Desert Island Rom
« on: May 23, 2007, 12:06:09 am »
We've been doing a lot of Top 100 lists and such lately, just wondering if instead, we discuss what ONE game you can't live without?

For me it's Marvel Super Heroes... no matter what MAME version I'm running (and as I've been tweaking my cab I've installed several different versions and reinstalled OSes etc. several times)... this is the one game I always load on first.  Can't say why other than it rocks for us comic book buffs.  Unlimited quarters has never been so much fun!

MSH is probably my favourite fighter. There's just something so perfect about the moves and combos, and all the characters are a blast to play. It's complex enough to keep you interested, but doesn't burden you with the crazy amount of options found in later fighters.

Beyond that, I always try to keep the Metal Slug games on hand. Maybe a couple of beat-em-ups as well like AvP or Final Fight. And if I'm in the mood, perhaps a shmup or two... maybe Dodonpachi.

Even though I like alot of the 80's games (pacman,Ms.Pac,Jr.Pac,Galaga,Galaxian,Space Invaders etc....) I somehow always launch Asteriods. Maybe its the only game that I rolled over the score and the only game that I set the hi-score to the max  (999990) before rolling it over to zero and start over.

I seem to have a little trouble with my system and running Asteroids
at full speed... seems like it always runs a little slow.  I'm using
Mame 0.53b on a PII 300MHZ system, 512MB ram, 32 MB video card
with all the default ini's more-or-less...

Asteroids Deluxe seems like it works ok at full speed.
MSH works ok at what I would call full speed.

Any ideas?

Tough question. I never really played Robotron in the 80's but I've been playing it every time I fire up my cab lately. I'll go with that.

ok lets put it this way,

Marvel Vs Capcom!! countless money on that damned thing!! almost lost me my diploma!!

Captain America and Wolverine ahhh what a game!

but when its ever emulated

it will definatly be Street Fighter III - 3rd Strike,

im a real sucker for fighting games and this one to me is the ultimate fighting game

just a shame it came around the declining death of Arcade! (specially here in Australia)

What's the deal with SF3 games not being emulated yet anyways? It's not like they're the most technically sophisticated games out there.

well the original problem i belive was the actual cpu's or something
but what ive read somewhere is they may of cracked it,
but are waiting for the game to die in Arcades (which ones are left)
coz it is still a very popular game,
ive heard wispers as well theres a private release which works
which couldnt be discounted i guess.
so from 2001 when ppl said
it wont be emulated till god knows when
i think god knows when isnt to far away really
anythings possible

Arcade: Elevator Action, Ghosts'n'Goblins, Galaga, Time Pilot, Moon Patrol

Only one?  Then I think it would have to be Galaga.  In fact, I had a conversation with a friend about this very topic on the weekend.  I can't believe that no one has mentioned this game yet.

Current high score about 268,000

Thanks!  Finally got a chance to test this.  22500 works like a charm.
Is there any drawback to this on other games? (vs 44100?)

Street Fighter Alpha 3 would probably have to be my pick. SFA2 is actually my favorite Street Fighter game due to both the fabulous art and tight execution of the fighting system. I was originally a bit bothered by all the options 3 gave you. Giving the player a million options to pick from always makes me feel like the developers didn't take the time to figure out what actually worked best in the game. OTOH, in SFA3 that might work in it's favor as you can play it like SFA2 or even Street Fighter II. There's 25 characters and lots of depth there. And unlike a game with set levels, fighting games are a bit different every time you play.
Brevity is not my strong suit.

I think I'd take Joust.  Great game for a single player, and great for two players as well.  Co-Op or Competitive play available with two players, good difficulty ramp-up, good graphics & sound, and just plain fun.  Joust always winds up being a favorite when new people come over.

Try it with a dance pad, it brings a whole new dimension to it...

When my free Kraft dance pad came in, I mapped over the left/right to the dance pad and the flight button to a hand-held gamepad button.  Gameplay was tough but pretty cool.

Tried it.  Made Pacman almost impossible.

Also tried Track and Field --- now that was interesting...
mapped the "run" button over to two different dancepad
buttons so that I could run in place to make the little dude
run.  It actually worked but he gets a slow start (maybe
it's me?)
