I have a legal key but I don;t have a win95 disc
« on: June 11, 2003, 04:23:58 pm »
I looked all over for my win95 disc.  I can't find it.  Any suggestions.  Is it legal to get a copy of the cd and use my key?

Situation (for those that would say DON'T USE 95!).  I have a 486 laptop.  It had 95 on it.  I tried to put my 98 on it.  For some reason 98 it getting install errors.  So I need to go back to 95 then.

As far as I know, there is no way that is completely legal other than contacting Microsoft and having them send you an OEM disk, and that may not even be possible anymore.

It shouldn't be a problem if you just download an ISO.  You still own the license which is the important part.  If you are really worried about legal issues though, you'll have to contact Microsoft's Customer Service and see what they have to say.

Hmmm, that wouldn't work in my case then to get an OEM disk.  My laptop has no CD.  It came with 95 on it in cabs.  I had to run setup.  Cabs can come from anywhere, they are no different from one disc to the next.  So I think just having the license makes it legal.  I don't have a 95 EULA in front of me though.

you should try windows 98 lite on that badboy... but you'd still need the missing 95 disk...

do you use the network to get the cabs over?

I'd like to help... but don't feel like a legally can ;)

it is my understanding that when you purchase windows XX, you are purchasing the license (the key).  You are in fact allowed legally to make a backup copy of your legally owned software. just like large companies, or like what we did in the navy,  they purchace a licence for every computer that will have the software loaded on it, they may only use one copy of the disk to installed to every computer, it is the license that you are buying. in fact if you do own a legal key to a registered copy of windows in your name microsoft has been known to furnish a replacement copy...for a fee of course. I have also known cases where they would not. Now i'm not a lawyer, and will not pretend to be, this is simply the way I understand it, but you should be able to contact microsoft directly and have them clarify it for you. They will want a key registered in your name though.

Good explanation their skirge, although i'm sure the navy uses network installs instead of just one CD they hand down from seaman to seaman... (heh!)

The only rub is that M$ no longer supports w95 at ALL anymore... it's off their roadmap or whatever...

actually...I got out of the nav almost 8 years ago, at that time our computers weren't networked on board ship, each boat bought their own stuff...so on our boat we would buy say 30 licences and have only 3 physical copies of the disks. Now intel...where I work now does it the way you have described, I don't work in IT, so I couldn't begin to describe any spacifics.

I have the 14 disk version of Win95. I think this was the First Version before FAT32 came. If you need it, I have it image with WinImage cause the Diskettes were 1.7MB and you need to use Winimage to dump it and make diskettes 1.7MB each. LMK if ya want it.

Just get an iso

Easier said than done.  Since 95 is out of the mix hardly anyone has it.

Rampy:  The error I am getting is a partition error, which is odd.

Here's how I am getting it on, I think I said I have a smal ide to large ide converter.  I just stick the drive in another computer and install.  Here's what happens.  If I install 98se on the drive from another computer and it works on that computer, I put it in the laptop and the laptop can't find an OS.  If I put the cabs on the then transfer to the laptop and try to install It says it can't find a fat32 partition (the drive is formatted with a win98se boot disk).

Don't do it that way (also, you don't want to bother with 98 on a 486, even if it supposedly will run on it).

Erase, partition and format your laptop drive.

Put it in your converter and use the CDROM to copy the cab files onto the laptop hard drive (i usually make a folder called "Cabs" which should hold everything from the setup directory on the cdrom, the exact name of which varies from version to version).

Put it back in the laptop. Boot from a startup disc.

type

C:
cd cabs
setup

Also. I am sure SOMEONE has an OSR2 Win 95 cd laying around (I know I do), that you could use to get the files from.

Your key is the license, not the disk. As long as you're using a valid key that you paid for and have the legal right to use then the install media doesn't matter.  Think of a computer manufacturer (big or small). They usually have 1 cd they install from (or master image) and use unique keys for each machine.

One problem you may encounter is finding the correct version of the install media. Keys come in OEM, retail and upgrade flavors and will usually only work on the correct version of the cd.

In the future, you may want to check out Google.  There are boot disks being distributed from several sites for Windows 95. I was havng a similar problem with 98, but decided to go ahead and give Google a spin (since it has helped me in every other situation).  Man do I love Google ;)

that's what I did.

pfft....it's Microsoft.  Pirate XP if you want to.  Take some time to read the findings of fact from the antitrust trial (none of which were disputed by the appeals court).

Don't go out of your way to make sure you don't do anything that could undermine Microsoft's ability to compete.  When MS sees a potential competitor they don't take the tack of competing based on product quality; they set their sites on that competitor to put it out of business.  And where do they point their crosshairs?  Innovation every time.  Every time there is significant innovation made by another company that company is stomped out by MS.  Netscape - destroyed.  Java - not gone yet, but MS is doing their best (promting a $1 billion lawsuit by SUN).  Macintosh - All but destroyed.  The list goes on.

Try this on for size.  Years ago, when the Apple/Mac platform stood on a much closer to equal footing in the marketplace with the PC Microsoft came up with a brilliant business model.  Any computer retailer that wanted to put a Microsoft OS on any computer it sold had to pay Microsoft a royalty for EVERY computer it sold.  Yes, indeed.  That means that unless a computer store wanted to sell ONLY Apple/Macintosh computers (and go out of business) it had to pay Microsoft a royalty for every Apple computer sold.  As a retailer that made it unprofitable to sell Apple computers.  The same goes for OS2, Dr. DOS, etc.  Not only is this immoral, but blatently illegal.  It is also not an exception.  It is VERY VERY VERY typical of the tactics Microsoft has always used and still uses to this day.

If you want to pretend that the world is black and white and treat Microsoft with respect when, as a consumer, they treat you with contempt go right ahead.   Due to the destructive practices they have used for the last thirty years you really have no viable option besides using MS operating systems.  That doesn't mean you have to help them retain their stranglehold on this industry and consequently on innovation, consumer choice, etc.  That's like saying, well the Nazi's made it to the top and became the ruling party.  It doesn't matter what they did to get there or what they're doing now, they are the leaders so we've got to just go along with what they say (please don't take this comparison at face value...it is to illustrate a concept, not a direct comparison of Bill Gates to Adolf Hitler.  Yes, Nazi's were/are far worse than Microsoft).

Note to admins....before you censor or delete this please remember that I am not offering any illegal software or even suggesting how illegal software can be obtained.  This is only an opinion that, as posted, should present no legal ramifications for this board.

Nice novel shmokes.  Anyway, when you get sued by m$ lets see you say not treat them with repect.  plus I have been running linux on my secondary machine for over 6 years :)

Key word is secondary.  You still don't have an alternative to a MS Operating System.

And what are they going to do...sue me for $199 in damages for having a non-licensed copy of Windows XP?

No, they're not going to do anything.  The more home users they have for their Operating Systems, (legal or otherwise) the more licenses they're going to sell to corporate customers because it's all that the employees know.

<<< BTW I once got ratted out when I stole a beta CD of Windows 98 from a "former friend" and MS told the guy they didn't care.   Pissed off the beta tester, but I was sweatin' bullets until I heard the verdict.  WOO!>>>

Key word is secondary.  You still don't have an alternative to a MS Operating System.
It was my primary OS for a semester in college.  Only reason it isn't primary now is my programming career is VB.
Actually, I am debating for my next computer.  I might get a G4.  OS X is damn cool.

One of my favorite tricks for M$ keys is to use all 0's

(on a lot of older disks)
This is an old developer trick that was never taken out. It will work on your W95 disk.
