Hey, Donkey Kong enthusiasts
« on: August 14, 2008, 12:05:44 am »
Whereas those in the Masters thread are apparently hardcore students of the game, this thread is for those who enjoy playing it rather casually. Sort of like the difference between Crochet and Polo.

So, what do some of you like about the game? What are some sort of cute things you've noticed in it?

So, what do some of you like about the game? ?

When I play it now I don't die in 20 seconds :)

I like that it reminds me of my childhood.

I like the game play. Something about this game makes me want to play it.

If it wasn't for Donkey Kong, I'd never have bought a ladder. Thanks Miyamoto!

I liked it enough to go back to it regularly even now, though my roots really lie in the post-golden era, more like late-eighties/early nineties, where simple gameplay still existed but the graphics got prettier.

For anyone who liked Donkey Kong, I highly recommend Donkey Kong '94 on the Gameboy. It had the similar challenge of timing and jump dependancy, but had the added bonus of a slight puzzle element and more fluidity of Mario's movement. Plays great on a cab too...

It has different screens with different goals for completion.

Hey, Lutus - what are you doing posting in here when he explicitly excluded those of us "hardcore students of the game"? ;)

Well, since I'm already starting a post, I might as well answer the original question. ;D To be honest since I fell in love with the game 25+ years ago I don't remember for sure why I initially liked it so much. Probably what Lutus said though. One thing I like about it now is that there are patterns that will sometimes work, or at least make completion easier, but there is no pattern that will ALWAYS work. Makes it more challenging, even for us "hardcore students of the game".

I have always liked the game, but sucked at it so I never tried to get better.  After seeing TKOK, now what intrigues me is that I'll NEVER be as good as Steve Wiebe, but I sure can try!  I really enjoy just challenging myself to try and beat my own high score.  There is a lot of randomness in this game that makes me curse Donkey Kong's name all too often!

YEAH, HEY MAN. Anyways, that thread turned into a sporting event so I thought I'd try something else. Like I said there, I didn't really like the game when it came out. I didn't get it, though I probly would've if I'd watched more people. Since finding mame, I've gone from, 'oh, well let's try it out', to 'yeah this is fun' to...I play it every night almost. Sometimes more than once.

Certainly I need a better stick. It not working right and me jumping straight up instead of to either side, depending on the circumstance, costs me lives. Something I always wondered about was whether one could do back to back jumps. Recently, I found out one could, at least twice, but until last night, I wasn't sure if it just required timing that was possible by mortals or if only a succession of taps would hit the right point, or if even just it required multiple taps due to how the game timing runs - especially in connection with other events: barrels in proximity, coming off the top of a ladder, etc.

Jumping in succession works MUCH better on flat surfaces (pie level, rivet level, elevator) but when on the slanted girders it can prove to be troublesome.  I started out with the "Track and Field" button pressing method, but over time you will get used to the amount of time you must pause before jumping again.  Practice is the word I guess.

What, you gonna give up on Shinobi without even posting one score?

I think I've got the timing down, as long as I'm moving. I can't do it standing still.

I just asked if others had scores to post.

Are you just playing referee?

No, I just haven't been playing the game - HEHEH - I've been busy playing others.

Also, I found out how to jump repeatedly from a stand-still. Not a sure thing, the timing is crucial, but did get up to five or six in a row, once.
