Congo Bongo and Qbert and Restrictor plates
« on: August 24, 2007, 11:05:15 pm »
From what I understand from a fan that has a dedicated Qbert there were no restrictor plates on the original arcade.

Is the same true for the sequal Qberts Cubes....and what abut Congo Bongo??

Anyone that can chime in with some kind of proof would be a great help.

I am a completist and it is a tough decision for me.   I do like the restrictor plates though and if authentic they will stay.    If not then it will come down to a U360 replacement.

Right, but my question was whether they had restrictor plates or not.   In other words to restrict the up/down/left/right as opposed to pacman/mspacman/donkey kong etc. that restrics the diagonals.

The joystick functions exactly the same as the 4-way in any other game, except that it is turned 45 degrees.
It has the same diamond shaped restrictor as the others.
In use it feels like a square, as you run the stick through it's range of motion, because it's turned.

You can achieve the same feel with a square restricted 8-way.
You just need to set Up=Up AND Right, Left=Up AND Left, etc...
That keeps the stick from registering movement until you are all the way into the diagonal.

I do understand the concept.  And that is what I have in my panel.

I am just bumping because I want to know for sure if the original Qbert/Congo Bongo/Qberts Cubes had a restrictor in it.

It would seem quite logical that they would...but you never know.

Sorry to bother you guys more.

I know they use restrictor plates at the super speedways, cause they go too fast. As for congo bongo and qbert, I don't think that they have a carborator or whatever the restrictor plate goes on in them, they may, but I HIGHLY doubt it.

I guess that would be yes.   I am adament about it, because someone with a dedicated Qbert cabinet on the other thread said it didn't have one.

So you have seen all 3 machines and know this for a fact?

I figured it was quite possible that at least Qbert didn't have one since it isn't like Congo Bongo where you are pushing in a constant direction...rather you are doing quick "jumps" instead.

It doesnt have a "restrictor plate". They just use 4-way joysticks, which come with built-in diamond shape holes that restrict the stick.
NO MORE!!

Thanks for all the info guys.   So that would be a yes(in that it restricts)...so the Qbert stick is staying exactly the way it is...and no 49 Way.

I am sure Sinistar is a great game, but no way it is going to upstage Qbert.  ;D
