Playing Top fire and Trigger fire games without actual sticks?
« on: November 19, 2007, 03:56:13 pm »
Hi,

I am about to ask a stupid question, I don't know but it has been in my mind for a while now so I'll get it off my chest.

Is it possible to play topfire and triggerfire games without the actual joysticks but using  standard joysticks and buttons. I mean could you use a button on the control panel in place of the top fire or trigger fire button?

I know it is not authentic, but will the games still be playable? Does anyone play their games like this?

I cannot spend a lot of money and time on on various joysticks and building frankenpanels so I am happy to sacrifice a bit of authenticity as long as the games are playable

Thanks

Yes, a "pushbutton" is simply a "pushbutton" so it would not matter whether the pushbutton is on top of a joystick or simply on a control panel.  For games like Zaxxon (which had a trigger button on it's joystick), you could easily play the game using a normal joystick with a pushbutton from your control panel instead.   However, games which require the player to move a joystick, turn a spinner knob and push a button at the same time (ie: Discs of Tron) would be unplayable so you would have to get a joystick with a top button (or trigger button) unless you have three arms  :P

Also, any game which required the used of two joysticks at the same time while needing the player to push a button (ie: fire bullets, etc..) would be unplayable as well.

Not sure how many games out there fit this criteria, but I think I answered your question

Thanks for answering my question Unclet,

Yeah I know some games will not be playable, I was asking about Normal 2, 4 and 8 way games with a topfire or triggerfire button. You mentioned zaxxon another great game which comes to mind is Gorf, but I don't  know how many others there are.

I have yet to build my panel and do have a couple of wico's but I was thinking of getting an ultimarc U360 as it seems to be a great all in one stick and could be used

The first game I thought of was Battlezone.
You could maybe get by with strategic button placement (similar to Defender), but I wouldn't want to unless necessary.

I plug in a usb Logitech joystick when I need  a topfire...
not a bad investment, got it for $3 on clearance at a Target
store awhile back.
