Archon type game...
« on: January 27, 2005, 11:17:53 am »
A friend of mine played Archon a bunch back in the day (that battle chess type game), and asked me if there was anything like that on arcades.  I didn't play the game much, so I've never looked for it before, does anyone kn0w off the top of their head if there is an Archon type game for the arcades?

never seen it and highly doubt that there is one.
Then only table-Top style games in arcade are like Othello, Mahong games...Maybe one of those Megatouch Table Top Video Games, which is basically consist of PC hardware (I think it was a 386 based system) w/special software made for it to accept coins etc...
So let say, you can take a PC game (Battle Chess) modiy the game to accept coins and have it Display "Insert Coin" when game is over etc...

Hmmm... this was never in the arcade (obviously), but there's a game out for the Xbox called "Wrath Unleashed" which draws its roots from Archon. I've enjoyed playing it quite a bit, and I think it can be bought pretty cheaply these days.

If your friend owns an Xbox, he ought to check it out.

As far as TRUE arcade games? I can't think of a single one.

The only way to play Archon or Archon II is to use an emulator for which ever machine ( C64, Amiga, etc. )you want to run it on.
Real Life.  Still a poor substitute for video games!

Wow.  Archon.  Just hearing the name makes me want to go dig through the attic for the old 64.  There were alot of games on there that I've never seen anywhere else.  How about Raid On Bungeling Bay.  There were alot, can't remember the names though.  Alot of arcade ports too.  But the system died even faster than it came about.

There is actually an arcade version of Bungeling Bay, but it's not very good.

Huh?!  C64 is in the Guinness book of records as the best selling computer. Over 30 million of them. It was released in 1981 and the very last one manufactured was in 1994. We're so used to upgrading our PCs every 1.5 years. This little 1 mhz system lasted 13 years!
NO MORE!!

You can play the original Archon on a commodore 64 emulator running on your MAME machine.  There are several good emulators available, and they are not hard to set up at all.  Just do a google search.

I too loved Archon, but my all time favorite C64 game is still Jumpman - we used to stay up all night in college playing.

Cheers!
