Control Configuration Database
« on: March 03, 2008, 05:45:10 pm »
I was thinking it would be useful to see what settings others were using in mame for various controls.  For example, the TT(2 / Hi-Low) in Tempest, or XXX Trackball in Crystal Castles (perhaps also mentioning the optical encoder used?).  This is all analog stuff, I guess - doesn't have to be, just not sure what else one would tweak (optical guns?).  It might be helpful to list the speed/sensitivity settings, etc.

I'm sure the first response will be a forum/wiki link, if thats the case, apologies up front.

This is motivated by the pain of trying to find the perfect settings for my TT Hi-Low with Tempest, avoiding backspin but still being responsive....  I just love the spinner, but finding the right settings is a pain - and maybe someone out there knows a good, more arcade authentic, setting.  It would be nice to have a database for all game/control(/encoder?) combinations.

I hereby second this... especially since I have nothing useful to contribute to this thread, but I feel as if it could turn into a wealth of information for many people including myself when the time comes.

Thanks - guess I'll start then (going on memory)....

Game: Tempest
Device: TT2 hi/low, using included optical encoder
Mame version: I forget  :-[, but around 116

Dial Digital Speed: 20 (default)
Dial Autocenter Speed: 20 (default)
Dial Sensitivity: 50% (still get a bit of backspin though)

If anyone has better settings, or a real Tempest to compare with.....

I was about to start a thread on this very subject, since I'm interested in what other people's analog settings are for the various spinner/trackball/analog games. Any chance that maybe we can get this stickied?

Here's my contribution:

Game: Tempest
Device: TT2 connected to Optipac
Mame Version: .130
Dial Sensitivity: 6% (Poll rate adjusted to 500 Hz in XP)
Feels arcade perfect.

I'd love to see other people's settings for games like Centipede, Golden Tee, Marble Madness, etc.

If someone has already adjusted all of the values in all of the games, and would upload their cfg files, I could make this an option in CFG Magician. It would be possible to click on a button, and have all of the analog information added to your existing cfg files. I would need to know what controls (IE Turbo Twist 2) that the settings are intended for.

I could also turn "reverse" on or off for all games. If anyone would find that useful.

An alternative to having someone upload their cfg files, would be if anyone knew How many spokes each original game had on their spinner, and the math required to convert to a control. (IE Turbo Twist 2)

Here's some more settings from my machine:

Spinner: TT2 connected to Optipac, poll rate=500 Hz (XP)
Mame: .130

Arkanoid/Revenge of Doh - Sensitivity=41%
Blasteroids - Sensitivity=6%
Cameltry - Sensitivity=41%
Dark Planet - Sensitivity=5%
Kick/Kickman - Sensitivity=1%
Omega Race - Sensitivity=5%
Pole Position/Pole Position II - Sensitivity=9%
Road Blasters - Sensitivity=13%
Tron - Sensitivity=11%
Super Speed Race - Sensitivity=5%
Tac/Scan/Star Trek/Zektor - Sensitivity=5%
720 - Sensitivity=6%

I'd love to see other people's settings for trackball games, especially those with 3" Happ trackballs connected to Optipac's.

this is a great idea, i've been wondering why this isn't out there already. mind you, i think the best way to go is to give some kind of reference in the game itself that you can work off. i think it was in the wiki about turn counts that it mentioned that a full revolution of the spinner in the original tempest moved you 6 sectors on the first screen. it's pretty easy to calibrate after that. if we had this kind of info from the originals i reckon it'd be a lot easier to config.

Just wanted to say this is exactly what I was looking for recently having gotten my TT2!  Thanks Todd for posting your settings... And I second the request for trackball settings as I have an Ultimarc U-TRAC on the way!

Doing a search led me to this post which has a good bit of information too:

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=23967.msg201068#msg201068

This post has references from the original games as well.  I also noticed in another post I found that Randy mentioned that Arkanoid 2 needs about twice as much as the first.

With a TT2 it should be set right around 40% (486/1200=40.5)  DOH wants to be set at twice this.

The "feel" will be a little different based on knob diameter as well, compared to the original knob size.  A smaller knob than the original may feel more accurate if you lower the sensitivity, while a larger one will feel more accurate if it's a little higher. But the numbers above are good starting points.

That old thread is fantastic as it gives the original analog measurements in enough detail to tweak MAME...would be nice to have this for more games...
