I used computer ccfl tubes to backlight my marquee and I am very happy with it. They don't draw much power and generate very little heat. In my opinion 2 tubes was way too dim,4 tubes were ok, but I went with 6 tubes blue in color,3 rows of 2 and am happy with the brightness. They are 12 vdc,I installed a seperate old pc power supply to use as a power source for all the cab lights and cooling fans as opposed to tapping into the computer power supply. Here's what I used http://store.yahoo.com/svcompucycle/v12inch2ccflblue.html
and a pic of my cab that was still in construction at the time.the lights are on but it's hard to get a good visual in a pic.

That is way expensive though. 6 of those tubes @ $5.99 each = $35.94 plus shipping! The average simple florescent fixture with tube is around $10 to $15 available locally.

they are $5.99  for a set of 2, not each.3 sets(6 tubes) = $18.00 + shipping which is cheaper than the happs fluorescent he was looking at. Some may think 4  (2 sets) are enough.Depends on the level of brightness you are looking for.

I picked up one of those under-counter fluorescent light fixtures from Lowe's or Home Depot for $5 marked down from $10.  It lights my marquee very well.

You can see some pics here - Aqua Jack Marquee Page
