I've got mine set up up = up right, down = down left, left = up left, right = right down.

I'm using T-stick set in 8 way mode and it plays mint. (It doesn't seem to work well for congo bongo or zaxxon though)

I set it up with my 4-way Stick.
Up = UP not Left not Right
Down= Down not Left not Right
Right = Right not Up not Down
Left= Left not Up not Down

Sinec my 4-way is a true 4-way (Diamond shape joystick), feels/looks like its working except for the feel of course that I can't go diagonal. But all in all, Q-bert is working great. Now I have to try Congo Bongo. As far the Zaxxon, I might set that one up with the 8-way stick.

Q*bert uses diagonals.  To help out, oscarcontrols has a q*restrictor plate.
