« on: May 20, 2005, 01:43:12 am »
i just got back from a little road trip to pick up this(the one on the left):

it's 99% complete(only missing smoked plex for the lower monitor) and came with 11 games. only cost was a little gas and time, i'll take that trade any day.

Nice find and even nicer price! I assume one of the games is duckhunt or hogan's alley with that gun.

*NOTE* The following comments are made under the assumption that this thing doesn't actually work. If it does work, the obvious thing to "do with it" is clean it up and leave it alone. That being said...

I think I saw Howard mention in one thread that he's working on dual-screen support in MAME for Nintendo PC10 games, (though I may just be full of it).

If the thing isn't working anyways, you may want to consider MAMEing it. I think an ArcadeVGA can handle negative sync monitors.

You may also want to consider a dual-screen Nintendo console setup. Have your menu in the top screen and play the games in the bottom screen. It ought to be decently simple to set up, shouldn't take a particularly powerful PC, and would be super cool. That's what I would do if I had a busted Nintendo PC10 cab.

By the way, I've seen PC10 sideart going for crazy cheap on Ebay lately (like under $10).

Yeah, that's a good solution.  Let's take a complete game and just Mame it.

So what if it doesn't work.  Let's just toss the insides and put in a computer that will play ten thousand million gamzezez.

I recently heard of this one guy, he got a Space-something Deluxe cabinet, complete but non-working, and he's thinking of doing just that.  Maybe the two of you can get together, share some tips, and you'll have a machine that will play eleventy-billion gamzezezezezezez!!!!!

Everyone should note that Peale is hypersensitive to MAMEing, plus he's probably suffering from serious lack of sleep.   ;D

But seriously, don't MAME it.  Trade it to someone local for a Dynamo that would be far more suitable for MAME if you don't want to fix it.  That cab doesn't look like the greatest of choices for MAME anyway.

Yes, his avatar is just a PG version of the way he reacted when I told him I wanted to MAME the Tank II he helped me get.  That's how against MAMEing complete originals the guy is.

Yeah, speaking of which, I had an idea about that.  There are caps on the main board that may have dried out.  Try replacing them.

Ok for one, I haven't MAMEd that SID yet despite the multiple opportunities to do so. I don't plan on doing it anymore, either. Don't be so sensitive.

Second, it's not like PC10 is that great. It was just an arcade version of the console, anyways. Would you care if someone MAMEd a Dynamo cabinet?

Third, if you left it as a Nintendo emulator you wouldn't have to change anything cosmetically. The buttons and controls would already be set to play Nintendo games (joystick and 2 buttons). You would be short by a "Select" button, but how many games actually used one, anyways? That would be so totally reversible. It sure beats the alternative (sitting there collecting dust).

Would I like to have a Nintendo cabinet for my console games? You bet I would! Would I do that to a Donkey Kong or Popeye? Of course not. But a PC10? Come on...

(...and I'll give those caps a look. How do I test one? Or would I just have to replace it?)

As long as it applies to the thread... does it handle negative sync monitors?

wild gunmen is the only gun game that came with it. i was pretty surprised dh wasn't there.

heh heh, if you saw my garage you know the answer to that question. at last count 11 cabinets 5 pinball projects......i could use the room. although if it worked i'd bring it in the game room but ......

*NOTE* The following comments are made under the assumption that this thing doesn't actually work.

correct, but it's not totally dead. when powered up, the top monitor does show the instructions although the picture is a bit squashed, while the bottom monitor is pretty much blank. i don't think there is any sound either. i guess i can't complain tho, the price was right.

i haven't touched it since i brought it home so things might be worse now. i was planning on checking power and swapping the monitor connectors today to try and narrow the problem down a bit. it did come with an extra boardset so i'm hoping that power and pcb will be fine. then i can move on to the monitors.

Actually, that was directed @ Chad.

As for why it may not work, try capping both monitors.  They're both Sanyos, right?  Notorious for that problem.

i think this is good news for the pc. after doing some testing i think i've narrowed the problem to the pcb or wiring harness.

i'm pretty sure the psu is fine, the 24v line is showing 22v but i'm guessing thats good enough(correct me if i'm wrong here). all other lines are spot on.

after swapping connectors to the monitors the bottom one does work fine, the picture is better than the top one actually. after adjusting the top one i got the picture less squashed, but i think alans is right, a cap kit would do wonders for it.

i'm going to test continuity in the harness in a bit. if that checks out, it sounds like i've got some board issues.

so far i've gotta say i'm impressed with this nintendo cab. the parts are easy to get to, pcb is a snap to remove, voltages were listed on the psu, and etc. the overall build is better than most of the u.s. built cabs i've worked on, which seem to have a sloppy look when you open them up. reminds me of working on my sega turbo which also has a well thought out design.

I swear I had a reply about this.  You *definitely* have to replace the caps.  Sanyo monitor, right?  Only way to bring it back.

i think i should have initially described the lower monitor as "not having a picture", instead of "dead". before i had time to really get into it i simply assumed it was a monitor problem. the minute or two i had it plugged in at it's previous owners house wasn't enough time to troubleshoot. today i was able to look at it a little more closely.

i took the input wires that lead to the upper monitor and attatched them to the lower one, i also connected the lower monitors input to the upper one. when i did this low and behold the lower monitor had a picture(and a pretty good one) and the upper monitor did not.

from this i gather the problem must be downstream from the monitors, since the psu looks to be ok, i think either the pcb is not outputing a signal to the lower monitor harness or the harness is bad. i'm leaning to pcb problems since it's doing some other weird stuff (like not detecting installed game boards).

i still want to put in cap kits as the upper monitor has some issues and it's just a good idea. but since both monitors do have a picture once a good signal is supplied, i will work on getting the game up first.

i could do a pcb swap at eldorado games which is just down the road from where i live. i haven't decided if i want to invest $130 in this game yet. there is also ebay. i still need to rule out the harness as the culprit, maybe later tonight i'll get to it.

Yeah.. when I finally get around to building my cab I think I might but a small TV on top just for P.C.-10..  It really doesnt have to be the same size I guess since it just a menu.. It'd be cool for Punch Out! too...  now if we could just get the Guncon2 work with PC I'll be all set!  ;D
