Lines across Galaga screen
« on: June 04, 2005, 12:19:35 am »
I'm using Vantage on a cocktail cabinet, and when running Galaga or Galaga 84 I get horizontal lines of pixels on the black background.  See the attached picture.  However, I'm not getting these lines in other games such as Invaders, Galaxian, etc.  Any ideas whats causing this?  I've tried with and without scan lines turned on.  Specs. . .

166Mhz
64Mb RAM
Standard 14" PC monitor
Vantage 1.12
DOS 7.1
Games Launcher

Bump . . .

See my previous post below. Can anyone assist this problem.  I've now tried replacing the video card, this didn't fix the problem.  I've also noticed in Cocktail mode it only happened in Player one, when the screen flips to Player 2 the lines disappearthen reappear when Player one plays again.

Assistance appreciated.

ROM issue?  Doesn't appear to be a hardware issue.

It's a ROM issue no doubt, you could always just run the Galag clone.

Not sure it is a ROM issue, I've tried Galaga84 and Uniwars and I get exactly the same problem.  I cant try Galag as it isnt supported on Vantage and I'm running a 166MHz machine, so MAME isnt an option.  Games such as Galaxian, Invaders, Luna Rescue, Balloon Bomber, etc all work OK.

sure MAME is still an option, just use 36 final.

On that machine I'm not sure it's enought umph.

If it's intermittent, ie some games work, some games don't, and some games work after being *flipped*, then it's a software issue somewhere.

Are you running SciTech Display Doctor?  What are the specs of the machine you're running (list everything)?  What OS?  TSRs?

I've run galaga/galaxina/invader ala 80's game on a P90 and P100 w/36 final. I still have my LCD/Broken Laptop w/P90 w/36final on it. It runs it very reasonably good. This is all in plain vanilla DOS w/integrated soundboard and video board.

$20 will buy you a much better computer, I would just replace the computer altogether.

It's enough to test that the ROM file is good...

Based on the advice from Thenasty, I tried using MAME 0.36 instaed of Vantage 1.12, and I works very well.  All those lines in Galaga have disappeared, all ROM's work, its only very slightly slower and only noticable during loading.  I'm using..

P166
16MB RAM
256Mb Compact Flash Card + IDE adaptor
DOS 7.1
Games Launcher
MAME 0.36

Thanks to all who helped!
