I was driving down the road the other day and someone was having a yard sale. On the edge of the yard was, no kidding, a donkey kong in a DKjr. cabinet. I couldn't believe it. This kind of stuff never happens to me. I never see arcade games on the curb, let alone a donkey kong.

I parked, took a look at it. Had a WICO stick in it, the CP was in bad shape, but the bezel and marquee were nice. The inside showed the original DK blue color and it looked pretty clean inside. It works. I asked the lady how much she wanted and I was hoping to hear some ridiculously low number but she says "$300".

Yeah, it's a fair price, but I don't really need it. It would've taken a great price for me to pick it up, since I have other projects lined up right now. I was hoping it was someone who just wanted it hauled off type thing.

Ah well... my first arcade machine sitting on the corner is still sitting there. I'll check next weekend to see if it's still there.

Did you try to offer $100?  A stack of twenties talks loudly at a yard sale.  They'd have to haul that sucker back into the house if it didn't sell.

Did you ask who managed to break the original sticks?

the worst thing is they put a sign on it "FREE" when 9-10PM, for they don't want to haul it back in and out the next morning

I didn't want to insult her. She sounded very confident with that price, and it didn't take much to talk me out of it since I'm rebuilding a donkey kong right now. And if I said $100, she would've wanted to hit the middle at $200.

I wasn't really looking for a fair price - I was looking for someone wanting to throw out an old arcade and slip them a small amount of cash and everyone walks away feeling like a winner.

No biggie - nothing lost.

Eh, I don't really consider making an offer like that an insult, so long as you're not a dick in the process.  Leave a little card with your phone number on it and tell her you'll be back with $100 cash and a truck if she calls.  And I'm with you on the not wanting to insult part, I usually don't haggle too far, mostly because I either want the game or not at the price asked.  I'm not much of a deal chaser.  Can't tell you how many times I went back at the end of a day on a game like that still sitting there to be told "it is already sold but we only got $75 for it, the guy will be here soon to take it away".

You're probably smart, though, not to pick up another project.  I have way too many and barely ever get to progress on any of them.

We'll be having a community yard sale in a few weeks and I plan on setting at least one cabinet outside with a ludicrously high asking price to see if I can find a sucke...I mean buyer. Mainly though it will be out there so I can play it. Gotta fund projects somehow you know.

The most I was really willing to pay was $100, and it didn't take much for me to walk away from the potential project.
