Need coin mechs, but don't know which ones
« on: October 07, 2006, 10:20:37 pm »
So I've got a Mortal Kombat which is installed in a Konami Simpsons 4-player cabinet. I'm getting it cleaned up & working, and I just noticed today that there are no coin mechs.

It's got two Coin Controls over/under doors. Manufacture date is 5/19/91, according to the sticker on the inside of the coin door. I've done some searching on the forums, and I'm not sure which mech will work - do I need a Coin Controls mech, or will any mech do?  ???

standard coin mechs will work fine, just make sure you buy them for what you are going to use in them, quarters or the correct size tokens

Actually, Coin Controls doors need Coin Controls coin mechs (a.k.a. coin chutes). If you use any other brand of coin chute in this door you will have problems with some coins falling out the entry 'trough' and completely bypassing the coin mech! Genuine Coin Controls coin mechs have an extended "shovel" at the top to prevent coins from falling out.

You know, that may be the problem with my MAME cab. I've got a Coin Controls door in there, and the operator I got it from installed two mechs before I picked it up, and I'll have a quarter land on top of the coin box every now and then instead of dropping in the slot like it's supposed to.

Maybe I need six instead of four. :)

Where *can* you get Coin Controls mechs these days?

EDIT: Anyone have a picture of a Coin Controls mech so I can compare with what I have in my MAME cab?

Here is a picture of a plastic front Coin Controls coin chute (mech). Notice how the top left 'shovel' extends above the rest of the mech.

Coin Controls, Ardac, and Coin Acceptors (Coinco) were all bought out by Money Controls several years ago. They (Money Controls) promptly discontinued the amusement coin accpeptors/coin door divisions of these companies. In the case of dollar bill changer manufacturer Ardac, they closed them completely thus eliminating all competition.

At one time, Wells-Gardner (the monitor manufacturer) was distributing Coin Controls coin mechs and doors. You might contact Wells-Gardner to see if they have anything left. Happ Controls now distributes some reproduction Coin Controls parts, but there's not much available.

By the way, in my opinion Coin Controls products are garbage.

I have more of that exact coin mech Ken talks about. If thats what is needed for the type of coin door you have, I still have some available. This are mechs with lip/shovel are for just the right type of coin door, and I only have that accepts .25 cents US.
LMK if interested.
