mame artwork files?
« on: December 18, 2004, 10:19:35 pm »
Is anyone out there using the mame artwork files in their MAME build on an arcade monitor?

I never really paid attention to them until I discovered all the DAT files on the CLRMamePro site.

I know the samples are needed but I always just assumed that the artwork files were bezels or something.  It seems that they more than that.

I'm just trying to figure out if I should go download them or not.

The art files are zipped up and include differant componants such as bezels and backdrops.  Backdrop artwork is nice for asteroids and warlords etc. I personaly dont use the bezels, however, I would if I used a higher resolution.

some games are really hard or impossible to play without the artwork.
Try and play Frogs for example.
Alot of 70's game such as Botohill really need those artwork.

Does mame automatically use any artwork placed in the artwork directory?

I assume that artwork that is a background or overlay will work fine on an arcade monitor but I think bezels would cause a problem.  Is there any way to easily know what stuff is necessary (and will work on an arcade monitor) and what is just fluff (bezels)?

just leave artwork on and bezel off in your INI file.
