Patching Holes in metal CP
« on: January 17, 2007, 01:53:33 am »
OK...so I have a couple holes that I would like to fill in a metal CP.  The problem is that the new holes I want to drill will partly fall in to the current "hole".

What material should I use to patch the hole?  Should I try to drill my new holes first or could I patch...let dry...then drill new holes?

There is perhaps some way to "patch" metal. But I don't know of any. If I where in your position, I would simply start over with a new metal CP. You can try bondo but its not really suited to fill holes that will be taking a beating.

Only other thing i can think of is to weld it. But that's excessive.

If it were me . I would use a piece of sheet metal under the CP
solder it in, or jb weld.
fill with bondo. let it harden. and drill. I find bondo is plenty stong.

I have never had luck drilling into a hole. drill bit jumps into the other hole and makes a ugly mess.

unless you plan on running a car over your CP . I think Bondo is stong enough

There are a number of ways to patch metal, so normally there is no need to "start again with a new panel".  :dizzy:

Standard technique (as seen in the Restoration section of the wiki) shown here:

http://girasoli.org/?p=104#more-104

BUT, having the hole overlap is the determining issue. As daywane point out, bits jump when trying to drill into a hole. Now, if you don't mind the extra panel depth, just patch as per Tony's tutorial above and drill new ... likely not a big deal for your project.

Cheers

How big of a hole is it?

If it's a button hole and it only overlaps by 1/2 inch or so you should be fine.

Something you could do is take a patch of metal and have it braized in to cover the old hole, then use bondo to flush it up. You'll never know it was there.

I had the exact same issue with holes in metal.  I cut a 1x2" rectangle when what I really needed was a 1/2" diameter hole, don't ask me how I screwed that up.  Anyways, I took a piece of wood and clamped it underneath the hole and then took some bondo and filled in the spot so that it filled the area plus a little extra.  After it dried I sanded it down, but it turned out that my spreading job wasn't that great and the other side (where the wood was clamped) turned out to have a smoother finish.  So I flipped it over, sanded it smooth and then using the drill press, I made my 1/2" hole right into the new patch.  I haven't had a single problem with the patch being weak.  The key is to making the existing hole kind of rough.  Take a metal file and rough up all the edges, the bondo will stick better that way.  And when you're using the bondo, do it in a WELL ventilated area.  I did it outside and it still stunk horribly.  Good luck!

What I did on my centipede was get another piece of metal to go over the whole top surface and it had a bend at the top to wrap around the edge.

I cut all my new holes in this and didn't concern myself with the crap underneath.   I got the new piece of metal welded to the original panel and bondo'd the bottom edge so that the curve was smooth.

(If you need pics, I might be able to dig them up when I get home tonight)
