add diagonal microswitches to a Super?
« on: October 21, 2005, 09:46:36 am »
I had thought for some silly reason that it would be possible to make a 8way to 4way switch for happ supers by putting a switch between the diagonal microswitch and the ipac.  Of course Supers don't have a diagonal microswitch since the diagonal signal is a combination if the up or down with the left or right; and the diagonal signal is ignored by four way games, creating the delay until you release the up or down microswitch and only the sidways swith is active.

So, I was wondering if it would be feasable, or even possible to add diagonal microswitches to a super.  Wire them up to send both up and left , or up and right..... etc   then put a switch into the diagonal circuits which would allow you to shut them off.  You'd have to modify the little metal levers on the microswitches so that you couldn't depress the up and sideways at the same time.  And you'd probabl then have to make sure you couldn't send three keypresses at the same time by depressing the diagonal and the up, or sidways.

Any thoughts?

There probably wouldn't be any room.  You could configure mame to send two inputs with one press, but it really wouldn't be worth it IMO.

You'd spend a hell of a lot of time on this for little reward.  Just get a Ms. Pac Reunion sticks, they are pretty much 4way Supers, and Ponyboy has them on sale for a killer price.

I don't see why you could have the corner switch you'd just wire the one switch into both the up and left on the Ipac. The only thing that I'm not sure about is how you'd be albe to disable JUST the corner switches. That doesn't seem to be an easy task. Hardly seems worth the effort. Good luck to, Please let us know what you end up doing.

Of course Supers don't have a diagonal microswitch since the diagonal signal is a combination if the up or down with the left or right; and the diagonal signal is ignored by four way games,

No joysticks have 8 switches.
As for the diagonals being ignored in 4-way games, that depends. Some games will actually behave funny if two switches are active. For example, try QIX or the LightCycles in TRON. You'll seee that push diagonal causes "stair-step" diagonal drawing. With a proper 4-way joystick you would never be able to do this.
NO MORE!!

I added Leaf style switch to my P360 joysticks installed diagonally for Q-Bert/Congo Bongo works perfectly.
