Getting rid of the last signs of Windows XP?
« on: June 17, 2005, 08:20:52 am »
The only thing i have left to do in my cab is to get rid of the darn Windows "welcome" blue screen, and the windows "shut down" blue screen.

Can anyone show me step by step how to do this or point me to a website or post that has step by step instructions on how to do this?

I'm not very computer savy, but i think it involves messing with the registry, but i hate to do too much in there, cause i could really mess things up bad.

p.s.  Does anyone know how to get the darn recycle bin off the desktop, or change the icon.  On Windows 98, i was able to change the icon to a black little dot, so you couldn't see it,,,on Windows XP, i can't seem to do anything with it.

A quick Google found this:
http://malektips.com/xpwam0007.html

1. Click the "Start" menu.
2. Select "Control Panel".
3. When the Control Panel appears, select "User Accounts".
4. When the "User Accounts" window appears, underneath "Or pick an account to change", click "Change the way users log on or off".
5. Uncheck "Use the Welcome Screen".
6. Click the "Apply Options" button.

Edit: I'm not sure how to remove the recycle bin. Maybe you could replace the icon with one the same color as your desktop, and make the text color the same as the desktop too.

Thanks....my fault, i didn't check my previous post this morning, as it was a post about the "loading screen" so i wasn't aware there'd be stuff in there about the shutdown and welcome screen as well.

I did manage to find stuff about the recycle bin, so i'm gonna give it a try.

I'm not very good at messing with the registry, but this article i found says you can change stuff using script with notepad?  Anyways,  you can't change the recycle bin icon...but if anyone wants to get it off the desktop, here's the script:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\ClassicStartMenu]
"{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel]
"{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}"=dword:00000001

If anyone has similar script for hiding the welcome and shut down screens, please post them..thanks!

You can get rid of icons on the desktop without the registry. Right click on on the desktop, choose Arrange Icons, and Uncheck "Show Desktop Icons".  The TweakXP PowerToy can also take care of this I believe.
