Man...this guy just rips into some of the stuff people have made.  Some of his comments are funny though.

If you go to disorder.org you can see he's got some sort of profile called 'epthegeek', and there is a user on this board also with that name, with one post here: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=37034.msg335195#msg335195

What a nice guy, asking for help from the people he put crap on. I'm surprised I haven't seen my arcade yet, but I'm only up to page 10.

somehow page 5.html is messed up, you need to go back to 4.html and just change the 4 to 5 on your bar. Same thing when you reach 14-15.html.

I think the site is not able to deal with the traffic load. I got up to page 25 after many reloads.

I'm glad he included his own but-ugly cp.

The cab on page 19 is great IF the x-arcade cp is a temporary measure.

Talk about weak hosting. Can't handle a tiny amount of traffic from BYOAC??! Or was this Slashdotted?

By the way, yeah the guy writes with alot of venom, but daaaaamnnn, many of those cabs deserve it! I bust a gut just from the photo of "Pac-Matt". The description kept me laughing even longer.

He was diggdotted :)....

Keep reloading and you can get to the pages.

One or two of them are really...REALLY bad.  Kind of scares me into not even trying if it might turn out like them :).

(the one with the teeny tiny monitor is great, as well as the 404 error page :) )

Did you guys see this on page 23:

Quote
404 STUPID UGLY CRAP Not Found

This page is just a quick "---fudgesicle--- you" to all the dillholes that build their nice piece of crap, submit their link to BYOAC and then let the page die. Friggin' BYOAC seems to think they have like 700 projects in their examples database but it's more like 56, if you take out all the dead crap.

Please try the following:

    * Don't submit a link as an example if you don't intend to keep that ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- up in the first place. A ---smurfing--- 404 does nobody any ---gosh-darn--- good.
    * Maybe think twice about submitting a link at all. After all, chances are your MAME cabinet is crap that you shouldn't be proud of anyway.
    * I shouldn't have to click my Back button 5 out of 6 times when trying to check out 'examples'.

HTTP 404 - File not found
Internet Information Services

Technical Information

    * Technically, BYOAC is a little to blame for not cleaning up the examples links; but only partially.
No crap, don't put your kids in a real fridge.

The guy has one point though. Custom arcades with XArcades are pretty darn ugly. Wiring up the buttons, while time consuming, is one of the easiest things to do with a keyboard encoder.

Yeah, and I hope YOU'RE on there too.

Actually, he might have some issues with my Unreal Tournament artwork theme, but my controls are almost at a mandatory-only level.
I've got a modular control system, and only have ONE admin button.
(3 counting the 1-P/2-P start buttons when shifted).

He does make good comments on most of them though....

but some of his examples I first saw 5+ years ago... IE some of the first ones made.  Before people had things like arcadevga to easily use an arcade monitor (or heck trident video drivers wheren't working).  When buying a 27" monitor could really really set you back a LOT.

But aside from being mean... he usually has good points.  People should look at his site and go through the list (I got to 14 before it died here) when designing your own.

Of course... mine might be up there.  But I go feature / looks all the time.  So 3/4 of my control panels don't have vynal on them.  My volume control is white when the rest of my box is black.  I don't have sideart yet (havent' decided if I'm going to rebuild my old gauntlet cab... getting sick of the old wood and rounded corners that wheren't there originally... and I don't want to buy side art if I'm going to rebuild.

But even if mine could make his list... I still love it.   So  :P

FYI, digg.com found the site yesterday, hammered the heck out of it (2 gigs - which is all I'm allowed per month) in a few hours.  So, now it's cheesed until Febuary first.  You'll have a whole new chance to hate me then.  I'm sure the wait will be excruciating.

I got through about the first 10 or so LMAO before the mirror gave out.  40 Year-Old Virgin only got me about 4 laughs-out-loud, this had me for about 5.

There might be some taboo comedy out there, but it shouldn't matter whether it happens to be your race, or your politics, or your 100-hour MAME project, funny is FUNNY.  Comedy is the great equalizer.

Bravo!

It's about time something was said about some of the horrible pieces of crap being built.

What needs to be done next is a send up of all of the over "bling'd" cabinets. 800 Flashing LED's, beer taps, foot massagers etc. Oh, and all of the giant cabinets with 15 inch monitors.

I've got to hand it to him.. <flame repellant armour on>

I have to agree with pretty much all of those machines. I understand that not everyone has:

1) Artisitic Talent
2) Woodworking Skills
3) Money to burn

BUT...

Surely the point of BYOAC is that you're trying to recapture something that you've loved. Face it, not one plays mame games unless they've been into arcades and loved the games, cause frankly alot of those games are CRAP without the nostalgia factor.

In all my life, in ALL the arcades I've ever been in, I've NEVER EVER seen anything like these machines. What are these guys trying to capture?

I mean we've all made crap stuff, but dont they stand back and go 'Wow! That is UGLY.' What do other people say? Are they just polite?

Nothing annoys me more than the socalled FrankenPanels that most BYOAC builders seem to favour, I mean 4 players, 8 buttons each, 2 coin buttons (Even with coin mechs!) 2 start buttons, 1 escape button, a randomly placed spinner, a HUGE ASS trackball and perhaps a tron controller.

All I ask when I see these is, WHY?

The concept this guy is trying to put across is a good one, but done badly. A few years back every man and his dog was building their own homepage. So a guy started a website called http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com.

Its still around and the guy has gone on to write several books and become a big celebrity. The point of the site is that it offers constructive criticism and tries to teach new players what NOT to do. Unfortunately the only point of this site is to put ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- on the people who have worked on this stuff, however misguided. Why not counter the criticism with some creative insight into what IS good design practice for arcade machines.

See the Daily Sucker for a new page each day that SUCKS.

http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com/dailysucker/

Perhaps if the site leaned more towards what NOT to do and showed examples of quality work, it might be better received by this community.

Just my two bits.

I'm just relieved (and a little flattered) that my machine wasn't on there. The people whose machines he trashed should take it as constructive criticism. Or maybe destructive criticism.

I'd have to disagree.  There are some kickass games in mame that I'd never seen before, or had the pleasure to enjoy in an arcade (ie no nostalgia).  Heck some were never even released (prototypes).  What's crap in my opinion are most of the recent games, endless spinoffs on 1v1 fighter games, etc.

All I can ask is, why do you care?  I have what you would probably consider a frankenpanel, with a spinner, trackball, 3 players, 2 hidden coin buttons, and two player start buttons, and folding cup holders for beers.  I designed the CP so I could play just about all MY favorite games satisfactorily.  I could care less what you (or anyone else who believe their opinions to be important) thinks about it.  I built it that way because it worked best for me to comfortably enjoy all my favorite games, not because it was the 'right' or 'wrong' or 'authentic' way to do it according to someone at BYOAC.

That being said, I thought the site was hilarious (and I have marble contact paper on my CP under the lexan haha) and there were definitely some strange looking arcade cabinet shaped things on that page.  ;D  He is definitely a 'Maddox' wannabe, though.

I think there is some value to seeing pics of concepts that suck. Sometimes it can head off mistakes that are not so obvious in your mental picture.  Take epthegeeks cp for example(see pic below).

Aside from the control placement and many admin buttons this thing gives me a headache just looking at it. Way too busy, too much clutter in the image. I've made this same mistake  with desktop wallpaper. If it's to busy you have a hard time seeing the icons.

The cab Arcade Reboot (pic below) is IMO beautiful. I would be proud to have it in my house with the single exception of the X-Arcade control. This can serve as a warning to those who plan to spend a lot of time effort and dollars building a cab then save some bucks/time this way.

In the end it's only the builders opinion that really matters. I have heard from people who love my last cab, and people who hate it. What someone on a forum, or who writes a web page thinks makes no difference.

Indeed it is old. Well over a year, not sure exactly how old though.

It did get brought up here once before and so many of the "every kid gets a trophy just for showing up" crowd got all uppity about it that I took it down for a while.  I put it back up later when it blew over.

But I don't remember ever getting banned for it. The images are all from the pages that people put up, links via the examples page in many cases sure.

Seems like my rotating 6 panel driving cabinet earned me a Mamey and now earned me an Anti-Mamey.

Couple points:

1) I laughed my #$% off with his description
2) The machine has never broke once and works like a charm
3) It is "f-ing" HUGH
4) My two young children use it all the time ... they love Star Wars!
5) The two sets of pedals were in case the player wanted to use a clutch
6) It was not designed only for Mame use .....
7) My wife's one request was that a 27" monitor rotate 360 degrees ... oh well.
8 ) The name "Mom's Arcade" is a joke ...... come on ... isn't that obvious   :P

Anyway, I did laugh at his descriptions ...... take it with a grain of salt.  We all know that building is about 90% of the fun .... and that is what I got out of building my driving cabinet (my second Mame machine).

Do you think he would want to buy it?   ;D

Okay--maybe some of those on that site deserved it.  <grin>

I agree a tiny bit but most of the people building these machines are grown adults(i think). I look at it as encouraging the pursuit of excellence.

Do you think everybody should be encouraged and told "Great Job" even when the do horrible work? I would actually go so far as to say that most of these bad examples are born from lazyiness and lack of patience.

We should be doing our best to stomp out mediocrity. Not encourage it.

People should be told when they suck, that is the only way for them to learn that they should keep striving.

Or you could simply understand that these are done for ENJOYMENT by the creator and not as recreations.

I found it funny and I enjoyed the read.

If the majority of these featured cabinets were graded they would fall into the very lowest category that this community has produced.

The creators of these hideously depraved regurgitations should be ashamed of themselves. They should be locked up naked in a dark room and forced to survive on their own urine while they contemplate the vile sin they have committed

Living the delusional lifestyle.

Nobody said anything about wrong way/right way. But if you take a picture(which the builders did) and put it up on the net you are going to be judged for your work.

There isn't a wrong or right way to make a movie but some are good and some are bad(in my opinion). IN MY OPINION which is what that web page is. It's a guys opinion and critique. All of them just happen to be dead on(IN MY OPINION).

I've set the timer to see how long it will take some tool to respond with "Well, you know what they say about opinions". Annnnnnnd.................Go!

Movies are made OTHERS to use. You pay money for a product when viewing a movie. Therefore, you have a right to complain.

Have you used any of those cabinets featured? Were they made for you? They were not. They were intended for their creator. And if the creator likes 29 buttons per player, then that's their perogative. They spent the money for their product to be used by them.

You are clearly judging them right or wrong. You looked a lot better when you didn't try to hide that fact.

Point taken about the movies.

What i'm saying though is that people don't deserve to hear "Great Job!" when it's not. You do them more harm than good.

The page is very funny, but I'm sure some people actually put some hard work into the cabinets - even if they don't look so good. We all can't be master woodworkers. Then again, he is the only one around here that I see actually making comments like this. I think we need more of them. There really are some bad monstrosities out there IMHO.

So really, out of genuine curiosity, what are the 4 flight thrust controls for?   ;D

Was this directed towards my cabinet?  If so, not sure what you meant by "4 flight thrust controls".

Anyway, my 6 panel rotating cabinet has the following:

1) Star Wars yoke (ex: Star Wars, Hydra, etc ...)
2) Hang-On motorcycle handlebars (ex: Paperboy, Hang-On, Super Hang-On)
3) Pole Position steering wheel (ex: any 360 driving game)
4) Spy Hunter steering wheel (ex: any 270 driving game with fire buttons)
5) Xbox steering wheel (ex: play my Xbox stuff ... obvious)
6) Two Virtual On joysticks (for non-driving games)
7) 4  shifters (forward/back, return to center, 3 position and 4 position)
8 ) Two Virtua Racing Pedal sets (for games which require a clutch .. not just Mame)

History:
When I got the shifters, I got the "return to center" one first and a shifter which I discovered was a 3-position shifter (rather than a 4-position shifter).  Anyway, I realized the "return to center" shifter would be a pain in some games which require the player to stay in gear, so I got the forward/backward shifter.   I had to get a 4-position shifter since a lot of games use this ......  Everything just kind of multipled.   Finally, since I had all of these shifters lying around, I thought may as well use them.   The shifter panel would look pretty empty with just one shifter.   I think the shifters look better on my cabinet rather than in a box.

Also, when I planned this driving cabinet, I originally was going to make a second standup cabinet with only a Pole Position and a Spy Hunter steering wheel with a shifter and one set of pedals.   Pretty normal.   Thing is, when I went to the local arcade parts store (guy I know), he had a complete Star Wars yoke for $5 and a Hang-On motorcycle handlebar set for $5 ..... so of course I had to buy them .......  Now my cabinet turned into something larger.   I decided to throw my Xbox console on there and (to even everything out), I decided to put a couple joysticks on there as well since I could not build something like this and not be able to play non-driving games.

This is how my "planning" of my cabinet went......  it kind of just evolved by itself.

Most people might not have enough room for this thing, but I have plenty of room, so that was not a concern.   I also have a foosball table, regulation arcade-style air hockey table, Skeeball table, Kid's basketball dual-basket Super Shot game, 4-player standup Mame machine and just recently acquired a 3 canister candy machine.  Everything is great!

So the page isn't to your taste McCoy. Set up your school's firewall to block it and the issue ends there for you.

It's kind of like South Park. If it's not to your taste, then don't watch it. Calling for a ban of EpTheGeek is ridiculous.

I really don't think the site is so funny, but I feel a response to this is necessary.  I THINK koolmoe was saying that once it's on the internet... its there for everyone to judge.

Yes, the creator built it, and as long as he likes it, that's all that really matters.  However, the second I throw up pictures online for everone to see, it is there to be judged.  It's simple human nature.  We draw conclusions and opinions on EVERYTHING.

If I build a "bad" Mame machine and I like it, good for me.  If I put it online to show my cab to people BECAUSE I like it... good for me.  If I don't realize that people will have opinions on it, shame on me.

You sound like a bleeding heart here when it was the creator's decision to put their cab on the internet.  If they didn't like it, or weren't proud of it, they probably wouldn't put it online.  But they did.... and just because they did... that doesn't mean you and I have to like it.
first off your and idiot

Man I love the internet, haha.

The 404 stuff that is mentioned on the site about byoac is really true.  There are so many free programs out there that will check for dead links for you.  Its really pointless to keep all the ones up there that people have taken down.  Its also misconceiving when it says there are 1xxx examples on the front page when there really aren't.

I totally agree with RayB,

The pages were hilarious,  but not everybody has to like that kind of humour.
and he didn't post those comments here at this forum, which would have not been very nice.

Come on guys, it's obviously a joke and a good one.

I just had to laugh out loud.
I must have made strange sounds trying to keep the laughs inside here at the office  ;D

Ok finsalor. Why not.

Ahem.

SOMEBODY GET THIS THING A WONDER BRA! What the (heck)?! That giant black expanse between the bottom of the monitor and the CP make this thing look saggier than my granny and her double D's! Get this thing some support and lift before you can play it with your toes!

I've often picked up chicks with the underglow on a MAME box. They just can't resist the sex appeal that it offers as I roll by. Could use some DUBS though. I mean, come on. Ya can't go half-hooptie.

Also seen in this photo are some sort of under-control panel assault weapons. Don't best this guy at a game of Sexy Pariodius or he'll fire a nut missle at you and then it's goodbye fatherhood!

Now seriously,

The control panel is nicely laid out, not too crowded and not bigger than the trunk of a 38 Chevy sedan.  The art, while busy, is ART and not shelf paper, or pages ripped out of GAMEFAN.

Overall, You'd land closer to the "nice one" end of the bell curve - well past mediocrity and nowhere near crap, with me.

I fully support the roasting of cabs submitted by their owners for roasting.

Here, do mine:

I dunno, I think it would get old pretty fast. Lots of repetition and all that.

Yours is actually quite nice. The CP art is fantastic. The cabinet is well done. The trackball is properly flush mounted. You've got a proper bezel ...

But ...

oh HO! This sneaky bastard tried to hide some of his bursting button population from the world! Did you really think that by making them black so they don't show up so well that we'd miss them!? Not this time, bucko!

See, it's just wearing out. Yeah, you've got a ton of controls on there. But at least it's all unique stuff and laid out logically. The number of buttons you've got is probably daunting to anyone that's not you. But even though there's a jillion and ten of them, they're mostly laid out in ways that you can tell what they are.

Exept for that mysterious FLYING-V formation around the spinner! OMG! It's some kind of button attack squad! LOOK THE HELL OUT!

.... it's just not working anymore.

Hey Mark, I like the design you put around the 4-way. Makes it REALLY obvious to people.

In some ways I wish I had installed all my controls and started playing BEFORE designing my CP art. That way I would have realized a few things that needed to be included on it. OH WELL.

Thanks epthe, but I knew that already :-)

To make you all feel better, I am planning to
- fix the marquee
- replace the 21 inch pc monitor with a bigger tv one day,
- hide the tilting assault weapons,
- redo the cp,
- and upgrade the pc, to mention few things

But mark's craftmanship and artwork of the plastic forest is really awesome.

I think you disreunderguestimate the retarditty of that word.

Why was Stingray the first person I thought of when I saw this pic:

The woods in the background.  He's always telling us his house is surrounded by woods. ;D

"Standing behind this beer barrel behemoth probably puts you far enough away from the screen that the audio would be out of sync."

That's Xiaou's (or however the heck you spell it) rotating CP.  You should see how funny 1UP or Frosty's rotating CP looks, or how far away from the screen it puts you.

Yeah, I think my comments might go right over someone's head, so lemme run them smack dab into the forehead.  That one is one of the ass hat pages that doesn't take into account that it's one of the better solutions out there.

Does anyone else remember the first time CRAPMAME was up about 2 years ago?

When a link was posted here, some people got their panties in a bunch and sent him hate mail and he took the site down.

On my computer somewhere, I have a zipped copy of most of the site that I salvaged from my IE cache.  I'll have to dig it out and see how much is the same and if anything was left out this time.

While it definitely could have used a bit of tact, he definitely makes some great points. Most of those were summed up in page 31 though. The fact that it's old explains why this one didn't make the cut:

Even though its tragic that you had to gut out a perfectly good dig-dug cabinet..... thats a pretty slick looking Mame machine. Kudos to you.

Slick looking?  Are you kidding me?  It's a shelving unit and a crudely painted white box jammed into a gutted Dig Dug.

but couldn't be bothered to get their child a shirt. Nice parenting.

Kid's run around with no clothes on all the time. It's only sick when Drew does it.

Even though its tragic that you had to gut out a perfectly good dig-dug cabinet..... thats a pretty slick looking Mame machine. Kudos to you.
"gut a perfectly good" and "Kudos" should never be in the same sentence.

We might as well continue the spirit of this thread by lambasting bad arcade conversions. This site is old, but still amusing: http://www.madocowain.com/Arcade/Gallery/gallery_1.html

Have a look at the traffic stats for the crapmame site:
http://www.wickedretarded.com/globat/webstats/

The third most popular domain for visitors is midwaygames.com
Me thinks the folks at Midway have been forwarding this around the office a few hundred times and having a right ol' larf.

Bizarre Creations is right behind them too!

Ha!

It's a lot like The Best Page In The Universe. Same sort of egotistical, curseword filled humor.

http://maddox.xmission.com

But he did include his project which was pretty ugly as well.

It's a complete rip off of maddox's page.  He obviously doesn't get Maddox either.  He is the embodiment maddox's prime target; someone who just doesn't get it.  His emulation of The Best Page In The Universe doesn't speak well for capability for creative thought.  He is not familliar enough with the material that he is emulating to emulate it effectively.  He uses leet speak. He uses questionable spelling and grammar.  Most of what he says lacks depth of thought or any effective written humor.

What he does have going for him is perahps his only original idea.  Collect a library of all the homebuilt atrocities that this hobby has inspired.  Too bad he didn't present it effectively in his own way.
... arcade builders could someday rule the world...currency would be reduced to quarters only, and wars would be settled
