I'm making a documentary on BYOACers
« on: November 15, 2007, 09:27:14 pm »
Hi all

I'm planning on making a documentary on the BYOAC community and why we do what we do.

The way I see it, if someone is prepared to spend the cost of a PS3 or more, in order to play 25 year old arcade games, not the latest and greatest graphics, then there is a story in that.

I want to meet some fellow BYOACers, to interview them about their hobby, how they got into it, film them showing off their cabs etc

I'm based in Sydney, Australia so looking to start by interviewing those that are local and then moving outwards, maybe do a roadtrip this coming Christmas holidays to get around to other cities.

If you are interested in being a part of it, please respond or send me a PM with contact details.

There are heaps of awesome scratch builds around, and I remember one Galaga / Galaxian restore from Melbourne or Brisbane that turned out fantastic.

Cheers,
Anubis.

I'm game. Of course I live in AZ, so might not be much help.
My old user name was marlborroman13, but I kicked the habit many years ago!

Well,  you could also do  Messenger Interviews  using Mic and Cam...
and or do  Youtube style  Question vids,  and people can upload
answer vids.

That's a great idea.  I just started making videos of my cab with MALA frontend in action to post on Youtube.

Cost of a PS3!?

Pfft, I've spent three times that by now. My table saw alone was $500. The drill I bought was $300, $200 for the router. Not to mention sand paper, orbital sander, shop vacuum, router bits, drill bits, small pieces of wood, multimeter, clamps, bondo, wood glue, paint, rulers, jigsaw, angle rulers, a canopy for the backyard, entension cords, hole saw, hinges, circular saw, saw blades, paint brushes, shop rags etc.

And lets not forget that I must have spent at least $700 on the arcade parts and I don't even have everything yet.  :dizzy:

Worst part is that I have yet to even start the cab.

I'd be willing to point the camera at myself and jabber away. I can post the resultant huge file on some webspace for you to download. I'm not sure you can use footage of angry tirades against emo music, gimmicky arcade games, and overpriced greedy cab sellers, but I'll see what I can do  ;D

Nevermind, you don't need a noob like me with one stripped cab, a .119 set, and one shoddy control panel  :)

I could tell from experience how easy it is to start the project, but how difficult it is to finish it.....

I am a member, same name as here but I am in NZ, not AZ or OZ.

Hats off to anyone who can turn the obvious drive to play these games on a cab into a full blown documentary.   If you find yourself heading to the great white north, you've got quite a few people to look up....

Good luck!
