ok, I made the mistake of buying a betson imperial 3" trackball instead of happ's.  now I can't figure out how to hack it through a mouse.  does anybody know how to do this?  there is plenty of info on how to do the happs, but none on the betson.  any help would be appreciated.  also, the hagstrom and Ipac both have encoders that will handle happ's trackballs, but what about the betson?  can they do those too?

I take it you didn't get the ps/2 version of the imperial trackball?  If you still have the paperwork, I'd try to ship it back in exchange for the ps2 version, which will interface directly with your computer and act as a standard mouse.  Mine works great.
