1.5" screen on your controller?
« on: May 08, 2008, 10:23:55 am »
This seems like it might be cool for some project.

http://sellout.woot.com/Default.aspx?WootSaleId=5559&ts=1210254373&sig=9e1b9e8edc942a62

uses usb for both power and transfers, so you could keep it plugged in (I think).

But at 1.5" what could it be used for?  maybe show the snapshot of the game running?  Maybe a custom icon of the controls that are used?

I always thought a frontend which captured some keys from mame, but never had a gui, would be cool.  IE, you turn it on, and it launches the last game... hit a few keys (for frontend only) to select a new game in the second screen....  Hit a launch key and it kills the current game (or sends an exit key) and then launches the new game.

seems like it would be cool.  Especially if you have autosavestate turned on.

Saw something similar at walgreens for the same price. I looked at it and thought "It would be nice if someone could hack these for a better use than just showing low res photos."

If its meant only for low res photos then I doubt it has the processing power to show any animation, if that's what you're thinking of using it for.

But it would be cool if it was completely software controlled so you can put it on your CP and it gives you information on the game your playing or show what controls to use or simply show the title of the game. Something usefull.  8)

you can have it automatically rotate through the pictures... you could replace all the pictures per game?  for the animation?

I'm not sure, code aside, what you could do at 128x128 that would be useful though...

I got it! Place one of these next to each button on your control panel, and based on which game is selected, have a batch file copy an image down to the device which displays the function of that particular button.

Yeah, only $210 ($15 x 14 buttons average) plus shipping to get started! I'm sure there's nothing better to spend money on!

The Optimus Maximus keyboard...  $1600 with a little screen for each button.  I tell ya, it really would be tough to make out all the porn I would put on there...

I was being facetious. Not only would it be expensive (as you point out), it would be hideous aesthetically. However, there never seems to be a shortage of people with too much money and not enough design sense, so I'm sure someone will end up trying this eventually.

Oh, but of course. Any time something shouldn't be done, there's always someone asking, "Why not?"

Why not? :P

(that was a joke btw... although a screen with instructions when you load up an emulator would be cool)

Soon they'll have consumer priced display films that you could lay under your cp and it'll display whatever you program the app that works with it to do.
