What the heck is the 7th button for on NEO-GEO games
« on: June 10, 2005, 07:00:28 pm »
O.K, maybe I don't remember right,
    but I don't recall any cab with seven buttons per player.
I remember an upright that had many games on it ( at a bollwing alley) that I played several times, But I believe it only had four per player.
They treated me like an animal and that's what I became.

The 7th button allows you to play Capcom with 6 buttons, or Neo-Geo with 4 buttons, using the same bank of buttons.

For Capcom, you use:

   O O O
   O O O
x

For Neo-Geo, you use:

   X X X
   O O O
O

It's not about a game with 7 buttons it's a layout thing.

SF2          123
               456

Neo Geo       234
                 1

So they add the 7th button to get the neo geo feel.  So wher you play games it goes like this.

x = unused

SF2      123
           456
          X

Neo Geo      XXX
                  234
                1

It plays way better that way.  But you can certainly play the neo geo games like this if you want to.

    123
    4xx

* edit*
Dude that sucks!

thanks for the graphics...

I was wondering. I am planning my CP now and with all of the 7 button CP's out there I figured it was the thing to do but never really knew why?

I guess I know now, huh?

thanks!

So how would you wire this up for an IPac?  Or is it a matter of configuring the buttons for each different style of game?

By that, I mean, if the layouts are:
x = unused

SF2      123
           456
          X

Neo Geo      XXX
                  234
                1

Button 1, 2, 3, and 4 are completely different depending on the game.  The IPac can take up to 8 buttons per player, but how are they "mapped" out to be the desired configuration?

Thanks!

You know I thought the main reason for that button was for "run" in Mortal Combat. But maybe everyone is too cool for Mortal Combat these days. Still kind of hard to play with the exact layout but it makes it workable.

I hated every Mortal Kombat past the second one.  If I want to play a combo game, I'll play Killer Instinct.  ;)
