war of the worlds sample 'workaround'
« on: September 09, 2006, 06:33:56 am »

i read somewhere that you can rename the star castle samples to WOTW or something and so use those as the sound on war of the worlds. apparently because wotw used the same hardware and the prototype was based on star castle and its sounds- or summink! anyway, i still dont have sound for wotw. anyone tried this?

I haven't tried that one specifically, and I'm NOT a Mame guru by no means. But I have renamed samples before that were incorrectly named as for what the game was actually "looking" for and it has worked fine.

So assuming that War of the Worlds is actually "looking" for a specifcally named sample, then it should work by renaming a copy of the Star Castle sample to what it's looking for.

I think you have to actually modify the MAME source code for WOTW to tell it to use the StarCas Samples.  However, I think M.A.S.H. posted about this in the pre-0.5x time frame.  I wonder why it hasn't been added yet.

hmm, it sounded so much simpler when i read it. this is the quote (from atari age):

Only problem is the lack of sound samples, but I just renamed the Star Castle sample set WOTWC.zip (I think that's the name) and use that. I did that because I unzipped the Star Castle set and noticed that all the sample names matched the ones in WOTW. Sounds pretty good to me and heck, for all I know, the sounds ARE the same, as WOTW was a conversion kit for SC.

i just look at it quickly and STARCAS and WOTWC samples are the same

samples cfire.wav
shield.wav
star.wav
thrust.wav
drone.wav
lexplode.wav
sexplode.wav
pfire.wav

so copying STARCAS.ZIP sample to WOTW.ZIP will work. No need to change MAME source to tell WOTWC to use STARCAS sample, unless WOWTC samples are not added to read the samples. Chances are it is added and they are looking for the samples so they gather it and call it WOWTC.ZIP with all those filename above.

Mame is looking for the samples, as ClrMame is listing them as missing.  It will actually play any short *.wav file you want, as all it is just a sound file.  It's just like you can modify Windows to play any sounds you want.  At some point I had Simpsons theme on my computer (10 years ago or so), my friend had Star Wars one.  Basically you can customize a game with your own sound and it should play, as long as they are the same length in seconds, approximately (due to timing issues).

damn, i t looks like i was doing it right but my version of mame (78) doesnt support WOTWC, only wotw. and i bet it needs wotwc to run the sound...

MAWS lists the same samples for both so as long as 0.78 was updated to look for the samples, probably either WOTW or WOTWC will work.

Hey, that was my "discovery"!   ;)  It does work, for both WOTW and WOTWC, but you do have to have a recent enough version or mame to support the samples.  I'm using 0.96 I think.  All you have to do is rename the SC sample file WOTW.zip and/or WOTWC.zip.  Again, I have no idea if these are the real sounds, but they seem to work OK.  One of these days I will get around to making fake sets for the other vectors using wavs, probably from other games.  Some of the Sega x/y's have great sounds...

don't rename your SC sample or your SC game will have no sound. COPY SC.ZIP WOTW.ZIP

Of course, that is what I really meant to say-make a copy and rename.   :-[  Personally, I'd rather have sound in WOTW than SC, but that's just me.
