is a universal coin mech useless

I got a free cab a while back, and it came with a coin door without the coin mechanisms. I haven't really messed with trying to get the coin door working at all untill this weekend. Well I looked it over and underneath where the coin mechs would go there was a switch that was activated when a coin was dropped through the slot. Now do all coin doors have this switch or are there some that have the switch in the coin mech?

Anyways I decided to rig up something that my coins could go through to reach it from the top to the switch. two pieces of paper and some duct tape later my coin door worked with any type of coin that would fit through the opening. I plan on making a metal channel or something better than paper and duct tape, but I wanted to know if this method would work.

There is no advantage to buying a universal coin mech, unless you are trying to prevent certain types of slugs, metal objects, or other stuff from registering credits. If your main purpose is to drop something (anything) into the slot and get credits, you have solved the problem Coin mechs only prevent slugs, and other junk from getting credits. But yours should work fine now with anything, as long as in hits the switch at the bottom.
