New Product - V2 spinner & Push Kit
« on: February 07, 2005, 07:39:04 pm »

The new V2 is essentially a reduced-footprint Vortex, but with some enhanced functionality.  Here are some photos comparing the V2 to the Vortex:

The V2 only requires a 2" x 3 3/8" space on your control panel, which is just a little more than the Model 3, but less than a standard joystick.

Here's a quick run down on the V2:

Real nice looking.  Please look hard into that push / pull option.  I'll take one of those  ;).

Thanks for the comments, all!!

Thenasty - Now don't go spoiling the surprise...

Santoro -  A perfect example of why the V2 exists.  I received enough emails from people looking for a mini-Vortex that I just couldn't ignore it.  Who says I don't listen??  Sorry it wasn't available in time for you, though.  :(    That makes me think of this photo I received from a customer who had a similar situation, but he came up with a creative method of lowering the spinner and extending the shaft.

JODY - With the Push Kit, the core Push/Pull functionality is built in, it just needs to be implemented.  With the Push Kit the shaft can move up and down independent of the flywheel, so we are better than halfway there.  The final hurdle is adding a Pull switch and a method to actuate it, and that's what I'm looking at now.  I have a prototype working with both push and pull springs, so it's just another switch and bracket right now that I'm coming up with a method to make work.

Kremmit - Yeah, Bandido is one, but I like Forgotten Worlds a little better.  :)

Thanks again everyone!

Kelsey

SWEET!

I don't specificially need the space, but I love the idea of a push / pull.... Especially as an addon (so I can budget it in parts)

For people who purchase the push kit... Will the pull kit be a replacement?  And addon?

So for those who ultimately want a push/pull... Should we wait?

"SWEET!", or Napoleon Dynamite "SWEET!" ?

Not quite sure about that yet, I have to get a bit further with the Push/Pull before I can say for sure.  The black flywheel cap with the 4 holes in it as shown in the Push Kit will certainly be required.  What I'm going to try to do is make the Pull Kit just an extra switch/bracket/spring that will be added on top of the Push Kit.  I need to do a bit more playing around before I can say for sure, though.

I suppose I just HAVE to get one of these too!
Put me down for one with the push kit. :)

Oscar,
If you have success with the pull kit, let us know - I'd definitely be ready to buy if you manage to make it work. Even if you don't it's very tempting.

Looks awesome OSCAR - Highly appreciated.

I came up with some games that the push spinner would be useful on, in case anyone is wondering:

Tin Star/FrontLine/Wild Western - The spinner would be ideal for this, as soon as someone hacks MAME so that it uses the same type of control scheme as Ikari, which brings me to:

Ikari - This game is difficult to play without true rotary joysticks - with this spinner, you can use the spinner for rotation, and the push for shots (just need a convenient button or third hand/toes for grenades).

Tron - It would be possible to play Tron with push-to-fire on the Spinner rather than using a trigger stick.

I'm sure there's others, but those jumped out at me!!!

Great job, OSCAR!!!!

No Problem, believe it or not I actually got it in there finally. I just had to get a little creative with the angles and my CP support ledger.

Few more questions.

With the smaller encoder wheel.  How is the accuracy?  Can you notice a difference?  Do they act the same with the same settings in mame?

And

If I order one WITHOUT the push kit (waiting to see about the push/pull kit).  Will you give fair warning before running out of them?   I'm a little worried that they might become discontinued (or you run out and it cost too much to make another run of the brackets).  IE, will it require 1000 order on the brackets to make it?  And will you give  a big "last call" on the "last run"?

OT - Santoro, just saw your tagline, I'm a big RUSH fan also (or I was in high school when that song came out).

Interestingly, the song says "If you choose not to decide, you STILL have made a choice", but the lyric sheet in the Permanent Waves album says "If you choose not to decide, you CANNOT have made a choice."  I think RUSH changed their mind about this between writing and recording the song.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread, sorry for the interrruption . . .

Looks good!!

Count me in if you can make this a Push/Pull spinner.

Any other games that would use a Spinner with push?

GAH! Where was this spinner when I paid almost twice that for a Tornado? The small footprint together with the small price should guarantee this one to be a great selling item. Very nice. Next time I need a spinner I know which one I'll be buying.

Oscar,

You said above that you're working on adding a pull to this spinner.  Just wondering if one purchases the Spinner with the push now, would the pull be a simple attachment?

Thanks!

Perfect timing Oscar!  ;D

I really wanted to have a push/pull spinner for my cabs, but the old model was too big to fit in the limited space, and now is no longer available...  :'(

However, this new model is just the right size!  Looks like I'll be able to give my customers a push-pull option after all!  Discs of Tron, here I come!  8)

Here are some more dimensions of the V2 w/ the Push Kit

Note that the shaft is shown set up for a 3/4" control panel.  If your control panel thickness will be less than 3/4" add the difference between your cp thickness and 3/4", and add that to the overall depth.  For example, if you have a 1/2" thick control panel, add 1/4" to the overall depth as that is the amount that the shaft and switch bracket will need to slide down.

Lilwolf - the V2 has very good response, very close to the Vortex.  For Tempest, I had it set up for my Vortex and had the Sensitivity set at 40%.  To get the same amount of travel with the V2, I changed the Sensitivity setting to just around 50%.  For those interested, 180 deg of knob rotation should give you 3 full "spots" in Tempest to be the same as the original game.  A customer sent me this info, and I recently verified it for myself when one of my buddies picked up a Tempest cab.  :)

As I posted earlier, I do not know much about the Pull Kit because it is not designed.  As such, I apologize that I can not confirm many of your questions regarding a product that is not available.  PLEASE NOTE - everything regarding the Pull is SUBJECT TO CHANGE, because, again, it is not designed yet.

However, I am keeping in mind the components of the Push Kit and trying to integrate them into the Pull Kit.  I already know that almost every part of the Push Kit is required to also do the Pull action, right now there are only 1 or possibly 2 suspect parts that may not be neccessary.  I don't want to promote false hope here, it's not like a Pull Kit is going to be ready in a next week or so, unless I happen to have one of those "Eureka" moments and it all falls into place.   ;)

push / pull question

Will gravity keep the spinner from going up?  (ie, you don't need another spring?)

Is there a E clip on the very bottom?

#17 in the diagram is a spring that pushes the knob back up off the switch.
From the looks of things, the shaft won't even ride on the switch when turning, like the DOT and Oscar up/down spinners do.

Also as near as I can tell, there is no e-ring.
Everything is held in place by screws.

OSCAR: The real questions!

Why did you sell your beautiful Centipede on Ebay?

Why did you sell your awesomely restored Guerilla war on Ebay?

Are you going to the April 16th SA?

jeez, no one asks the important questions!  ;D

Please, I'm still not over that yet....    :'(   But I had to make room for my Creature from the Black Lagoon pinball in the game room, so....

The guy that bought the G-War was very happy with it when he stopped by to pick it up, so I couldn't feel too bad about it.  I did point out Peale's black P1 & P2 start buttons on the cp and told him he had a real score there.  The look on his face told me he had no idea what I was talking about, he probably thought I was nuts or something.  :)

The Centi didn't sell.  Just as well, though, because I didn't really want to see that one go.  I had to make the token effort for the wife, though, because that was part of the deal with the pin.  Heh, she forgot to mention anything about me setting a reserve and what would happen if it *didn't* sell.  Win/win for me (for the time being anyways).

I'll probably go to the SA, but that's not in stone yet.  I liked it better when they were at the fairgrounds that were closer to me.  I've only made it once over to K'Zoo so far.

Does this mean another run of the original Push/Pull is out of the question?

I don't know about everyone else but I'd much prefer the Leaf style of the Push/Pull to this new spinner's clicky microswitches, especially on the CP I plan on building with P360s and leaf buttons...
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

Oscar, can I make one request when you go to design the pull action?  Please please please...put a spring return on the top rather than relying on gravity to pull it back down.  I am positive I will be using this spinner on my cabinets, and it needs a spring strong enough to keep the pull switch from tripping when the Tron panel is upside-down.

Otherwise, the idea looks very good!  Get stocked up, because I will be putting in a large order very soon.  I may even have to put two spinners on my cabs since they will actually fit now!  :)

To kick off the release of the V2, I have listed (20) on eBay for $45.99!   :D   Trust me, this is a one-time deal.  They will go live on my website for $55 tonight or tomorrow.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6153575964

1UP - Yes, I fully intend to include an Up spring.  There needs to be some resistance for the pull or it wouldn't feel right.

quarterback - Hmm, I guess I didn't think of that.  It would be an interesting installation.  :)

crashwg -  I have to see how the Pull Kit ends up for the V2 before I make that determination for sure.

This is going to seem like a dumb question, but I'm wondering how well suited this spinner would be for use in a beatmania/IIDX control panel? Can anyone who has experience with both this spinner or it's predecessor and beatmania/IIDX arcade controls offer any advice? I already have an idea as to how I will make this work for a PS2 using a PIC, my main concern is the flyweight. I know from experience that the arcade turntables have some weight and resistance to them, I'm just wondering how much heavier/lighter feeling and possibly how much longer this will spin in comparison to the actual arcade turntables.

That is a nylon bearing, same one used in the Vortex and original Tempest (although Tempest used a white nylon  instead of the newer blue-style ones).

Thanks to all that have already purchased the new V2's, everyone that paid by Sunday night has their's on the way to them!  :)

You'll be glad you did if the pull function ever comes out on this.
I've got that knob on my Oscar Up/Down, and LOVE it.

I was never that fond of the "hat" knobs used on Tempest anyway.

I just got my V2 today.
I'll play with it when I get home, and see how it compares to the other spinners I have.

Just got mine hooked up to the frankenpanel I use for testing, so let me be the first to review!  :)

Well, it's certainly easy to mount.  Just remove the knob and put the shaft thru any 3/8" or larger hole.

I ordered this one with the DOT knob, so this is the first time I've used this type of knob in over 20 years.  For the record, if you're using a Mini-Pac, you have to break off the two outside plastic tabs behind the header pins for the spinner harness to fit.  I also had to reverse the x-axis in MAME with the Mini-PAC.

That said, Oscar's sensitivity settings are bang on!  I tried a setting of 50 for Tempest, and it does indeed give you 3 slots/180 degree turn.  I found the size and weight of the DOT knob very nice for Tempest.  The Push-action is firm enough that you will not accidentally hit it, you definitely have to concsiously push it.  I rather liked the effect of setting the Super Zapper to use the push-switch, so I could just concentrate on firing with one button, and slap the knob when I was in trouble.  Very cool.  8)

I had to try Forgotten Worlds, which I've had on my machine for some time, but have never played.  Definitely an interesting game.  I had to crank my sensitivity all the way to 255 to get any decent response time out of the spinner, but once that was done, I was doing pretty good.  It is a little bit difficult to manage all the turning and shooting since the knob is the ONLY fire button in the game, but once you get accustomed to it, it works pretty well.

Overall, the spinner has a nice feeling.  It truly is compact, taking less space on the panel than a regular joystick.  The spin is slightly noisier than the Vortex spinner, and it spins slightly fewer rotations-per-crank than its forefather (V2 spins 3-4 times, while the Vortex spins 5-6 times)  The spin time is more than enough than you would need for any game, but if you like 3 minute spin times, you know where to go...

The extra space between the plate where the shaft bearing is, and the underside of the CP seems to leave open possibilities for some kind of lighting kit, but I'll be happy just to get a pull-kit on this puppy!

All in all, a really nice spinner for the $$.  My spinner has a first name, it's O-S-C-A-R, my spinner has a second name, it's...uh...

...O-S-C-A-R!

Hey 1UP, thanks for the comments!!

Another easy way to reverse the direction of the spinner for encoders that don't support axis-reversing (other than swapping wires around) is to rotate the optic board 180 degs.  The top 2 screws that hold the frame together are also located such that they can hold the optic board as well.  For the V2, I anticipated that some encoders may interpret the optic signals "reversed", so rather than tell someone they have to change wires around, I set it up such that there are alternate mounting holes for the optic board so they don't have to manually change the spinner direction settings in MAME to "Reverse".  Pretty clever, huh?  ;)

For reference, with my USB mouse board, all you have to do is rotate the 3 pin header from the spinner to the USB 180 degrees to reverse the direction of the spinner.

Forgotten Worlds is strange.  I haven't yet been able to obtain an original Forgotten Worlds spinner, but either the original spinner itself had like 500 teeth or a gear set (like Arkanoid), or else the MAME driver isn't calibrated correctly.  Out of all my collection of various arcade spinners, in MAME I always have to jack the Sensitivity setting to the max for that game.  At least it is playable since MAME allows such a large range for the Sensitivity settings.

Thanks again!

Kelsey

OK, I'll go SECOND I guess.
I'm going to concentrate on the DOT vs. Oscar Up/Down vs. V2 similarities and differences.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Installation

The V2 is the easiest of the 3 to install.
You need a hole for the shaft to poke through (size isn't critical), and put in four screws or bolts.

By contrast, the Up/Down requires you to PRECISELY mount the top bushing into your CP to minimize shaft wobble.
If you get the hole even a little crooked (I didn't have a drill press handy on my first attempt) it will bind the shaft, and severely decrease spin time.

Mounting Dimensions

The V2 (without the push kit) is approximately the same depth as the DOT and Up/Down without their push switches.
The fact that the V2 uses a microswitch increases its depth more than the other two, which both use leaf switches.

The V2 definitely wins in the footprint war though.
It is about 1/4 the size of either of the others.

Spin Times

The V2 spins a little better than the Up/Down and DOT, but all three do a more than adequate job from a realistic gaming standpoint.

Push Weight

The Up/Down in unmodified form will almost push itself--literally.
I just retrofit mine with a second support leaf today to offset the weight of the knob vs. the DOT spinner.
The DOT spinner has a plastic knob, whereas Oscar's spinners use machined aluminum (at least on MY CP).
That extra weight makes the Up/Down push very easily.

The V2 requires more pressure to activate the down switch, but rides at the neutral height better than the other two.
Both the DOT and the Up/Down seem to kind of float while they spin, whereas the V2 remains very stable vertically.

In-game Spin

The V2 has alot smaller encoder wheel than the other two, so it doesn't run as many teeth past the optics as the larger wheels, given the same amount of rotation.
The result of this is that the V2 needs to be adjusted slightly more sensitive in the game settings to achieve the same amount of movement/rotation.

I'm using an older version of MacMAME, so the "proper" setting on Tempest is only 35% on my machine.
Using that setting on the V2, I get 6 lanes/rotation.
With my Up/Down at the same setting, I get about 12 lanes/rotation.

Shaft Backlash

One downside to ALL of the Push/Pull style spinners is backlash.
I actually retrofit my Up/Down to "almost" eliminate the backlash that it had.
There really isn't an easy way to reduce backlash on the DOT spinner.

The backlash in the V2 is about the same as I had on the unmodified Up/Down, and about the same as my DOT spinner.
Oscar did include set screws on the V2 that lock the shaft to the flywheel, to eliminate this.
Unfortunately, they disable the push function when they are tightened, so there's a trade-off.

Flywheel Weight

The apparent weight of all three spinners are relatively close.
The DOT spinner feels the heaviest, the Up/Down is in the middle, and the V2 feels the lightest.
But again, the difference between them is not that great.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OK, now that I've submitted MY review, I'm going to go tear mine apart.
The exploded view PICTURE just isn't the same as pieces all over my room.
I want to see what really makes this thing tick.

Feel free to post any questions you have, and I'll try to answer them, or research them when I have time.

OK, I've torn the V2 completely apart now.

I can report that this thing is VERY well designed.
The entire flywheel is a one-piece unit, with the encoder wheel press fit onto it.
The combination of the brass bushing at the bottom, and nylon bushing at the top keep the shaft wobble to almost zero.
The spring inside is made of "expanded" spring steel, and should give very long life, with less sagging, than the flat spring steel used on the DOT and Up/Down spinners.
There is very little metal-to-metal contact, so durability should be very good on it, as well.

I did make one modification to it while reassembling it though.
I followed Oscar's recommendation, and mounted the optic card "upside-down", using the bolts that hold the frame together.
This was to fix the fact that the optics on it react the opposite of my Up/Down optics, and will allow me to interchange the two without wire-swapping.
This is also the recommended fix, as Oscar mentioned above, to make it work properly with the Opti-pac.

I couldn't wait to play with my new Spinner so I made a temp. controll panel out of the box it came in.

I told you to build a modular CP.
All I did was rip a flightstick hack I don't use anymore out of ITS module, and stuff the V2 into it.

Finally got mine hooked up, great spinner.   One small improvement might be a way to mount the encoder on the other sides where the spinner could fit in a little bit tigher spaces.  Since the mounting ears already stick out  3.4 inches, and the encoder board is almost 3 inches, you could fit the spinner in a 3.4x2 inch space, rather than 3.4x3, if the encoder was just attached to the wide side.

Hey Kelsey,

"cathodic acrylic electrocoat"

I'm assuming that's powder coating, yes?

Ray - If you need a box, I'll include one with your order, no problem.  :)

Brax - No.  Powder coating is a no-no with toleranced parts due to the thickness.  The finish is what is referred to in the industry as "E-coat", however, there are various types of e-coat finish.  So I included the type of e-coat finish that is on the spinner frames.  For those that aren't familiar with it, e-coat is extremely thin (about the thickness of zinc plating) and very durable, perhaps better than powder coating depending on the application.

I've been holding out too.  I figured I would buy the push/pull kit and the DOT knob at the same time.  ;D

i'd be interested in a spinner if it had leafs as well...(push/pull of course)

or you could just give us a viable way to change over from microswitch.

Try to find one of OSCAR's original push/pulls on E-bay, maybe?
