Ripping music from CD to mp3 files

Is there a tool out there which will simply read the music CD I have inserted into my harddrive CDRom drive and then create a MP3 file for each song on there? 

I am looking for something very easy to do this ......

If you are using WinXP, Im pretty sure Windows Media Player 11 can be set to do this.

goto tools->options
click "Rip Music" tab
check the Rip CD when inserted

A lot of people use EAC + The Lame codec to get high quality rips, plus it gets the CD info via freedb and can tag your  mp3 as well........

Itunes.
Just make sure you setup go into preferences-> advanced-> importing to set up the ripping the way you want. I.e MP3 quality and so on.

I have no idea what iTunes is  .....

I have Windows Media Player on my computer and when I rip the songs they get stored as .WMA files and not .MP3 files.   Is there a way to convert WMA to MP3 easily?

You should be able to tell WMP to convert to mp3 instead of wma. It's in the options/preferences somewhere.

A quick note:  For older versions of Windows Media Player (prior to ver 11)

I downloaded and installed a plug-in by Cyberlink that will add the MP3 dropdown in the options menu in WMP.  It was only $9.95 and works great!

Ha... I've been there done that. 

The only other thing I should note is make sure you know WHERE they are being ripped.
(I did that one too, couldn't find the music once it finished ripping)

FYI iTunes is apples music player but it works on pc too.

I have found with recent dvd-r drives little need for eac - I had to re-rip some stuff recently and even on burst mode in EAC I was getting the same CRC as when I ripped the same thing 4 or 5 years ago (dont ask about the need for re-ripping)

There's no need to use that specific version if you want, and quite frankly, the info on the exact version to use might be outdated by now, but it'd be nice if it doesn't work with other versions of EAC if folks would say something so we could UPDATE a STICKY! 

Better yet, why wouldn't someone ELSE do a write-up on OTHER ways to do this?  I'm not EVER using WMP or iTunes, either for ripping OR playing, because I prefer to use my music in the manner I choose, and Windows AND Apple have both chosen to DRM the music I PAID FOR as their default.

Seriously, someone do a writeup on how to get NON-DRM files using iTunes or WMP.  Otherwise, you are all doing people a disservice by giving simple drive-by advice on programs WITHOUT including that one little piece of advice on disabling that "feature"

Itunes doesnt drm what you rip, and wmp doesnt either - there was a tickbox you had to change back in the 7 or 8 days to get it to do no drm, I dont know if that setting has just carried across the upgrades or if the new ones just dont do it at all since my userprofile has moved between all my installations of windows

I've Ripped hundreds of CDs with it and it's GREAT and from the reviews I read, it's one of THE best. (in fact, I'm ripping 2 CDs on 2 PCs with it right now.

The write-up in that link still works for current versions of EAC, but the recommended version of lame is very out of date.

'Best' version is 3.97 now, it superceeds the old 3.90.. dibroms/tweaked versions. This may require a change to the compression settings that are entered into EAC, not sure.

Yeah.... after 3.90 they changed the standard for LAME's flags from something like "--alt-preset standard" to "--preset standard" or "-V2". The new system is better but the old documentation still floats around making things confusing sometimes.

Personally I've used EAC since 1999 or so but I only use it to rip. For some reason I trigger an encode with LAME via CDEX. I guess I'm just slow to change what's already working for me.

I'd really like to switch to Ogg Vorbis but it smacks of effort.
