Suggestions of good one on one games for Mame party.
« on: October 19, 2002, 11:52:12 pm »
I'm having a Mame party next weekend. The problem is that I have all the games that mame .61 supports.... it's seriously overwhelming! ( for me AND my guests hehe)

Head to head style games seem to be most popular.... any suggestions? I have a two player side by side cocktail with 2 joysticks and 6 buttons each and a trackball.

I was thinking Track and Field, the Puzzle Bobbles, Bomberman...... the fighting style games are obvious.... maybe even Toobin

Even though they're not head to head, Punisher, Gauntlet and TMNT will probably be popular. How about other suggestions? I'd like to have a list of 20 or 30 games handy that people can try out.

I have the KLOV top 100 games handy as well but they're mostly the classics, not really head to head.

NBA Jam/Hangtime would be cool - The 2 people could play against each other, or on the same team (Depending on how you have it setup).

I have a few hockey nuts coming to the party... I was thinking Open Ice Challenge.... only problem is that my processor is a little weak, it's only a 733 with 640 megs of ram. I don't think it can pull off NBA Jam or Open Ice Challenge....  :-[

Joust.

For some reason I never get the "no player conflict" points when I play two player.   ;D

Like Oscar said: Joust.

And like you said: Track & Field.  Nothing brings back arcade memories like being able to hammer away at the buttons like a crazed monkey in T & F.

Two games: The Simpsons and Sunset Riders. If your cab supports 4 players, will be even better.

Another puzzle game, Karian X!  My wife has been playing this and finally got me into it.  A puzzle game with characters, and a street-fighter type theme...

Also, Space Invaders II (Midway cocktail version) is fun!  Like normal Space Invaders, but better (head to head play, possibility of shooting the other player, possibility of teamwork by blasting the other player's enemies!)  Also, it's much faster paced than the original.  Just make sure to reverse the left and right directions for player two, unless you're playing on a cocktail table...

Free resource for building your own rotating control panels!

My other job...

My friends and I always get a kick out of playing Pigskin 621 A.D.  We always have to pause the game and shake our wrists to get the blood flowing to our hands again.  That game is pretty fast paced!   ;D

I've got a few less known yet really great games. These are the games that go well at our frat house. Go Phi Sig MAME...

League Bowling-
It can have up to 4 players, but uses only 2 sets of controls. I went through the list trying to find a good bowling game and this is the best one I came up with. It's a GREAT Neo Geo game... BEER FRAME!!!

Super Puzzle Fighter 2-
Kicks the crap out of sissy puzzle games like Puzzle Bobble. (And you get to kick the crap out of each other when you score!) You build gems into bigger gems and them blow them up to unleash attacks on your opponent. Best vs puzzle game EVER!

Super Gem Fighters Mini Mix-
A Capcom crossover fighting game that only uses 3 buttons. Punch, kick, and Super. It's loads of fun and not your typical Capcom fighting game. Plus all your favorite characters look like little kids and they all get new moves. Even the resident Ryu expert will be set back to "beginner" when you play this one. It's different...

Sunset Riders-
Old-school side-scrolling western-themed shoot-em-to-pieces game. Enough said... (Kicks the crap out of TMNT.)

Gun Bird-
At least I think that's the name of the game. People started with 1942, then up to Raiden, and now to this one. Choosing different characters changes the gameplay and interactions as well as the outcome of the game. Every game is like playing it for the first time.

P.S. I was running a P3 866MHz with 128MB RAM and it played NBA Jam like a dream. And that's despite running with video processor overhead to stabilize the image on an arcade monitor through Windows. (In other words, NBA Jam should work.)

Right on! MORE good ones!

I just thought of League Bowling as well when I saw the other bowling games. I'm including that one too.

A few others i thought of:

Metal Slug series
Wild West C.O.W - Boys of Moo Mesa
Turf Masters
Hyper Sports
Tetris
Marvel Super Heroes
X-Men Children of the Atom
X-Men vs Street Fighter
Street Fighter II
Mortal Kombat

This list is getting REALLY good! I can't wait until Saturday! Gotta buy the beer and mix up a giant batch of chilli yet!!! Woo hoo!

I will put in a plug for one of my old favorites: Warrior.

Two player, vector, overhead view fighter.  Each player is a knight with a two handed sword.  No special move combinations  to remember.  Move joystick to move knight, hold fire button and move joystick to swing sword. Simple but lots of fun.  There is some strategy and one trick you can pull on the other guy.

Well one game I HIGHLY suggest if you ever get Gens (genesis emulator) is PowerBall, now that's a damn classic, along with General Chaos.
In terms of Mame games, I'd have to say Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix is a good one, Vampire Savior or Vampire Savior II are very fun, Marvel vs Street Fighter is probably the most balanced Vs game, a VERY VERY good shooter that seems to go unheard of in a lot of game lists is Guwange, which I believe is one of Cave's shooters, and is VERY good, I highly suggest trying that out.  Remember mame isn't the only emulator out there for party gamers.
If you're worried about your CPu hindering your performance or more graphically intense fighting games like Marvel vs Capcom, the newest version of Nebula runs absolutely smooth as hell on my 333mhz celeron, you can find a link from http://cps2shock.retrogames.com   It also supports Neo Geo games, and at a 700mhz processor they should all work perfectly, although I'd use NeoRageX just cause that's the smoothest Neo Geo emulator out there.
If you get Snes9X or ZSnes, I suggest getting Megaman Soccer, very fun.  If you're worried about your CPU speed in Mame, NBA Jam TE for Snes runs full speed on my 333mhz for the SNES, so that's a good alternative.
-Good Luck, if I find any other games I think you should try out, I'll definitely list em

Very good.  Going with other emultors, get a NES emulator and a little known, not so popular game Klash Ball.  Kinda crony, but with 2 people it is fun.

No nude games listed?  A few good qix type games just for a few kicks... depends on the crowd.

Micheal Jackson game.  Why?  Most people cant believe that the game actually exists!  Give them the experience :)

coop games.
Sonson is fun.

I like random fighting games that nobody has ever heard of.  I can't play SF games with most people since I... well... kick thier asses and it's not fun... but one where nobody knows any moves is fun.

Don't forget non-mame games.  All the zinc games are fun!  If you have windows show them some graphics.  Modeler has Spiderman (good right now).

Bikini Karate looks good.  I will give a report asap.

I've found a few more myself. I've always found driving games bring out the competitiveness in people. I found a few Neo-Geo games that look good. (Neo-Geo because they use joysticks. Perfect for my cabinet)

Neo Drift Out
Riding Hero
Over Top (havent played this one, so not sure if it sucks yet hehe)

More puzzle games:
Magical Drop
Magical Drop II

I have a real nice list now, everyone should have alot of fun. Thanks guys.... Of course, more is ALWAYS better!  hehe ;)

edit: Opps! Darn, all the driving games are one player! Blah! Ok, see! You guys DO know best, I need your help! hehe

If you want the best 2-d racing game in my opinion in Mame, I'd go with  The Great 1000 Miles Rally (Evolution Model).  Damn I played the hell out of that game, it's SOOOOOOOO fun.
A good fighting game for the old-school fans that runs in Kawaks and Nebula is Super Street Fighter 2 X, it has all the old school qualities and has a super bar to make things interesting.  Best version out there.

Well, I had my MAME party last night. It was a HUGE success. Thanks for all the game suggestions guys, my guests really enjoyed them.
2 of the guys were on the machine most of the night, all I could hear was massive pounding of buttons (music to a mame builders ears IMHO  ;D) By the end of the night i had one of the girls and her boyfriend playing Puzzle Bobble on it. They played 21 games in a row on it! hehe She kept saying "Ok, just one more game!" It was 2 am before they finally stopped playing!

Thanks for helping make a really fun party guys.
If you build a frankenpanel, chances are I don't care for you as a person.
