Good MAME games to show the wife?
« on: November 26, 2002, 11:14:57 am »
What are some wife safe MAME games?  Specifically, 2 player cooperative games.  I have only found one that she really enjoys, its called Oo Poko and it is a Japanese puzzle game sort of in the puzzle bobble spirit, and it is cooperative instead of competitive.  I highly recommend it if any of you is looking for one that the wife or girlfriend would enjoy.

If you know of any others, please list them here.

Wife safe?  That depends on your wife...

My wife plays Centipede mostly.  Two player cooperative games include most multi-player side-scrollers; of course, those are mostly fighters, which may turn her off.  Rip-Off is cooperative, but that also incorporates a violence aspect, if that's an issue...

One of my favorite 2 player games that would probably make your wife happy would be Toobin'.  It's somewhat competitive but is more or less an indivdual type of game IMHO.

That game is a pain in the tail to find a control pattern for if you didn't design your CP around it to start with!

A six button street fighter layout works fine for toobin. Top left and right buttons are back left and right, bottom left and right buttons are forward left and right and bottom middle button is throw pop can.
It QUITE competitive though... bumping each other into branches... bumping flags to lower point scores... she may not like that aspect of it. Cooperative two player games are a tough category...

How about Space Duel? ..Two player tethered. Thats actually alot of fun if you're trying to work together.. (also if you're not heh)
If you build a frankenpanel, chances are I don't care for you as a person.

Make all the joystick directionals "throw popcan". Then all you have to do is bump it with your arm...

Well, you'd be surprised how easily your wife can become engrossed with a cabinet.  Both myself and my cab-building buddy have wives that were definitely opposed to having cabinets in their homes.  Now the wives spend more time on the machines than he or I do!

Puzzle games are good:  Puzzle Bobble, Magical Drop, Pnickies, Klax, etc.

--Funny side note-I showed my wife every puzzle game I could think of  and she plays them all.  Smiles all around, love is in the air, $500 debt for building the cabinet slowly being forgotten.  3 weeks later I decide to fire up Tetris for a go--she peeks over my shoulder and proclaims "What is that?"

She had never seen Tetris before.  I just naturally assumed that she had played it before--who hasn't played Tetris?  Silly me.  She must be the last person in the US or Europe over the age of 18 to play it and I married her.  Bless her innocent heart.  It's now her favorite BTW--

You would also be suprised at some other games.  My wife fell in love w/ Galaga, for all the reasons why it is a classic (not as stale as Space Invaders or Galaxian, not as frenetic as any other shooter).  Hits the sweet spot for women.

Surprisingly, some of the games I would stereotypically consider "girls games" like Flicky or New Zealand Story she will have no part of.

What complex creatures women are . . .

My wife can't get enough Frogger. The sound system in my cab is pretty potent and when the frog gets squashed the whole cabinet vibrates. (maybe thats why she likes it) :-* heh heh.

My wife loves Galaga also.  Her favorite puzzle game is Karian Cross, a competitive one.  She likes to kick my butt on that one...  Joust is a good cooperative OR competitive game (your choice!  ;) )  Mario Bros is a really good co-op.  Also, I've noticed that a lot of women still gravitate to Ms. Pac-Man whenever I see it in the arcades!

My wife also kept telling me to wait to build my cab, now she plays it more than I do!  (Well, I tinker with it mostly...  :P )

The question was in regards to a game, not what it's like in a most married couples bedroom!  ;)

Centipede is Mrs. 'quatch's game of choice on the cabinet.  Trivia: IIRC, it was the first commercial arcade game to be designed by a woman.

Be warned though: When my wife fired up the cabinet and saw that her initials were at the number two high score - replaced by MY initials at number one - it wasn't a pretty site.   :)

my wife...err..

The difference between "wife" and "err" is like the difference between "drivers licence" and "training wheels".

For the record:
My wife has probably never played a game in an arcade.
My wife has probably never played tetris, or pac man, or...
My wife has enjoyed watching me play Galaga, Return to Wolfenstein, and especially Gauntlet, because I am particularly good at it. "You've spent time learning how to do that. I can tell."
My wife sort of thought Joust was ok.

If your wife is adverse to killing ants, there aren't many video games that will appeal to her. If your wife doesn't like competition, there aren't many games that will appeal to her.

I just found a great game tonight that fits your criteria.

Go Go! Mile Smile

It's very cute and female friendly and SERIOUSLY addictive. You both work together to clear the mazes and this game is tons of fun!

I'm positive she'll like this one.

Heh, snaaake... re-read his comment... HIS wife is averse to killing animals/ants not your gf.  he's also pointing out that there's semantic differences between marriage and dating (see someone elses previous chiller comment =P  )

A girl you are dating might pretend to like playing a game with you on your arcade  to placate you... your wife will just  take your wallet and go to the mall while you are busy downstairs playing video games... subtle differnce there =P  Now I know why I have hand me down parts in my cabinet and not a AMD xp 2000
or the like =P

If your wife is adverse to killing ants, there aren't many video games that will appeal to her. If your wife doesn't like competition, there aren't many games that will appeal to her.

This paragraph begs the question:  do you have children?  My wife was a mild-mannered nice woman like yours until two pups came along.  Now after an exhaustive day of tending to a 3 year old and an 18 month toddler (as well as 4 hours of work every day on top of that) she would like nothing better than to KILL! KILL! KILL! some Galaga baddies, zone out on a puzzle game or to Joust me right out of the sky.

If you have no children, just don't be surprised if someday after your little one(s) is born you find her in front of a shooter cursing like a sailor who is on hour 22 of a 36 hour shore leave.

Motherhood can be scary . . .
