that was not a surprise since the show website made it very clear it was a coin-op event and coin-op and Mame are rather uncomfortable partners! So it was "as-billed" in that respect and no surprise there.

I thought it was a good first attempt. But in order to make it more attractive in the future the scope could be widened. As I mentioned earlier in this thread the defunct "CGE UK" shows in Croydon were very well attended and that was beacuse they has a much wider brief, taking in classic consoles, Mame, and pretty much everything to do with console and arcade gaming. There seemed to be fairly sparse attendance on the Sunday when I was there.

I think there is great scope for the future, an all-encompassing Classic Arcade/Classic Console/Cosplay/Mame Cabinet/Pinball show.

We originally planned to have a stand but were unable to commit in the end to a whole weekend "away". Hopefully next time.

There did indeed not seem to be any way to pay on the door. I kind of walked through some doors and er.. found myself in the show. I guess I owe some money...

Good to chat with Mike from Candycabs and Dan from Surface Tension. Great guys who are passionate about what they are doing.

I have decided I MUST have one of these since seeing one at the show:
http://www.rs2006.co.jp/j/deltanew/index.html
Anyone know where I can get one?

Heh--funny you were there after all, Andy--I had secretly been hoping for the chance to meet you as one of the vendors!

Good point on Surface Tension, though--very slick pieces of arcade furniture, the sort of thing my wife would be willing to have in the house (well, I should say "be happy to have in the house"--she's willing to have my clunky first-draft console in the house, but I wouldn't say she shows it off to visitors... the Surface Tension tables looked quite nice).

My tuppence worth :)

Good

1. Lots of cabs and lots of games!

2. Friendly atmosphere - was really nice, no-one hogging machines.

3. Actually enjoyed the DJ - good to hear some classic game music. Yeah maybe a bit loud, but gave it a nice party atmosphere.

4. Dog walking! Which my daughter very much appreciated.

5. Cosplay - the girl dressed as the Silent Hill nurse was especially well done.

6. There was a bar. Even if I couldn't have a beer, this is essential :P

Bad

1. Very Japan centric game choices, didn't really see anything from Atari, Midway etc etc (no Star Wars, Gauntlet, Marble Madness!). I think I expected more classics.

2. I was hoping to pick up some control bits and pieces, not much in the way of joysticks, trackballs, buttons and Mame hardware (I think this was me mostly wanting to see an Ultimarc stand!)

3. Finding the place was a real headache. I went to every car park but the one at the front (and this was after following the directions!) I must have done about 5 laps of the place before I figured it out. This is with using SatNav and checking it out on Google Maps before hand. A simple 'Park by the front next to the Bingo place' would have saved me some petrol and swearing :P

4. T-shirts are all well and good, but had hoped for some memorabilia. I went down with money to burn, and ended up coming back with it. No tokens, no crazy PacMan toys. Missed opportunity! :(

5. Two players games in single player cabs (what only 1 player Bubble Symphony! Noooo....!!!!)

6. Losing at OutRun2 - which is especially shameful given I've worked on every single one of the home ports for Xbox, PS2 etc. That's just me though :P

On the whole though, I'd go again :) Though I think I'd stay locally - it's fair old run from Sheffield on the bike, especially in the rain.

I second the idea of it being more round Brum way - lot easier for us notherners to get at.

But come on - for a first stab - this was very impressive. Please take the above as constructive criticism - I think on the whole this got a lot of things right.

nice to read the feedback. i couldnt make it but it looked fun - if nothing else.

a shame to hear there weren't many people selling parts / monitors / games / cabs.

i found a load of video on youtube from it.

if i HAD made it i would have really been looking for mostly vendors, and expect them to have a few good condition classic games at each stall to play. All those white plastic cabinets look wrong to me..

this is just coming from the videos and feedback i've read here.. but i'm kinda glad i didnt go down in the end .. i hope next time there are more classics and vendors i'll be there if that's the case.

great to see a video arcade expo in the UK tho! props..  8)

Hey, where's the love for your BYOAC brother?   :(

I've upped some photos to flickr. The brand new surface tension table is in there. I took that one and the existing back gloss angled table which were both really well received and got plenty of playing.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/surface-tension/sets/72157621737878628/

The show was excellent, although not the ideal place for me to be, but it was good to be in amongst the hardcore enthusiasts and get their take on things.

Great work from Alan and Grant, doing what no-one else dared do. An excellent job for the first attempt and I sincerely hope they aren't put off pushing it again next year. They can see what worked and what didn't to make it better.

From people's comments on here...

I totally agree with the personal hygiene issues, they were unbearable at times! As far as vendors were concerned, all of them had been approached and they had either slowly dropped out, or were simply not interested. It was a real shame as this was a unique event and could have done with a little more support.

My personal highlights were the dog-walking game. Two games in a row worked up a bit of a sweat! (Yes, but I HAD deodorant on!). Outrun2 3-player link. Hollywood heroes cosplayers.

What annoyed me the most was the idiot that won the raffle for the mini Capcom cabinet on Sunday. Having bought a ticket for it, obviously knowing what the prize was, sold it on the spot, selling it for way less than Alan paid for it. He should have been shot.

Did the BYOAC name badge idea never get going? As I was unsure how many were there from the forum.

 They sold it (Capcom machine) idiot! +1 for 'having a word with him'  ;D

I really wanted to get a ticket for the cabinet raffle, but after asking a few people about where you buy them and no one really knowing, I then went to the front desk only to hear someone saying to his mate "I wondered where you'd gone, I nearly sent the IRA after you!" (also realising this person ignored me earlier when I asked a question) I just walked away deciding not to bother. (Not wishing to get into politics)

Even though it wasn't exactly what I was hoping for, yes it was a nice weekend in general and I would go again - providing more classic cabs!  :D

PS who won the cosplay thing?

I didn't see the bit about badges.

Shame you didn't come and say hello. I did meet a couple of BYOAC'ers... though so many names were piped into my ears over the weekend, I can hardly remember any of them.

It sounds like you were there on the Saturday? The mini cabinet went on Sunday. I had the same issue with raffle on Saturday and didn't get any tickets. On Sunday, the machine was out in the foyer with a big "Win me!" sign on it, so there was no ambiguity.

I'm definitely with the majority on the classic cabs issue... but I think that would be tough as they are so expensive to get your hands on here in the UK. Unless there are willing owners happy to hire them out for the weekend. I think this is where the MAME cabintes came into their own. Candy cabs and Twisted Box. Loved Adam's Twisted Box cabinets with some amazing artwork.

I'm not up on characters, but the cosplay wasn't won by the Dark Nurses (as they made their costumes) as they couldn't find the entry either. Personally I think they should have won as they also played their parts well. The only way I recognised them at the bar later was by the walking stick!

Anyway, lots to be learnt from this show for next time. No doubt Grant will be checking this thread for feedback.

I thought the venue was an excellent choice. No, it wasn't bang in the middle of England, but it was a good size and location for the first one. I also have to say that it was in no way a huge commercial pitch for big vendors. The aim was to get small parts and cabinet vendors in as well as some larger ones. In the end, there weren't many of either, which is just poor support for the arcade community as a whole. Most of the people I spoke to had MAME cabinet at home, or wanted to make or buy one. It's hard to be a fan of arcades and not want a machine of some sort in your home, so there was a captive audience. Most people were there just to play though.

Sorry to single you out Craig, but "On the flipside I think more cabinet owners from within the resto/DIY/MAME community should have made a bit more effort as it essentially these contributions that will make the show" should be left for someone else to say.

I think the cosplay was won by the guy dressed in the Racoon Police Dept uniform.

On the subject of cosplay did anyone see the guy on Saturday who had shaved his hair/grew a beard in the style of Zangief from Street Fighter?

If you are that guy you should have entered the competition I reckon you would have won hands down!

Fair enough, I wasn't there and should have been, but circumstances were what they were and I couldn't get round it. I'm just trying to put a picture together from what others have said, and my personal experience early on before the show. Your comments make more sense to me anyway as you will have viewed the show from a similar perspective as I would need to. If the reality is more like you say then it sounds ok - all I'd read so far was the perspective of visitors, who seemed mostly non-plussed by the event - particularly people there to buy rather than sell or showcase as you would primarily have been occupied with.

Oh well we'll see what happens next year and maybe I can see for myself.

i have just got home from the madness and will post here some analysis of what went right and wrong at the event

a very important point to make is that many of the people leaving negative comments are saying there was very little in the way of mame and classic cabs and very little sales stands,we recieved very little support from both those communities-the only active support we recieved was from the candy cab community.
if people want to see classic and mame cabs then we need support from those groups as i cannot pull a star wars cockpit out of my arse-we need people to bring their cabs and get involved

on friday 4pm before the show we had no show happening,2 of our containers were being held in customs at felixstowe with over 80 of the cabs and many game boards, with much hard work and help we got clearence from customs at 4.30pm-the first container turned up at 9pm and the final container arrived at 6am saturday morning.this gave us 12 hours to unload and position the cabs, install 110 v stepdowns, install game boards, game test and pat test----it got done with alot of help from some amazing people

myself and alan have learnt alot from this years show and we are going to sit and talk about next years in a few weeks, imo we need 40-50 mame and classic cabs with support from those groups specialised sellers
i had a sales stand at the show with standard spares but due to the workload i could not get it operating until saturday afternoon

we also need more on the organiser's team,in particular looking after sales and cab donators

we think we did ok for a first attempt

Yourself, Alan and your team did do a fantastic job. Nothing is going to be 100% right first time, so it's up to you how you want to push it next year... and I'm glad to hear there will be a next year.

Yeah, but you had an excuse!

Don't take our criticism too harshly; it was a great show and a rough thing for a small group to put together -- you should be very pleased!  If people didn't care, they wouldn't have said anything at all.  Fantastic job and I hope it becomes a regular event (even though I'll miss it after 2010).

Hey, thanks  :)

I didn't realise I'd sold to a BYOAC member. Maybe my lady made the sale when I was off playing Outrun 2.

In all honesty, I would have felt "naked" if I would have come and showed the Joust or Missile Command.

It looks like a Japanese arcade.

Not a single classic.

The SI/Qix doesn't count as a classic IMHO.

Grant I really appreciate your hard work and risks in this show (guess the electricity bill was more than the ticket sales alone.....)  but I think it's a bit strange to blame the classic collector community for not showing up. We all know what happened at the Jamma+ forum and that completely killed the classics scene for Insert Coin. You'll need to find a way to solve that issue to get the classics coming in.

I hope I will be able to come over next year with a cab though. It's stupid to kill an event like this from the beginning and it's even more stupid to complain there were no classics when people are simply not willing to come and bring one.

I woud love to see a "Euro" CAX-like event growing from this, and I feel this is what Grant had in mind when he started this all.

I didn't come to the event this year, but I will come to the next one. Bringing cabs is a problem with logistics. I wouldn't like to hump a full size cab from Leeds to Northampton and back, specially as I don't even have access to any kind of truck or van.

I am however currently working on a DK bartop replica. I would very much like to show that if anyone was interested in putting it on their stand. I could even let it go on a vendors stand like Ultimarc as it will have a U360 installed. Letting people try the products out on a working machine can only be good for the vendor.

i am sure most people did not believe that this show would take place but it did and we did ok
as for the accusations of lack of professionalism well all i can say is go ahead and do one yourself
being a professional in the arcade/coin op business for 25 years i accept some things were nor great but also it was a two man show organised from outside the u.k

we did bloody well imo for our first time with alot of obstacles

we need to see where to go from here but the mame and classic markets need to get involved and maybe even a part of the organising team.
