I've lost the drive - How to get it back?

Dear Abby,
Seems I've lost that spark that made me come here and post alot. I've lost the spark to finish up my MAME cab and even touch or think about my other game machines. What should I do?

Simple!

Solution 1:

Visit an arcade. You'll long for the good ol' days of real arcade games soon enough.

Solution 2:

Here's the right answers:

1.  Check your connections.  Maybe the power cord is loose.

2.  Check the drivers.  It's almost always a bad driver.

Pack it up neatly and walk away for a while. DO NOT get rid of it for at least 6 months to a year. Do something else entirely...

You already invested the money, the stuff will be there, something will prod you back into motivation eventually.

Yes, and that something comes to you after you've given everything away.

You almost have it Jeff, but you are far to close to him. He will be thinking about it all the time. He needs to pack it up, and send it to a far away land... such as Arkansas.

On a more serious note, Ray ...I've been suffering from a similar lack of motivation recently (although I suspect that is mainly due to recently-introduced budgetary considerations). And I'm just plain lazy. As odd as it may seem, I think I'll get a motivational boost this weekend as we're hosting a memorial service (told you it seems odd) and I always feel motivated when people play the machines.

I suspect that Nostrebor's advice is best ... take some time off and at some point you'll feel the pull again. That Juno First machine is just too sweet to leave sitting for long.

Cheers.

Whoa Nellie!

Look, I don't post a whole lot but I DO KNOW that I look up to your input.  I'd say put it on the back burner and keep checking out the board.

There are a lot of works in progress that are *way* off the board as far as most of us just making a cabinet to play some games.  Check out my lame work in progress.  If you're concerned that your cab won't be up to snuff forgettaboutit.

On the other hand, if you have other stuff going on just wait for a while.  I left my stuff laying around for more than a year before I got the bug again.

And Damn, it's one heck of a bug once it bites you again.

Take a dip into another hobby. I, personally, got superobsessed with a new guitar. I then got a new guitar, novelty wore off. I came back here and finished my cab.

I'm in the same boat.  Well, kinda.  Now that I work on them for an actual job, I don't use my free time to work on the ones I have at home.

Not that I was doing a lot of work on them anyway, there's always something else going on here that demands my attention.

If you're talking about the Juno cab...well, it's almost done! I'm still on my first cab and hoping I get as close as you someday. ;)

You probably just need some encouragement and all. Try breaking down what's left to do, into smaller projects and just do a little at a time.

Look forward to seeing that awesome cab someday!  :applaud:

PS - What's going on with RetroFX Ghosts 'n Goblins? This is the first time I've seen it and it's amazing!

heh. heheh.
I think it could be the weather. And the GF. I find myself doing lawn-care and planning out building a SHED.  ::)

It's not just the Juno. It's the MAME, the PacMan cocktail, the Galaga, the Missle Command... but the big thing is the damn basement. I want all the crap down there GONE! And I want a finished basement! *sigh* (no, the "crap" isn't the arcade stuff, it's everything else in the way of my arcade stuff).

I've also been watching Lost season one. Just a little TOO into that show!  ;D

PS: Psychopanda: RetroFX GnG was a project that died in 1999/2000 but got far enough that it was fully working with near-finished art and sound for level 1. The programmer/creator of the project keeps suggesting we release it finally, as is, but then nothing happens.  :)

Don't worry about it. This stuff goes in cycles. I cycle in and out. Right now I am in the midst of a bartop cabinet project obsession. Whatever you do, don't get rid of your stuff! I did that recently and regret it. Don't worry about it. Go get other stuff done. The passion will come back.

Ah, that's too bad. It looks amazing. I'm not even a really big fan of the game but it made me want to go back and play it again. Now if only I can finish me own wee cab!  :P

Hey Ray,

Before you ditch the Dominos cab, carefully remove the PCB, pack it VERY well, put my
address on it (I'll PM you), put it on the mail and wish me luck !

Seriously: leave it alone for some time, if you over expose you'll loose interest. My interest is kept mainly because I have hardly any time to work on my machines (let alone play ;) )

To be honest: Put it upstairs and........that's it  :o
My priority list is as folows:
1) Work
2) Music
3) Main Mame cab, getting it done (still need new CP, artwork etc.)
4) Bought a cocktail a while ago which is begging for a much needed full restoration. Lot of work, but very rewarding. When it is done. If it gets done. Oh, and gotta mame it too of course !
5) Dominos
6) Family (OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHH !!!! I AM BAD !!!!  :laugh2:)

So It's pretty low on my list  :D
But hey, this cab is from 1976. It's only 9 years younger than me. It can wait one or two more ;)

ARG?
I have not read Bad Twin. I'm tempted... but I keep reminding myself that stuff like that was created purposely to make money. They can make up whatever they want as they go along, so I'm not gonna get caught up that deep.

I've been wasting time on forums reading and posting theories as well as making fun of stupid people. :-)
